Any idea why they don't allow customisation at the physical stores ?? It's not like adding a bit of ram is that difficult - is it ?

Since most of their computers have the RAM soldered to the motherboard to prevent users from managing their own upgrades? Yes, yes it is.

There's quite a difference between meeting someone at Starbucks and spending $4 on a latte versus meeting at the Apple Store and dropping $1700 on a MacBook Pro, Angela.
Exactly, unless Apple intends on putting coffee shops inside their retail locations, I don't really see the idea of it becoming a meeting place happening, especially with chairs that look as uncomfortable as those do.

Dear Angela,

People meet at coffee shops because it's traditional to do so. You meet for the communal buzz, the atmosphere, the ambiance, the smell and sound of grinding beans and of brewing shots, the warm browns of the decor and the plush leather sofas, how exactly does this translate into a sterile computing environment? I'm getting fed up with all these people attempting to force how things will turn out - you cannot plan, manufacture and deploy how human habits pan out and how that causes them to gather in certain places for certain reasons - you're not cranking out chocolate bars here, you're trying to synthesise a FORCED environment into which you want to FORCE the organic evolution of human habits... for your own dignity and integrity, PLEASE... STOP, it's so contrived, arrogant and presumptuous of you to think this will happen as you envision it to.

People still meet at Starbucks? I'm unconsciously avoiding all of them then as I never meet with my friends in a Starbucks.
We hang out where the coffee is good and the locals create a great ambience, and that is never a Starbucks.

I dont like that comparison...

It always amuses me how people think they're hip by "hating" Starbucks. Sheesh, if I liked the look of a coffee shop - ANY coffee shop - and fancied a coffee, I'd walk in and buy one. People with THIS degree of obsession about where they drink their coffee, need to... well... re-adjust their priorities, shall I say.

Maybe I can combine all of those little boxes into something that would be at least semi comfortable and supportive to sit on for more than 5 minutes? Who on earth thought those things were a great idea? Maybe at their next board meeting Apple should ditch their cushy ergonomic chairs for some small wooden boxes?!

I think maybe it's a sofa that they've not got around to assembling yet, and the cushions got stuck in customs. :p

Does Angela really believe her own words? Without a cafe experience, people are not going to hang out with their friends at Apple Stores, and she has to know that.

Her Apple Store redesign seems like folly. As a stockholder, I'm getting to the point where I think she needs to be replaced.

Oh, good. For a fast minute, I was worried I wasn't on MacRumors until I started reading comments on yet another ridiculous reason like an Apple Store opening to criticize Angela. The only other comments missing here are that Apple is doomed and Tim Cook makes Lucifer look like Santa Claus.

Oh, for f**** sake. Is everything you do in your life golden? Do you ride unicorns?
[doublepost=1496000262][/doublepost]Apple should develop their own Apple TV show, named Ahrendts & Cue, The Triumph of Overpaid and Clueless.

Three days this article has been published and still the geezer on the right is wearing those shoes and giving them the thumbs up. Has he no shame? And have they caught the bloke who 'designed' them yet? Please find him before somebody else buys a pair!

I loved being in Singapore, really sweet people, good for them

You haven't been around then, Singaporeans are not known to be nice people in South East Asia, I know, I've been living there for quite some time.
Most Singaporeans don't have manners/etiquette, you'll notice that right away when nobody looks behind them if they walk through a door, this is just one example, spitting is another one amongst others.

This doesn't mean I don't like SG, I love it, the temperature is great, most things work as intended, for instance public transport, and Marina bay, China Town, Little India and other areas are just good to hang out.(Busy though in weekends)

I think the implication here is that Apple wants you to come to their stores daily. hang out. chat with people, be social in their store. They want the Store to be like Starbucks.

the comment you are referring to pokes at a potential hole in this goal. People gather at starbucks because it's part of social eating. it's the product of coffee and snacks that helped define Starbucks as the "meeting spot", since a large population equates eating with social.

So customers of starbucks can come back everyday for their $4 latte, and be sociable. People do not go back to the Apple Store daily to buy $1600 laptops or $900 phones. These are items people only do a few times every few years.
Agree, but Angela's masterplan will be around Dongles, WatchBands, TouchBar wipers, and other drudgy gimmickery that create returning customers (except you and me)
Today at Apple: DongleFest! Buy 5, get 1 free, Dongle Subscription schemes, discounts on 10 etc.
It is sad but that's the kind of customer tie-in that makes their brains running
And oh, with Apple devices merely becoming Dongle holders, who would complain about refurbed, 4 yr old designs today (because there is less opportunity for innovation of course, especially for lamenters)

I was just going to say the same thing, Apple becoming another starbucks is a pipe-dream for exactly the reason already stated. Start selling $4 ipads , watches & iphones and you'll then probably catch up with starbucks.............ha ha LOL

Where are you in oz? Cause you can't speak for us all :) The Canberra store is seldom filled. Most people there are getting support. Apple support is world class, actually the best I've experienced .

