Gosh, oddly that's what we call people who whine about defective products which, if they had actually bought one, they could just return for a refund. Thus proving they are either trolling or are obsessive whiners. (and we're back on topic, yeah!)

There are two ways of viewing these people:

1) Perfectionists that are disappointed Apple fans where they expected more
or better and got less.

or

2) People who just love to whine.

Some of the videos which were posted on Youtube actually showed some pretty good examples of what they were talking about.

I always remember Hong-Kong where reception is amazing. I can be in the freakin tube going under water from Kowloon to Central Hong-Kong and have perfect reception where in the US I have to walk around my house to find a perfect area to stand in just to make a call.

Nice post, I was wondering the same thing, except I am not sure that you end up with the eight antenna lengths easily. I suspect that the issue came up too late in development to make this modification, and Apple will adjust this design in the next cycle, and claim it is based on Customer input that they have carefully evaluated and incorporated into the design, and thank everyone for helping improve a product we all love, creating an inclusive nature to the approach and bringing everyone who has experienced this issue "inside" the solution. Would be a reasonable marketing move, and something I would expect from Apple.

Sad thing is, that with all this bad Karma resonating, Apple and any daring company that wants to break molds, might risk retreating to more "conservative" designs just to keep happy the donkeys that don't want/listen how to adapt to a somewhat sandbox product with the best technology available at this moment.

Happy thing is, they might think twice about releasing a product that does not work properly when it is held properly.

Feedback

Being from the UK myself I see that as a bad thing.

Experience has shown me that people in the UK time and time again, just bend over and take whatever crap that's thrown at them, have a moan and do nothing about it.

People in the USA stand up for themselves and get treated with more respect as citizens because of it.

Raise the price of Gas in the USA to the same as it is in the UK.

It's currently $8.36 for one gallon of gas in the UK.

There would be riots on the streets if they tried that in the US, but like normal, UK people just grumble, moan and pay up.

All respect to the Americans for standing up for themselves I say.

Don't disagree with what you're saying however a personal exchange between people usually reveals more of the truth about a matter personally felt e.g. if the weather is terrible we'll talk about it, if we had a poor experience somewhere we are more likely to disclose that experience initially to a close friend or family member. So in this instance my reference to discussing the issues around the antenna that are being cited are as a result of personal exchanges I've had with people know.

However you're right we're constantly creamed in some way shape or form and wish that we would stand up for ourselves. For instance the abysmal football performance at the World Cup, should we not consider boycotting some games as a result of national pride. Voting with your wallet would show that you no longer accepted sub par performances from our nationals teams and even the FA would take notice.

Thanks.

This issue is going to die down RAPIDLY. This is mainly an issue on techie websites like this and and I would garner that more than half the whiners are people who dont even own an iPhone. The reason it made it to the mainstream media is because their Tech media journalists frequent these sites so their impression is that the problem is more widespread than it is, so they feel they have an "story" they have to report....nothing sells like controversy and negativity right?

FACT is it is NOT widespread, and Apple knows this. It definitely isn't being seen in Europe as it is here. Apple threw a bone to the whiners, and while it definitely wont shut them up, it is enough to move this thing along to its natural conclusion as it has with every other hysterical critical flaw found in every other iPhone.

Meh

Oh wait, the companie's grown 10x since I last checked... How come ?
They make so terrible, terrible stuff. Who buys em??

Past growth does not indicate anything one way or the other about the i4 reception problem.

All cellular phones suffer from this problem

No cell phone will drop all signal because it is held in the manner it was designed to be held in.

No cell phone except the iPhone, that is.

Didn't a star-trek race have a death grip or something?

Vulcan nerve pinch. four fingers opposing the thumb.

It is the manner in which the i4 needs to be held to avoid dropping calls.

1.7 million units shipped - epic failing? Not!

Not yet. Wait for the product recall.

I also don't see where are all those hundreds of thousands angry iPhone 4 owners with flawed phones. If this was true it would be catastrophe of biblical proportions, it isn't.

:D Dream on.

Placebo, pure and simple. Grow up, and move on.

Oh, did I mention hysterical, disproportionate negativity, based on the fact that people stupidly expect Apple to create *perfect* products, fresh out of the box, every time?. Humans are stupid; very, VERY stupid. This demonstrates that fact well.

Talk about mass hysteria. Wow

Those bars are like voodoo. I have 3 iPhone 4s. None of them exhibit this behavior in a repeatable way. In fact when I pick up the phone there is a even chance or better that the bars will actually go up when I short the antennae.

