We're in the politics section, please go ahead and articulate

The post above yours (#115) makes a valid point

What incentive is there to report against the Gov if the BBC is their "mouthpiece?"

We might be on a politics forum, but I live in England. Somethings I’ll say some I won’t. But those who know know, just watch their coverage of Gaza and Israel and you’ll see.

A country (my country) that does not have the spine to introduce any compulsory ID card. There is no obligation to carry any ID at all. You don’t even need to carry a license if you are driving. You just have to promise to visit a police station with it later. What a joke! And yet behind the scenes they are happy to snoop around what we do on our phones.

If you live in the country I think you are living in, then that’s because of the many different jurisdictions with overlapping territories and sometime conflicting political goals. It was designed that way, with the intent that the Constitution would be the arbiter, if conflicts were litigated.

As the late Rush Limbaugh would say, “Gridlock is good!” Otherwise you get into situations, where we have to be concerned about what C.S. Lewis touched on, when he said:

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

And with that, my plan to move over entirely over to Linux has just taken a big step forward. F&*% any government that says the people don't have a right to any privacy. 🤬
What Linux phone will you be using?

I agree with you on hoping Trump pushes back on this, but you’ve fallen hook line and sinker for USAID conspiracy theories.
Such as? There are millions if not billions of dollars being wasted/redirected to friends of the US government. Often to subvert the wishes of the average US citizen.

What "conspiracy theories" are there (which will be confirmed as fact tomorrow)? Even the government funded Politico quoted Rahm Emanuel, “You don’t fight every fight. You don’t swing at every pitch. And my view is — while I care about the USAID as a former ambassador — that’s not the hill I’m going to die on,”

Executive orders are not legislation, and cannot upend legislation. Any order Trump signs that is not within what the legislative branch has written into law, and what the constitution says, will be blocked by courts.

He's already rigged the courts ... and their entire plan is to just push through and wreck everything while everyone watches and screams "but you can't do that!!!!"

"watch me" he's saying

Donald Trump will do anything he wants until physically stopped

The sooner people internalize that, the better

I think that comment is a bit over my head. I’m a few beers in 🍻 My country is the UK - that’s what I meant (although I do not live there at the moment).

I think that’s a defeatist attitude. The court systems are not “rigged;” they are more partisan than they were.
And we’ve seen many reasonable rulings from Trump appointed judges. And many judges are not Trump appointed. (Most of them)
He cannot do anything he wants, although he wishes he could, and his followers seem to think he can.
I am concerned about a potential constitutional crisis, however. But I was responding to a post claiming the UK system is better. Our system is fine, but it is being rotted out. It is happening many places.

I have many qualms with the "Left" over the last 10-15 years or so, but it's beyond hilarious to see assertions that left wing ideology are what's leading to authoritarian policies across the world

That's literally 180 degrees flipped from reality

The Internet has truly broken human civilization
I just posted about this. The Left’s ideology used to be Marxism, in varying forms of manifestation, but Marxism, still. The problem is that Marxism at its core has no principles that are based in axiomatic truths. Rather, it’s a small step from Marxism to rejecting the concept of a universal Truth that we can recognize (to be sure, in limited ways, but not to the extent that it becomes irrelevant). With Truth gone, so is Beauty and Goodness. Then, like I indicated, all that’s left is Power, in other words Might Makes Right. That’s what we are seeing in the U.K. and the E.U. In the U.S. we are seeing a struggle unfold between two camps, and right now the Left is in the losing position. May Truth, Beauty and Goodness prevail!

On your other point, without the internet we would never have known about many of these goings on!

That's called rigging them in this case .. purging them as fast as possible and installing ideologues up and down the chain ... with the "top" fully in the bag now (Supreme Court)

Honestly, you have to be overlooking the details of what's so swiftly been taking place to not be seriously alarmed

The left is not a monolith. Marxism has influenced it, but it is not “Marxist”.

I have no idea what you are talking about with axiomatic truths. This sounds misinformed. Marxism is something like a scientific theory.

We are seeing more and more power consolidate on both sides of the political spectrum.

Apple is not "above the government" in jurisdictions in which it operates

They will comply
It will never happen in my opinion because if they do then the UK government will be accused of behaving like China who install back doors into technology their companies make.

As autocratic and theocratic regimes are always buying up UK turf and buying off politicians how long before they plant an Elon Musk and DOGE in the UK and hand over all those backdoor access to Saudi, Russia and China?

I am alarmed.

But I think you’re being sensationalist.

Vlad is loving this!
I'm sure Xi Jingping is laughing over tea while the US destroys itself
The Saudis ... mission accomplished!

Security officials in the United Kingdom have demanded that Apple create a back door allowing them to retrieve all the content any Apple user worldwide has uploaded to the cloud, people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post.

This is the biggest WTF to me like what do I have to do with the UK? They have no business spying on me.

They better try fixing trash on the streets, stabbings, drug dealers, and cars parked literally on the road than telling US corporation owes them something.

But to be all completely fair, it is foolish to trust your data to any cloud service

All my other comments aside, to state the (hopefully) obvious

Yes -- this is horrendous to see the U.K. doing this

I just don't expect it to be at all unique to that jurisdiction given what the world looks like right now
