I'm so pleased to see that this thread has finally reached the proper conclusion. The iPhone 4 is by far and away the best mobile experience available. The retina display, the external antenna with the best reception ever, iOS4 with multitasking done right, and the elegant presentation.

It takes an American company to provide the innovation to create such a master piece. Here we are celebrating our independence day and America is still leading the world.

Enjoy the 4th of July knowing that companies like Apple lead by Steve Jobs follow in the footsteps of great American inventors like Franklin and Edison.

There is no issue with the reception!

This is just a software issue infidels!

LOL!!!!! Baghdad Bob!!! Haven't seen this guy in years. I can still remember when the US occupied the air strip as he was saying the Iraq army buried the devils under the desert sand, or some ***** like that. You could almost see billowing smoke behind him, but all was well in this guys mind. All of Saddam's palaces were bombed, but this guy was standing his ground.

Does remind me of Steve right about now. There is a 1,000,000 pound gorilla in the room but nobody seems to notice and Steve is trying to talk his way out of people noticing.

Yes, it takes an American company.... which builds all it's stuff in China to maximize profits. Just imagine how much the iPhone costs if they manufactured it in the USA? Can you say $999.99????

Oh - So I guess the people that have posted on MR and other places are lying. That said, I can't show you one that has the problem as mine does not. My I4 is rock solid. I have not dropped one call.

Lame. Everyone who is going on about how perfect your iPhone4 is, get over yourself. Either all of the phones have a problem or they don't. All 1.6 million iPhone4's were made the exact same way. Yours is not unique. There is nothing special about yours. You do not have some rare, special limited edition which was blessed by Steve Jobs himself. You may not have dropped any calls and you may be sporting a full 5 bars (which as it turns out is actually 3) everywhere you go 24/7 but your phone still suffers from the same design flaw as everyone elses.

The most ignorant post of the thread goes to....

Explain the yellowing issue on last years iMacs then. After all, they're ALL made exactly the same way:rolleyes:

I like your post, and I agree that America has a lot more innovation to offer the world, but let's not forget that Apple products are made in China and with the rush to meet demand and stay ahead of the competition Apple's quality control is slipping.

I've been buying Apple products for over 10 years and I've noticed some significant changes in the materials they're using and the time they're putting into testing. Their industrial design in bar none, but Apple is not infallible. I like the company most of the time, and I love their products. Here's hoping they can overcome the demands of their customers and leapfrog their competitors once again.

I doubt whether that would be sustainable. I suspect they just need to stall enough until the iPhone4.01 in production.

Sad thing is, that with all this bad Karma resonating, Apple and any daring company that wants to break molds, might risk retreating to more "conservative" designs just to keep happy the donkeys that don't want/listen how to adapt to a somewhat sandbox product with the best technology available at this moment.

And not because they can't, but because they don't want. Fortunately SJ's balls are made of steel, so we don't risk any repercussions because of this ...

Apple has GOT to do something about this. The long-time iCustomers will likely continue to buy the i4, forgiving the boneheaded design flaw, but unless the underlying problems are actually fixed, this whole thing may be Apple jumping the shark.

Apple says they are doing something about it. They published a letter stating they retested and found the issue to be software. You will have a software fix available within a few weeks.

If that is not satisfactory or you choose not to trust Apple for a genuine solution then you have a choice to make. You have 30 days fr om date of purchase to return the phone for a full refund.

...but your phone still suffers from the same design flaw as everyone elses.

Yup. Absolutely correct. Every cell phone from every manufacturer will drop calls if held in the worst possible manner where there is a weak enough RF signal. Therefore all cell phones are flawed. Apple is just getting a huge amount of free PR on their particular flaw.

Most customers will never notice because they won't use their cell phones that way.

Anyone betting on the i4 return percentage? Anyone think it will be 2% of total unit sales above the return rate for the 3GS?