I have had 0 dropped calls, I have been out on a run with Nike+ and Runkeeper
working, listening to music, checking emails and talking in fringe areas and the
phone just keeps on ticking.

That's my experience.
The most incredible piece of consumer tech ever released.

I agree. In regards to the marrying of form and function this is the high water mark to date for personal communication/portable media devices.

MASS HYSTERIA

Try opening your eyes, and looking at this from a balanced standpoint, folks. People and their little "problems". Bourgeois issues - try living on a landfill site in Africa, where our tech waste gets dumped, and having to sort through it while toxic fumes come from burning plastic, as you look for scraps of precious metal to sell SIMPLY TO KEEP YOU ALIVE, for the sum of about 30 pence per day.

And you think this is important?

This is one of the reasons I avoid forums so much nowadays - day wasting crap like this.

Goodbye.

But it does work when held properly.

People still defending Apple's claim that we the customers are "holding it wrong"....

I've been gripping my phones the same since the day I could wield one without dropping it.

The best products in the world can be improved upon. And to all of the Apple defenders and believers, we all just paid 200.00 for one.

This is my last word on this issue. Apple's response only changes the explanation, or reason why people are having issues. It doesn't change the issue. It's like saying people are dying because bears are attacking them in their backyards, then changing the real explanation to mountain lions rather than bears. People are still dying.

So all these people who are having issues with 5 bars, will still be having the same issues with 2 bars, only now they'll actually get to see how poor AT&T service with actual bars, rather than "pie in the sky" Apple bars. If I was a conspiracy buff, I'd say Apple all along kept the bars erroneously high just so it could prop up the poor AT&T cell network.

I'm done on this. Bumpers are good. Get some.

Maybe Apple exaggerated the bars because they wanted to hide the poor antenna reception with their iPhones? The current formula has been there for years.....I doubt it was a "mistake".

Tell that to JP Morgan.
They predict the stock price will target at $390..
Because OF the i4...

Ever since they along with a couple of others predicted new highs and upgraded the stock it has been on a roll just tanking nearly everyday now. They upgrade so that they get fools out there to buy what they want to dump or sell. To get people to buy what they want to dump they issue new upgrades and as people enter thinking this is a great opportunity to buy Apple shares so cheap they continue to dump and unload and when they dump and unload we get major price decreases like what we saw when the government dumped Citi and BAC shares recently. BAC and Citi shares are worth 20%+ less now that the government dumped and if they continue to dump we will see another 20% drop as well.

Stock was roughly at $270 when they issued the new target price of over $330 and we pulled back $20+ instead of gaining $50 so expect another $20-30 drop before earnings and a rally during the last week of options expirations.

That's not "fixed", it shifts 3G traffic towards the upper half of the phone which would **** up the SAR rating (why do you think everyone puts the antenna at the bottom...?) The FCC would reject it.

Actually i was thinking about the sar a few days ago. Since contacting either strip on the sides and the bottom one effectively changes the signal path to beside the ear.
I wonder what the rating would be then

Generally speaking reception on GSM networks in Asia an Europe is much better than what is available in the US. They have a smaller area to cover and have more cell towers around the city. In the US we have too many cry babies that complain about having a cell tower in their neighborhood so due to lawsuits, fines, regulations, complaints and large are of space we have less cell towers which is why we have poor reception.
We have just as many crybabies in Sweden yet our 3G coverage is close to 100%. I think the carriers are simply using those crybabies as an excuse to avoid investments.

In Sweden the government put a blowtorch on the carriers' a$$es right from the get-go. The PTS (the government board for mail and telecommunications) said "OK, here are your 3G licenses. If you can't show 85% coverage by 2003, they'll be revoked. Are we clear?" Lo and behold, no matter how many tin foil hats resisted the 3G rollout somehow the carriers somehow managed to fulfill their obligations anyway. Not by 2003 as promised, but by 2005. We have the best 3G coverage in Europe (and possibly the world, unless Japan and South Korea beat us). Why? Government pressure on the carriers, nothing else. They do as little as possible. In the US, 'as little as possible' means barely lifting a finger because the carriers have nothing to fear from the government... just take a few congressmen out to dinner and you can stall for another 5 years. In Sweden, 'as little as possible' meant 85% coverage by 2003 or kiss your 3G license goodbye.

Really? Is that your expert opinion on maybe the best stock in the market right now?
The stock did fell some, but then so did the whole of Nasdaq.. but for some other reasons, not because Apple did something wrong.
At 18 of June Nasdaq was at 2310, now being some 2090ish. Nice analysis you gave us there.
