I'm a bit confused with the information that is displayed for my order.

I ordered 16GB Gold iPhone within 5 minutes of it going online, yet it says ships in 7-10 days. :-/

Let me know if you ever learn anything about production systems.

Okay, I'll bite. How is my perceived lack of knowledge regarding industrial production (is this what you really meant) relevant to my original post? I stated people shouldn't get angry because there has always been and always will be a component that constrains the initial supply of iPhones. Is there an implication buried in there? Yup. Believe it or not, the implication is not negative. It's smart. It generates publicity. It keeps people interested. It adds to the perceived value of the product. There are a ton of advantages to keeping that initial inventory artificially low.

btw - heading over to wikipedia to learn more about production systems. I will let you know what I find. Hopefully I gleaned the right info from your post. You really didn't make any point.;)

On the other hand, Apple appears to have been caught flat footed in terms of gold/white phone availability for launch day.

To be fair, overwhelming demand can do that to anyone. Maybe they were just too conservative. I also bet that they have yield problems considering the amount of new tech in these phones. They are far from a simple refresh.

Got Mine!!

I got to my Apple Store in downtown Charleston at 5:00 this morning and was around 30th in line. By the time they opened at 8:00 there was at least 50 people behind me. When they started handing out the cards for which phone you wanted they only got about 15 people deep and were out of gold and silver in all sizes for AT&T and Verizon. One lady traded her expensive purse for a spot in front to get the only gold phone for AT&T!

They had PLENTY of space grey in all sizes though, probably around 200 or so.

So I got 1 for me and 1 for the wife.

I ordered the silver 64gb right after 3am EST through the Apple Store (AT&T service).

According my orders status, it shows a delivery window of Sep 27 - Oct 1 by 2-3 Business Days.

Local AT&T store had 0 gold and 0 silver in any size. Manager said no resaler in the state got any gold and only a few got silver. Local Apple store got 6 of them. WTF? Did they only make 1000 of them? Mostly pissed that they let us stand in line for hours before coming out to tell us this.

My Apple Store got 1. Initially the reservation cards said there were some 16 GB Gold ones. I figured maybe there'll be more inventory of 32 GB Gold ones that I could trade it for within 14 days. So I took one of those cards.

Nope, manager comes out and says there are actually none left. I was forced to give my card back and get a Space Gray 32 GB.

I guess I can't complain, I have a 5s, still better than nothing, and I'll try to swap it in the coming days. If not, I'm happy, regardless of the color.

PS - deep down I still want a white iPhone 5s.

32GB Verizon Gold- Ordered on Apple.com

My order was completed at 12:10 PST, and I still got estimated delivery oct8-11.

Available to ship: 7- 10 business days
Delivers: Oct 8 - Oct 11 by Standard Shipping

Apple Cites 'Incredible' Demand for New iPhones Amid iPhone 5s Sellouts

Well...what would expect Apple to say?

"New iPhone a total flop! Apple exposed for putting lipstick on a pig! "

Of course not! The Apple 'spin doctors' just doing their job.

Same here. 32GB Gold VW on Apple website.

Why????????

I went to the online store at 11:55PM, it said "we are updating, will be back soon". It's been that way till 12:15AM. Then, the gold unlock version (the ONLY version I care about) already says "ship in 7-10 days". They obviously reserved all unlocked gold models of the first wave for the Apple retail store.

Enough of a point so you are going to read up. Good for you. Perhaps you will come away with a little more appreciation of the complexities of production in the supply chain, my "production system".

No company wants supply constraints; they risk losing sales. The "buzz" generates publicity, but so does branding, which Apple has in spades.

same thing people said last year and the iPhone 5 was the best selling phone ever.

This is different. Retail stores were given inventories in single figures. Carriers in the UK simply were not given stock as I understand it.

I'm not saying they were trying to fake a demand, only that there really does appear to be a shortage of 5s handsets. It will be interesting to see if the "record" stats this year include 5c and 5s sales combined. Statistics can say whatever you want them to say.

Of course I may be wrong, perhaps centralised stores were absolutely abundant with them?

You say production, I say partially planned. Let's agree to disagree and move to a different point. We can take this conversation up in approximately 12 months when the 6 has constrained supply.

/calendar marked.

Ordered the "unlocked" T-Mobile iPhone 5S to use with my StraightTalk SIM (AT&T nanosim I've used with the 5). Some folks online are saying that it has no contract but is still locked to T-Mobile.

My receipt says, specifically,
iPhone 5s 16GB Space Gray (GSM) T-Mobile, Unlocked

So if it turns out to be locked I'm going to be pissed.

to all those people who said "no one will buy this phone... it's the same as iPhone 5"...
well...
I'm sure you're wrong :)

A silly statement from critics and you. New versions of phones and hardware always do well out of the gate - I'm sure the PS4 and Xbox One will sell out. We'll have to wait and see what happens over the next few months. The 5 sold out and then didn't "do as well" as "expected" over the long run.

FYI: the iOS app had the phone for sale before I could see the Apple store web page. Those first couple of minutes are critical.

Does anyone know if it's possible to cancel your online order and snatch one at the Apple Store in person?
Yes it's possible. I had to cancel last night and resubmit my order. Cancel before it's in the ready to ship state. The cancel process is quick, but you will have to wait until it completes before trying to buy again.

I'm sure it's both. It does Apple no favors to have no stock.

SAme story every year when new iphone comes out. Supplies is constrain..that's it.

I for one will wait until a bigger screen before upgrading the 5.
