Nothing says I don't like your stuff as much as 'give me my money back, your product stinks'.

Wrong and you obviously have never worked in product marketing. An unhappy current customer counts much more than a lost one. This I know first hand as I run a global marketing program.

But he DID say "No matter what way I hold my phone I don't get the drop of bars I did before."

Which would be the case if he got switched to a signal with -65 dBm or better of signal strength, since -65 dBm, minus up to 24 dB of antenna attenuation, would still give him at least -89 dBm, which would be indicated on the i4 as 5 bars currently.

So, Apple is going to pass the blame on to AT&T ?

So, iPhone 4 users will be complaining about AT&T, when in fact the real problem is that they traded in their 3GS iPhones for an iPhone 4 with a faulty antenna design?

Yes, everything is going according to plan. Soon the public will demand a Verizon iPhone.

so who's gonna do post # 20 Million?

Me, me, me. Actually I heard that Macrumors is actually doing a 20 million iPhone antenna complaining post avatar giveaway.

Crazy

Go ahead, return your I/4 no sweat off my n*ts I learned w/my 3GS not to hold it by the bottom it lost signal the same as the new one. Hell blame the Govt sissys that insist the antenna can't be on top like they used to remember the Star-tac? All phones used to have top antenna! Till big brother stuck his big unwanted nose in and said it gives u brain cancer, put the antenna on the bottom. Stop whining it makes you sound like a nextel user.

Crazy

OMG!!! My eyes!!! Trinity sheeez you better have a big brain dude.
Stop buyin electronics, run, take all your money and buy a Harley Davidson you need to butch up! I'm headed to the liquor store.

This is apples way of getting out of a big pile of mess. All that will happen now is that people will still have calls dropping, but you pretty much can't complain to apple now as they will look at it and say "well, your signal strength is low so thats why its dropping out". Doesn't matter if you had signals in the same place with a 3GS model, at that point its your word against theirs. All this statement is doing is giving them an upper hand in the argument.

Nothing has changed, its still a hardware issue.

Couldn't have said it better myself. People would be a complete fool if they download this "Software Update"

And which camp do you belong in? Let me guess, the latter group? Or are you referring to the Apple CEO in a less then flattering way?

I belong to a group that buys stuff to do stuff. I only get emotionally involved when it comes to football, friends, family or love :D

You still haven't got an iPhone or an iPad, have you?

I've had an iPhone 3G since August 2008.

iPad on the way next month. iPhone 4 upgrade will be this month as soon as Rogers gets it.

I might even get a new Mac Mini to replace my WD HDTV Mediaplayer, although it's a great little price of hardware, I must say. I'll be interested to see what Apple does with AppleTV.

I'm not about to read all the comments but if anyone has already made a note of this, then sorry.

"We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G."

If it's a software problem then why older iPhones don't have any major signal loss or drop calls when you hold it similarly to the iPhone4. Therefore it must be a design/hardware problem.

Funny.. my Apple bumper already solved my software problem... go figure. Apple out of the blue decides to make a bumper for their phone.... just like that... I'll bet they knew of these issues early on, but Steve's "aesthetics" won out over functionality. It's a damn nice-looking phone, just don't try to make any phone calls with it.

My thoughts as well. How can making your phone *see* less bars help your dropped calls? So for the most of us, we'll be talking with a "Searching..." message rather than bars? I can see it now, two AT&T customers talking to each other.

Customer A: Hey Joe, nice day. How many bars you getting, I have 4?
Customer B: Search me. <bad joke laughs begin>

The software update will probably make it so the iPhone can tell when you are holding it incorrectly and "adjust" the bars.

The the new calculation will make the bars *less* incorrectly displayed than before, or allow them cover so they can blame AT&T for no service. Here's Apple's fix.

Complaint: When I hold my phone the normal way or touch the stainless edge, my bars drop from 5 to 1, then the call drops.
Solution: We (Apple) are making it so that you don't ever get 5 bars again, thus you probably won't have a signal to first connect you to a call, thus making it harder for you to drop your calls. See, we fixed it.

It is quite simple, apple is becoming arrogant. They won't admit there is a problem. They have plenty of money to do a recall or give everyone a bumper case.
