How is Apple's announcment supposed to calm me?

So Apple says the iPhone shows too many Bars and that is why the "death grip" makes it lose all the bars.
Now I am asking myself: How is this supposed to calm those folks who get the message "No Signal" when the phone is held in the left hand?
According to Apple, if you get that message you are in an area with bad coverage, but my cheap-ass Nokia never tells me I have no signal.

So everyone who can make their iPhone lose signal with the death grip: Apple's explanation says this is correct and to me it looks like the update won't make it any better.

Bottom line: If I hold my Phone in the left hand I will not be able to make calls in areas with coverage sufficient for most other cellphones...

"To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design."

The signal drop is a hardware issue. The sofware issue is the indication of how much signal is dropping. Apple are fixing the indicator so that when it drops it'll be one or two bars not four or five.

In other words, Apple is masking the problem by further deceiving the consumer.

Apple has officially turned into lying and conniving pieces of *****. Luckily news outlets are onto their lying and are reporting that Apple's claimed fix is not really a fix. The phone was poorly designed from an antenna standpoint. I implore people to continue posting videos and on websites to keep this issue at the forefront. Apple is refusing to admit what is really wrong and no company should be allowed to get away with it.

Relax Hitler, turn that frown upside down. :)

Wow.
Lets ignore Apples letter admitting the problem.
Lets ignore Anandtech's excellent review, especially its final words.
Lets make up our own scenario with no evidence to justify keeping our defective phone.

Go ahead, keep your defective phone that Apple admits and won't fix.
Ignore other competitive phones which are as good or better because they're not Apple products. Because Apple always makes the BEST products which NEVER have MAJOR defects and because they ALWAYS resolve customer issues.

Or maybe... just maybe... ditch the defective phone while you still can and buy a real phone that does as much without the fundamental problem.

Just a thought

If the phone doesn't work for you, return it. I have purchased phones from other manufacturers that haven't provided adequate service, and I've returned them. I didn't feel I had to turn it into a social movement against the manufacturer. The phone just was not right for me personally.

Many people are finding the iPhone just works for them, and others are finding the great strengths justify the simple adjustments, workarounds, or compromises.

Apple made some design choices, with resulting strengths and weaknesses. These choices are not going to work for everyone. Different phones work for different people in different areas with different needs. The reality is that in 2010, cell phone service is not a fully mature technology, in spite of its wide deployment-- cell phones have so much utility that people have adopted them in spite of this. Using a carrier with marginal service in your area exposes the immaturity of the technology, as do manufacturers such as Apple who push new packaging concepts in the interest of product miniaturization.

I bought a car recently, and spent a lot of money on it.

When I started to drive it regularly, I heard a "popping" noise every now and then coming from the dashboard. When I contacted the dealer, turns out there was an "known" issue with something expanding inside the dash, which would then make a popping noise when pressure was released. Obviously I was upset, so I brought it back, they fixed the issue as best they could, however still to this day every now and then, certain parts of the dash will "creak" or slightly pop when I touch them. It's a lot better, but not completely alleviated.

To avoid this problem, I now simply try not to touch those area's of the dash. Is it ideal? No, but I like the car a lot overall so I decided to keep it. Bringing cars back is very hard to do too, so even if I didn't like it, I'd most likely be screwed into keeping it.

The point? With this iPhone antenna issue you CAN bring the phone back, or you can adjust how you use it if you like the phone a lot. Simple, and non stressful in the grand scheme of things.

Ok - now imagine this. The company said that you can take the fix or return for a full refund. You then take it back and they want to charge you 10 percent to return the car. Happy?

Some people have posted that exact scenario. I think it's GREAT that Apple is accepting returns. I just don't think that they should be tipped 10 percent for doing so.

Maybe people would feel better If the government made apple put money into an escrow account for mental anguish

So I Had Dropped Call After Dropped Call...

Because the hight/amount of the signal bars were incorrect! My iPhone 3G never gave me any dropped calls, looks like I saved myself £499 by returning my iPhone4 to the Apple retail store last Wednesday. Get a grip S.J' oops, but not on your iPhone4:(

From the press release...

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

Plain and simple. No restocking fee. There is a reason Apple has the best customer service. If you're not happy with the answers given at the Apple store, call AppleCare at home and they will take care of you.

You are by far the biggest cry baby I have ever seen on these forums. You really need to man up and stop whining. Uneducated? You have no idea who you are talking to. You need a lesson in logic and reason. Go sell your computer and delete your macrumors account. You shouldn't even be online. Go buy a box of tissues and a dress.

dont care who you /think/ you are, but this response is a perfect example of my original comment. uneducated name calling. grow up. i need a lesson in logic and reason? how bout every response ive come up with has been a legitimate argument, and your response to everyone has been, "need a tissue little baby?". you're probably a prepubescent spoiled child. not sure what selling my computer has to do with anything, but maybe you should go back to kindergarten, where they teach children manners and not to name call. you're a joke, and everyone on this forum knows it. ;) good day sir

What the hell is wrong with you people? You are agreeing with the idea that people should hold their phones different. Get a freaken clue!

You're not entitled to hold a product in whatever way you want. Trying holding a gun by the barrel and then complain when you can't operate it.

Yes but with clever programing you can visually remove the issue the. It will all lie back on AT&T for already having mad droped calls. Apple is getting thousands of emails a day in regards to this issue they need to give us something. So they make it seem as if it was something simple, like I said if it's not hardware then why with a case one does it not drop signal? Because your fingers Cary electrical signals within them and it's causing the antennas to cross frequencies. I dorm believe apple. They lie all day. Jobs was quoted as saying it isn't even an issue and he has no idea of why customers are talkin about.....

I bought a bumper with my iPhone 4. Didn't solve the issue. Yes, the rate at which the bars dropped was slower than if I didn't have a case on. I returned the bumper.

If it were a hardware issue, be it any organisation - especially Apple, wouldn't lie for the sakes of keeping customers happy in the short term.