Do you work for apple, that you can make an assessment on the customers coming in?

I'm not aware of Samsung, google or Microsoft having physical stores in Australia, two of those being software focused...and apple being a hardware company first. So Samsung v apple, apple clear winner .

I've regularly visited Sydney George St, Broadway, and the Chermside Bris Store, once for a MacBook with failed DVD after a drop on security conveyor in trip to Ireland - seriously who has a 6 inch drop between 2 parts in the security conveyor system at an airport? Replaced the SuperDrive at no cost, and Chermside, replaced an iPad 2 yrs out of warranty because of iffy touchscreen they decided 'might' be a dodgy internal connector. Every time I'm in I observe and listen.

Samsung have a Store just up Road from George St and it always had more staff than cx. Google and MS are not just SW and from friends, trying to get support on their hardware is a struggle, then try to get support on MS SW. Sat next to a guy with Surface 4 on a 3 hr flight and listened to him bitch about it and support for most of the flight. Meanwhile I wrote 500 words of my next book in my iPad Pro.

I don't visit Apple stores anymore for the reasons I stated above.Apple customer service is very good, but their products have become dull, uninspired and lackluster in what they used to offer. Rubbish? Since I only have used Apple since 1984, the comparison to Samsung, et all...is moot. Each to their own......
And I wrote an Accounting package on the very first Mac, so my experience is just as strong and relevent. I also developed a serial add on card for the Apple II. The quality is still there. Nothing dull, uninspiring or lacklustre, unless you have the unreasonable expectation that every new release will change the world. The comparison with Samsung is very appropriate. They aspire to be Apple, yet fall sort every attempt.

Apple support is great. I've always got great support when I've been here.

I have to admit Amazon is also very good.

In all fairness, when it comes to software support Apple is not much better than MS, they will just replace the whole unit instead of sitting here with the customer trying to resolve it. I own a 2013 Mac Pro, it's Bluetooth was shocking , dunno if it still is, apple were going to replace it for a know firmware issue I researched, waste of time, so I just went wired. I love apple support, those of all the issues I've had , they mostly did not resolve them, they replaced the hardware.....guess that is a solution that keeps the customer happy.

Soft comfortable seats, internet and coffee were my reasons to work and meet at Starbucks.

With these wooden low boxes and without coffee, she's missing the point entirely.

You can go to Starbucks, casually grab a coffee or something to eat and hang out.
Nobody is going to casually grab a MacBook to hang out at Apple.

I'm probably not the only one who would feel weird using Apple as a place to meet people when I don't have any reason to be there.

I don't think this whole "Meet me at Apple" thing is going to work.

Well, if you like hardware that hasn't been updated for years and still priced as if it's new. If that makes you happy about not being dull, uninspiring or lackluster, so be it. I don't think I stated anything about expectations.
Quality...you haven't been here very long. I suggest you go read some threads about product issues. Sorry, your experience is not relevant.....the first Mac is how old?
Sorry I won't post to your next reply as you will be ignored. Have a nice day!

Sounds like a description of the older generation. Younger folks I think are generally better in the aspects you mentioned.

You probably don't know Singapore well enough. Almost the half of the population are non citizens, just living and working on various work passes. Many of those come from mainland China. And many of them do not have any manners.

The actual Singaporeans are quite nice people.

I don't agree with JustPerry. I have visited Singapore for almost 30 years on business, at one stage every 2 weeks. I found all the people I dealt with just great, and they often spent their own time when I was there on weekends entertaining me, showing me the sights and the great food.

When I've stayed there on holidays, I've also found it a great experience. Yes, like anywhere (think New York) you do get the occasional crankies, but I love the place.

Looks like a lovely store. Will definitely drop by when I'm in Singapore :). Angela is right, I'll probably hang out & play some Nintendo Switch with friends at the Apple store

4 of the 5 best selling smartphones are made by Apple.
Selective statistics can paint any picture. Despite the battery episode, more people still buy Samsung smartphones than Apple ones. In fact, six out of seven smartphones sold are Android.

their espresso beans are usually burnt too far and too bitter tasting. it's not good coffee except if you like piles of sugar and cream.

When I was working in Dubai I met people in Starbucks because of lack of alternatives for better coffee places.

there's no hating in my message. I don't meet there when I'm at home..

I find your reply arrogant and hating, it's too easy.
