Are they trying to take every last bit of whimsy and color out of the Apple experience? I don't get it. Apple just takes itself way too seriously now.

Man, this is a _REVOLUTION_! A gray background sticker instead of yellow post-it! Incredible! Look at those rounded edges! What a nice selection of fonts!

I don't agree with this view. There's colour and whimsy everywhere in Apple design but, increasingly, the colour and the whimsy comes from the apps and the content. The page or device on which it's displayed is the frame and this has been pared down to be minimal and colourless over the years so that the content takes centre stage and becomes the focus.

Look at the current Apple homepage with the new iPad. The framing is understated and minimal but there's a glorious, saturated pink flower on it to show off the display of the new product.

That pink flower is not whimsical, it's designed to make the screen look vibrant. The Mac startup face was whimsical. The old 80s system icons were whimsical. The candy iMac and swivel iMacs were whimsical. The sticky note, while perhaps not filled with whimsy, was at least informal. Simulated leather and stitching on iOS are not whimsical, it's just tacky. And Serious Shiny Techie placards are certainly not whimsical; they are digital neckties that need to be loosened.

I understand the need for color-critical work to not be marred by the OS, but I'm pretty sure Apple could program a "serious work" color mode for Photoshop, Aperture and Final Cut. Though plenty of people have gotten great work done with a bit of whimsy in their computer life.

Here's a good example of current Apple whimsy - the little bounce animation on the new iOS 5.1 camera shortcut to indicate that you can slide it up to get straight to the camera app. It's delightful and whimsical and, crucially, useful.

Whimsy is still there but it's more practical whimsy, for want of a better description.

I agree. While I generally like Apple's minimalistic design's in products, this just looks, well, minimalistic. No character, no charm, just something a 12 year old could have designed.

Aren't you sick of Apple's push towards skeuomorphic design? I'm happy to see that cheap looking comic sans sticky go, especially if it hints of software design changes to come.

So now instead of having the masses moaning about the yellow sticky note every time the Apple Store is down for iPad/iPhone pre orders, how do we proceed to moan now :(

Its basically just 'that gray box'.

Wow! The Store is online again. Could someone tell me if there is actually a change in the store? Or, is it post-April fool's day? Don't tell me that there is a graphics resolution increase... as my naked eye cannot really notice much...

Nothing new?... Actually, you got new store down design...

Hmm... wonder how many ppl got excited over that. :D

Macbook pro 15 has high res glossy aswell

I love the new look of the Apple Online Store is Down page. It looks very classy and enticing enough to encourage consumers to keep clicking refresh to see the hot new products from Cupertino. I think this is a very positive change for the online Apple Store.

As of 7:37am No sticker, no changes

No "be back soon" sticker posted as of 7:37am (Eastern)
I don't obsess over every Mac product, but the store looks the same to me...

It's not the products that make fans of apple look like over obsessive idiots. Rather it is stories like this and the comments that people make on stories like this that confirm that image.
