The biggest problem with the iPad is not the pricing, it's the lack of perceived value for consumers.

I'm the local alpha geek and even I am scratching my head about the iPad.

What are the "killer apps"? I would have expected Apple to launch at least one with the device but it does not appear it's going to happen.

It looks like it will be down to the app developers to come up with that "killer" feature everyone was waiting for. The iPad seems to have potential but there's not enough there yet to make me rush out and buy it.

That incredibly "cheap" price is for a mere 16GB version. It's the famous "starting at only" price. Maybe they can come out with a no-memory version for 100u$$ less!

For this kind of device a minimum acceptable is 32GB. To do the advertised; consuming media (movies, songs and books), 16GB is a joke.

I'll be there for the 16G wifi on day one.
My biggest content is my music collection, which I will NOT be loading in bulk to the iPad. If I'm using it at home, I have my home system (AppleTV, thank you) to listen to my music. If I'm mobile, I'll have my 32G iPhone, which is much more suitable for listening to music. I rarely listen to music and do the kinds of things I expect to do with the iPad simultaneously.

Movies? At most I'll have 2 or 3 loaded, maybe for a plane trip. Again, home theater is where I watch movies, not hunched over any small device.

That leaves apps, pictures and documents. I have LOT of apps on my iPhone and they take up a couple of gigs. Documents and pictures don't take up much room.

Bottom line is that 16G will let me play with it for a year or 2 before v2 or 3 comes out, and I won't feel stupid for going 'early adoptor' when I undoubtedly get one of those.

And anyone who buys one out of the gate and bitches when the prices drop should be taken out and beaten.

Too many Models

The current configuration has 6 model choices...way too many. I would like to see 2 choices: a 32 gig and a 64 gig both with 3G built in and a front facing video cam. Apple can price these choices based on user demand. Just my 2 cents!

I Should Wait...

I hear the pain here in the comments. I remember thinking I should have waited buying my first gen 5GB iPod in 2001 for $399. Now for almost double that price, I'm only going to get 64GB and a couple of other "features..."

I'm only guessing, but I'm thinking that by the time it actually IS available, there will be a few "more things" added/updated/enhanced that weren't announced earlier: Price cut, memory upgrade, front facing camera? One can dream. But, at least they're getting a good month of blog/press/survey reactions before they roll into full production.

Macbook Air I could see.

Apple TV... not so sure.

Regarding the Air I'm stunned it's still so expensive and amazed people actually pay so much more for a low-powered mac just because it's thin.

I'm sure the iPad will come down in price just like the iPhone did. No reason to be an early adopter.

.

That's precisely why you don't get it. Its designed for people who are into tasks and productivity, not the computer itself.
Its designed to disappear. That's never going to go well with the self-proclaimed priesthood.

The thing that always frustrates me about Apple product releases is that you can never buy it on the date they announce it. For the iPad, you can't even pre-order it. They loose all the excitement of a new product that makes people want to buy. Not even allowing pre-order to me is very strange. Its like they won't even be selling it, or they are going to make changes before putting it up for sale?

i was going to buy the wifi version when it came out (for some reason I really want one), but if the rumor of a potential price cut is true, it makes me want to wait (and at the same time I don't want to wait, if you know what I mean)

It's down hill from here.

Well price cuts will come but not til summer/September earliest. Early adopters are still going to pay. If the entry level were 32gb & 3G equipped at $499, they'd have an instant sale to me. At least 2

And now Apple hints that it could drop the prices even lower? I wonder if this My bet is on a surprise spec bump. Steve will pop out and say "Yeah, we know we said 16/32/64 gig at the keynote, but now that the product is here we decided to make it . Same prices. Surprise!" They've done it before.

Yet people will still find something to complain about...

I'm buying this as an ebook reader and web browser. I care less about Flash; I just installed v10.1 beta and got a kernel panic for the first time. Adobe should make their player open source so Apple can fix it themselves.

This needs to become a commodity product with a high volume and low (for Apple VERY LOW) profit margin for it to really become a success. It should be viewed as a "throw away" so that when 16 GB becomes too little memory you go out and buy another one, and pass your current one down to your kids. I would imagine that in a year they would want the entry model to be priced $100 less than it is today, possibly even less.

As for "Killer App" I would agree that there really isn't one out there today. Possibly when the publishers start releasing books and magazines there may be more perceived value for it. But I think that there needs to be more than that for it to succeed at it's current price point.

For me if it had a stylus it would be more attractive and useful, but without that input method I'm not much interested in it.

