It is not the price that would keep me from buying, it is the lack of features.

Some can be fixed with software, like adding Flash and multitasking but some will take hardware revisions - SD slot, camera, HDMI etc.

A big iPod Touch just isn't that compelling to me...

:apple: makes a 30 pin SD card slot adapter it's at the bottom of the iPad features page.

Flash would be great, but I am seeing how this could be used in my house more and more lately.

It's easy to lose interest in something you can't buy.

Apple needs to stop this nonsense of debuting a product and not shipping it until X months later. They could have done the keynote next quarter.

You mean a few weeks AFTER the release of the product?
Jeez. Being impatient out of your mind is your issue, not everybody else's. It is very common that Apple announces stuff and delivers 30 days later. This time it's 60 days. omg. A totally different situation. NOT.

The current configuration has 6 model choices...way too many. I would like to see 2 choices: a 32 gig and a 64 gig both with 3G built in and a front facing video cam. Apple can price these choices based on user demand. Just my 2 cents!

And they say Apple never gives choice.

Why should Apple be any different than all the slate manufacturers who exhibited a month earlier and still haven't even announced ship dates other then "later in 2010"? Even the HP Ballmer held up in front of his jelly belly hasn't even had a price announcement, much less a ship date.

To get the facts straight: they ARE different. They showed an actual product and gave quite a palpable shipping date in the very near future.

This isn't a blockbuster product, don't believe the hype. It's a larger iPod touch and an eBook reader. It's not a replacement for netbooks, since it's not actually practical for real work (has anyone tried actually editing text on an iPod touch or iPhone?). They will sell initially because of the hype and then fade somewhat and require Apple to prop it up a bit if it wants to make a dent in the ebook market.

This really is a ho-hum product, I can see Apple rethinking it in the future and thinking about how a product like this relates to their laptops. Maybe then they'll come out with something interesting... that runs the full OS.

Finally. We have members who actually use common sense and apply logic.

Apple half-assed this product. They added a e-Book to a 10" iPod touch. They didn't add any other compelling new first party apps with new gestures or 'Apple-esque" features that one would expect.

I find it odd that everyone is shocked at how cheap the thing is compared to their expectations (there was even an audible collective gasp from the audience during the keynote!) and at the same time everyone is complaining about how expensive the thing is.

that's probably because $500 is cheap for Apple. But it's still expensive for the niche it's supposed to fill: Netbooks. I got my netbook for less than $300, and it's probably about as fast as the iPad. My friend got his for $350, and runs OS X on it. That will do more than the iPad, and it's cheaper too. So yeah, $500 is good in the Apple world, but still about $150 too much in the real world.

Drop the price to $350 and give it an SD and USB slot, and I'd be sold...

Yet people will still find something to complain about...

I'm buying this as an ebook reader and web browser. I care less about Flash; I just installed v10.1 beta and got a kernel panic for the first time. Adobe should make their player open source so Apple can fix it themselves.

Do you know what beta means? Maybe that's why you're having a problem....

on second thought, they're probably going to need to hike the price to pay for all these copyright lawsuits.

Personally I hope once the iPad flops, Amazon sticks it to the publishers, dropping ebook pricing to $6.99, and sells them at a gain at the publishers expense. Authors getting screwed by your publishing company? Come join Amazon Publishing co!

3G cost

Many folks here complain about the 3G cost. It is not just the 3G but includes the GPS and Compass. These are big deals to me, I cannot wait to have this big GPS in my RV. In fact I cannot imagine not getting an iPad without GPS. Maybe it is not that important to geeks, but most folks I know are very excited about 3G, GPS and compass.

The biggest problem with the iPad is not the pricing, it's the lack of perceived value for consumers.

I'm the local alpha geek and even I am scratching my head about the iPad.

That is because the iPad is not for geeks, let alone "alpha geeks". It is mainly for mom+dad who don't want to be hassled with computers. Some geekier people might find a good use for it (e.g. professional photographers who want to show their work to clients come into my mind), but these are small, fractioned groups that wouldn't buy enough of these things to justify its existence.

They need to fix the 3G version issue. $130 for a 3G version is stupid. There shouldn't be an additional cost for a stupid small antenna/radio - just put it in all units and then make the unlimited cost $20/month.

Also, I certainly won't be buying one until the rev. 2 ... and until text books come to the iPad, as I am a college student.

The compass is separate and comes in the WIFI model as it also does in the Touch.

Who is dumb enough to purchase a $499 iPad over a $99 iPhone? They both pretty much do the same. Only bigger screen and advanced programming on the iPad. I can't see Apple selling a lot of these the first year. Prices will come way down for them.

You're right, they should quit while they are ahead and close business and recycle any remains of the iPad.

Dumb enough

I am dumb enough to buy one for me and one for the wife. I am also dumb enough to have added another 100 APPL after waiting for the 10% drop following the presentation. Always happens BTW. So iCal me as I predict this device will be a huge success. I bet on it, already made $600 on those few shares. and expect to make a lot more. Buy APPL and you will soon be able to buy iPads.