Meh. Their "break the mold" approach is hit and miss, and customers are used as guinea pigs for designs that have never been tested outside Apple's secret vault. Wow, a fanless computer! Oh wait... it cracked. Wow, a circular mouse! Oh wait... carpal tunnel galore. Wow, a titanium laptop! Oh wait, the hinges snapped off. Wow, a laptop that fits in a manila envelope! Oh wait... is it supposed to burn a hole through my pants? Wow, a phone with the antenna integrated into the external metal band! Oh wait... it drops calls when you touch it.

I wonder if it's possible in the software to change around the orientation of the antennas. Like this band is for wifi, this one is for phone, and maybe switch them around. If that would even help who knows.

Wow are we talking for this useless Apple?
Oh wait, the companie's grown 10x since I last checked... How come ?
They make so terrible, terrible stuff. Who buys em??
A conspiracy? Must be one coming from uncle Sam...
Oh wait... they got me.... aaarggg:rolleyes:

No I think the only thing that list tells us, is that you shouldn't worry too much about Apple being forced into more conservative designs .. they had their share of "misses", but man they had some homeruns too.
And "miss" is still a relative term here .. I guess they still came out on the plus side even for most of the "misses".

Gawd, I hope your not a native English speaker because your English hurts my brain. What are you dribbling on about???
Anyway, enough about your need to study English a bit more.

the SIMPLE FACT is a user should not have to worry how they hold a HAND-HELD DEVICE.

Get it? HAND-HELD. Anybody not getting this point is seriously on the verge of being mentally handicapped.

wow .. that independence day sure tickles some patriotic nerves. Hate to break it to you though, but Apple is a globally operating company that produces most of it things in China and has employees from all over the world, Johnathan Ive, for example is British ..

But hey .. enjoy the long weekend.

Whatever suits you pal.
Unfortunately this phone won't ever fit you, because you can't find a way to hold it without touching its antenna.
Obviously for such a complication there are numerous competitors that have long solve this and you should switch to them asap. See? everyone's happy.

iPhone 3GS Death Grip

I live in downtown Oslo so I rarely see less than 5 bars of signal strength but I decided to see how hard it is to make the phone lose bars. Just like messing with a WiFi PCCard adapter by wrapping your hand around the antenna, I tightly cupped my two hands around the bottom and managed to lose 2 bars of signal strength in about 20 seconds. I must say not a comfortable position.

I think this whole debacle is really about perception. All cellular phones suffer from this problem but for the first time people became aware of this during the launch of Apple's iPhone and when the phone is over-reporting the signal strength in a particular area people get upset that putting your hands over the bottom would cause a dramatic fall in bars.

The conclusion for me is that there are multiple problems here. There are clearly over-reported signal bars for a given location, and while the antenna design and positioning is brilliant it might need some refinement when coming to material or non-conductive coatings, and there is a media coverage problem. For some via software update, for others with the purchase of a case if they live in a marginal signal-strength area, and maybe later a manufacturing change. Ultimately, this problem will go away when the media frenzy dies down and people just use their phone day-to-day.

This seems to be just like the dropped calls issue. People lack any sort of perspective since they haven't been on any phone network other than AT&T and haven't used any other phone other than an iPhone since 2007. When I lived in San Francisco before iPhone we had a high percentage of dropped calls. In fact I can identify the spot on the 101 where I was guaranteed a dropped call on the way back to the City. Of course the SF Bay Area is a tough place, with hilly geography, and a NIMBY attitude toward those dangerous RF emitting cell towers. At the WWDC this year I actually found my iPhone worked flawlessly in San Francisco with zero dropped calls, so I was impressed by how things improved.

I think this will end up being a great example of how the story hungry media like the AT&T network issues, with the help of blogging, can turn an edge case issue into an epic failing.

All products are flawed

All products are flawed. So what's your point? It certainly isn't a simple binary experience. If a product has a specific flaw but you never experience it, is it flawed?

Epic failing?

1.7 million units shipped - epic failing? Not! Great phone, no problems at all - simply love it!