This is random, totally. I went to Apple store to search "refurb iphone" and came across this: http://store.apple.com/us/search?find=iphone+refurb&mco=MTA4MzM3MTA

Scroll down, you'll notice that iPhone 3GS are priced higher than regular retail price and very close to iPad pricing. Pretty insane, is it?

First those aren't refurbs.

Second, those are the actual prices ATT pays for the iPhone to Apple.

Third, you'll only pay those prices if you're not eligible for the subsidized price. It's been listed that way since they came out.

They should kill the 16gb model and sell the 32Gb for $499.
I mean 16gb on that? that's like putting 4gb on a iPhone ;)

I agree. The pricing structure on the memory does not hold up to scrutiny.
To go from 16gb to 32gb is a 16gb jump for a hundred dollars. I think that is uncalled for. Then we go from 32gb to 64gb an increase of 32gb and the cost is still $100. Each step up of memory is priced at $100 even though the sizes double.
It looks like the 16gb version is a bit of a loss leader with them counting on you upgrading to the 32gb version. It should be starting with 32gb.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/5.0.16831/2444; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

I think there will be. Plenty early adopters. Then there will be a few stunning apps and the people on the fence will buy one.

For me if it had a stylus it would be more attractive and useful, but without that input method I'm not much interested in it.

Capacitative styluses aren't hard to come by (you can even make your own); I don't doubt they'll work on the iPad, although admittedly being able to slot one into the device for storage would be nice.

Oh come on dude, this argument comes up every time Apple has a new product announcement, yet the product still sells immensely.

If the price for the 3G upgrade was $200, then you'd say, "If Apple just lowered the 3G upgrade to $150, more people would justify purchasing....."
:p

You're right. The same argument does come up fairly often, but the point still remains. People are fairly vocal about their disappointment with the $130 upcharge. But again, you are right. If it was $200, we'd be asking for it to be $150.

you dont cheat us!

Hello fellows,

DO YOU SEE that when all together scream and shout that this think sucks (=could be better but they didnt make it on puprose) somebody hear us and inform mr. Steve.

Well guess what Steve and you ugly-face investors that give interviews everyday:

Things didnt come better in Europe for iPad. We dont want lower price. We want a nice tablet computer. Your stocks are decreasing day by day and you dont consider why...

Put a USB port there! I want to take files from my friends you know! HELLO!
and put a 3G camera there! Jesus! we are on 2010!

Most of the polls so 85+ are not buying the current version!

FAILUREEEEEEEEEEEEE
FAILUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

And you deserve such a failure, because you think that whatever Apple releases we will run to take it! Dream on!!!

Take your lesson now. Pfff i am pretty ungry! For one simple reason! They could give us something better, but they chose to take more money from the 2nd edition. So ok! I ll buy the second edition! Or maybe the 3rd if it dows not meet the criteria of a computer machine that has the Aplle logo on it.

iPad - failblog dot org. will be in the first page for over a year.

They will release i5 macbook pros? iphone 4G, maybe they are putting a camera on iPad?? SO LET THEM SAY IT IN PUBLIC!

I dont believe neither one article from gizmodo, macworld and NY times, or Wpost! You are all paid journalists and you cannot alter our decision.

The prices of both have already been cut.

The $1499 MacBook Air used to be $1799.
The $1799 MacBook Air used to be $3099.
The $229 AppleTV used to be $329.

These things are 2-3 YEARS old. What did you expect?
The biggest price drop came from the SSD, nothing that wasn't totally expected...

a MUCH better comparison would be the first iPhone, which saw very quick and substantial price drops.

It's interesting how people are worried about the iPad cannabalizing the sales of other Apple devices. If there is anyone to cannabalize Apple sales, it's Apple.

This also shows how dedicated Apple is to the idea of pushing this type of technology. Apple foresees this as the future of computing and they definitely want to lead the revolution. This is the start and they are going to do whatever they can to push strong sales. These items really sell themselves though.

in order to push sales they should add a webcam, HD video out (correct me if that is already possible) and a SD card slot and maybe an USB port.

maybe iworks for free and mobile me for cheap.

this would help more than a price cut. also I think it's possible that there will soon be 128GB versions.

I agree. The pricing structure on the memory does not hold up to scrutiny.

I think the pricing is perfect. 16GB is not enough for me. So I accepted to pay $729 for the 32GB/G3 version. But then it's only 100 bucks more for 64GB which is a lot more useful. So I will buy the top end model. Marketing works perfectly on me........