No, its not just for 'mom and dad', its for anyone who wants to perform tasks, not dick around with computers. That includes a LOT of us 'super users' who know we don't have to carry around a heavy-duty content/application development platform with us everywhere we go.

Again... I get tremendously more real-world usefulness out of my iPhone than I do out of my home desktop machine. The one-size-fits all (or at least fits the priesthood) model is dead. Long live the useful computer.

I hear you

Hello fellows,

DO YOU SEE that when all together scream and shout that this think sucks (=could be better but they didnt make it on puprose) somebody hear us and inform mr. Steve.

Well guess what Steve and you ugly-face investors that give interviews everyday:

Things didnt come better in Europe for iPad. We dont want lower price. We want a nice tablet computer. Your stocks are decreasing day by day and you dont consider why...

Put a USB port there! I want to take files from my friends you know! HELLO!
and put a 3G camera there! Jesus! we are on 2010!

Most of the polls so 85+ are not buying the current version!

FAILUREEEEEEEEEEEEE
FAILUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

And you deserve such a failure, because you think that whatever Apple releases we will run to take it! Dream on!!!

Take your lesson now. Pfff i am pretty ungry! For one simple reason! They could give us something better, but they chose to take more money from the 2nd edition. So ok! I ll buy the second edition! Or maybe the 3rd if it dows not meet the criteria of a computer machine that has the Aplle logo on it.

iPad - failblog dot org. will be in the first page for over a year.

They will release i5 macbook pros? iphone 4G, maybe they are putting a camera on iPad?? SO LET THEM SAY IT IN PUBLIC!

I dont believe neither one article from gizmodo, macworld and NY times, or Wpost! You are all paid journalists and you cannot alter our decision.

I"m a hardcore apple fan and I buy many apple products. I usually cut apple some slack, but this iPad has me puzzled. There are some major missing features that would make it the "best" browsing and sharing experience.

I was hoping that i can use this thing to share my keynote with other, so I was hoping for a way to connect it to an external monitor, "to share pictures and videos, etc..." to the entire family. What's the use of being able to view/create beautiful keynote, numbers, pages, pdf, if you can't share it with other people like project partners and family members, etc..... I also was hoping for a front webcam. I know apple usually lack some features in the 1st gen. to make their later gen. look better and have better selling points, but for goodness sake, they even put a webcam in the ipod mini. Why not the iPad? They even had the hole cut out in the frame, but chose not to put a webcam in it. What the heck?

Steve, I'll be glad to pay you $100 more if you put the webcam in the 1st gen. iPad. I hope your first gen. iPad fail.

I'll wait until it has at least a webcam.

$99 iPhone + 2 year contract is substantially more expensive than a $499 iPad.

Maybe you can explain to me how mom+dad+thekids are going to share this device?

How are they going to manage their different web bookmarks, email accounts and app preferences on a device that has a common interface and no user accounts?

I can just see how well it pans out to have everyone in the family having their email all on this device and the fights that ensue when someone reads another family members mail or sees what web pages they have visited.

Apple has a lot to address with this thing before they sell the first million, that's for sure.

Do you know what beta means? Maybe that's why you're having a problem....

Nobody knows what beta means. That's because of corporations like Google that keep nearly every application they produce in beta for three years minimum, but make sure it is usable by just about anyone who wants to use it. The term beta just doesn't mean anything anymore.

That's precisely why you don't get it. Its designed for people who are into tasks and productivity, not the computer itself.
Its designed to disappear. That's never going to go well with the self-proclaimed priesthood.

I think that I "get" Apple products just fine. I have multiple macs, multiple iPhones and multiple iPods.

Apple products are wonderful because they are well designed, intuitive and absolutely rock at their intended purpose.

I fail to see how an iPad shows up in a family home and does this for multiple family members.

Or maybe, since it's just a giant iPhone at this stage, everyone in the family is expected to get their own?

It's pretty sad that even with a 60 day lead time on ship date Apple couldn't make a more compelling case for why people want this product.

I'm sure it will sell reasonably well and will quickly be adopted in certain niche areas such as the medical field.

What I don't see is a reason that the typical family will want a device that's aimed at a single user.

That is because the iPad is not for geeks, let alone "alpha geeks". It is mainly for mom+dad who don't want to be hassled with computers.

Right until Mom & Dad visits some of their favorite web pages, and calls their geek son or daughter to explain to them why there are little blue boxes on their new shiny iPad, while the same page showed up fine on their old and cranky Windows XP desktop.

The thing hasn't even come out yet, and you all seem to know what Apps are on it. Developers are now just getting started making apps for the iPad, I'm sure they'll be bigger, better, and more powerful than what's out there now for the iPhone/iTouch. How many of you have seen one in person? I haven't! It's too early to judge something before you get to actually play with it, and see what Apps are being developed at release time. :apple:

Still puzzled why people who love the iPhone/Touch yet recognize its limitations don't see the value in a similar device but with a bigger screen for a more enjoyable experience while not near a computer, but not "on the go" either. What is so wrong with wanting basic computer functionality without the burden of a laptop.

Seems to me the H8TRs are like little girls who ask for a pony for their birthday but get a bike instead, and retaliate by saying bike's sux.
