I ran into this slide to upgrade bug twice. I updated my. 5S OTA (from 7.1.2) and it occurred. A forced restart actually allowed me to get past it. Then I did a reset all setting later and the reset got stuck at about 10%. The only way out of this was a dfu restore through iTunes. Of course I'd been hanging on to iTunes 11.x so I had to update that to 12.x (bugger, I liked the old interface). I set up as new then restored my backup from the previous night (a 7.1.2 backup) and the slide to upgrade bug reoccurred. Forced restart got me past and I'm not game to try the reset all settings option again. Hopefully a 7.0.1 update is released ASAP for this one. I pity those who didn't back up first or don't have a computer with iTunes installed to help out.
If this is related to ios 7 users updating I'm not surprised if it didn't show up in beta testing. How many beta testers would have been holdouts to ios 7? Most would surely have been early adopters who already updated to 8.x wouldn't they?

Sadly I thought it time to update the iOS9 on my iPad2 - I had have done all the steps that Apple Outlines said to do - I managed to get iTunes to recognise the iPad and selected the option to restore the backup I made before I started - but have just been told by iTunes that there is an error and it can't be done. It looks to me that my only solution is to restore factory settings - think I'll go and have some lunch and think about it - maybe a magic fairy will have fixed it on my return - but I'm not holding my breath - sigh

Apple has published a new support document on its website that outlines a fix for users experiencing an unresponsive "Slide to Upgrade" screen after updating to iOS 9 (via iPhoneHacks).

The issue has affected a growing number of users on the Apple Support Communities, MacRumors discussion forum and social media.

Apple recommends restoring your device from an iTunes backup to resolve the problem.Apple released iOS 9 on Wednesday for iPhone 4s or later, iPad 2 or later and the fifth-generation iPod touch or later.

I would still like to see a board-level Chief Quality Officer added to Apple's Board of Directors. There have been far too many high profile, glossed-over software bugs in the past few iOS/OSX releases. We need a return to the days of "It just works."

My one friend just told me their 13 yr old kid accidentally upgraded to iOS 9 on their iPhone 5 and now the kid is asking why his vista laptop doesn't see the phone anymore.
By Monday morning there should be a tsunami of these types of complaints piling up on apple's doorstep causing them to do a reversal.

Hi All
I have encountered the IOS 9 problem on my IPAD. I have tried to reboot - no luck I tried to go in, via my MAC, to Itunes and restore from there. If you have "Find My Iphone" enabled on your IPAD, you are instructed to go into your IPAD and disable this first. Obviously this cant be done because your IPAD is as dead as a brick. Has anybody had any success over coming this issue. Whats the latest from Apple. People are in limbo over this.

Just upgraded yesterday and today I had a similar issue. The buttons worked, so i could start Siri and make the ringtone louder and so on but the screen was not reacting at all. The trick with force restart helped me.

Ok if you are having this issue do this: this is what Apple Genius Bar did to fix my no responsive screen.

  1. Force it in to recovery mode. This is the last of the last resorts before you contact Apple for help. Turn your phone off and leave it for about 20 seconds before connecting it to a computer via USB while holding down the Home button .
Make sure you were holding it down when you connected it. When the Connect to iTunes Screen pops up release the Home button. Then use iTunes to restore your device. This will wipe the iPhone clean, but hopefully you’ve backed it up and can restore it through iTunes.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to fix the problem for everyone. I did this as well with Apple tech and it didn't resolve it. Waiting for a phone call today at 3PM from a tech who said by then they "should" have an update coming out.

Having Apple tell people to restore from backups is like having to reinstall or restart MS windows to have it just work. Lamest fix.

One of the reasons I bought a Samsung note 3 as my smartphone is cause I don't have to connect it to my computer. I've never had to reset or restore my note 3. It has an uptime measured in weeks, not hours.

One of the benefits people say that iphones have is the no fragmentation factor. If that was true, updates would work flawlessly on all iphones, not just some.

Well, i've reported 6 bugs, with detailed steps to reproduce them and screenshots. Got 0 responses. Only one was fixed. -.-
Makes one wonder if they read bug reports at all
Priorities play a role too.

If the steps outlined in Apples support document are not working see post #59 in this thread. Also as a last resort google DFU restore and follow the info to perform a DFU restore on the device.

Same here. Phone is unresponsive and none of the Apple 'fixes' fixed it.

G@d D#mmit

I did a full backup before the update but w-t-f I can't get the phone unbricked to restore it.

No problems upgrading an iPhone 5 and an iPad mini. Tried to do a first gen iPad and that's when trouble started. It froze 1/3 of the way through the restart after the upgrade. Yes, I waited a full hour and it moved no further. Did a hard restart. That got me to the "slide to upgrade screen, but after sliding, the touchscreen was unresponsive. Tried several restarts and hard restarts to no avail.

Fortunately I always do a backup before an upgrade. As a past MSFT user anything less is suicide. The only remaining option was a hard restard to recovery mode, factory reset and then a restore from my backup. That solved it.

Procedure to enter recovery mode:

Connect to iTunes. Do a hard reset by holding home and power button simultaneously until it restarts, but do not release the buttons at the Apple logo. Keep holding until the device shows you are connected to iTunes and iTunes brings up a recovery box. Follow the prompts for a factory restore. After it completes, restore the device from your backup.

That is what worked for me. Probably the mistake I made was not restarting the iPad before I did the upgrade so as to clear any crap residing in memory.

Another tip for those that have not upgraded yet. When backing up to, restoring or upgrading from iTunes please remember to put the device in Airplane mode. An incoming call or text can wreck your work in progress.

Welcome to the world of computing.

Quite a switch from the old days when it "just worked", huh?

Seriously, DFU mode for upgrades is the new normal? Wasn't the whole idea of OTA upgrades was that iOS could be a PC-free experience? Who the eff is in charge of software quality in Cupertino these days?

The whole reason I got my friends/family on Apple was so I could get out of the tech support business, and it really pisses me off that I need to text those people to warn them, "Don't upgrade to iOS 9 when it prompts you, it could brick your iPhone/iPad."

There were problems in the "good old days" too. But as time goes on things get more complex, more people are using devices, more people become more familiar with internet and social media and forums and all that, and we hear about it more as it happens somewhat more too.

iOS 9 has been a pretty bad release so far quite honestly.

So much lag and instability on many devices. 4s, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, and some iPads. So much that I had to downgrade to 8.4.1. Sure, it's just a ".0" release for now, but it gives a terrible first impression considering iOS 9 is supposed to improve the experience of iOS 8. Not even close. The only improvement I saw was the battery life.

I hope Apple makes some drastic improvements with iOS 9.1.

There are folks that rant this with every iOS version and dozens more saying they had no issues. It wouldn't be an Apple release if this didn't happen

"It just works" is not and was never about no bugs etc. it was a response to the days when getting a new computer meant hours of installing the OS, applications etc. macs asked about five minutes of questions and boom it just works

Yeah, it was mostly related to that and being able to use the OS and the device fairly quickly without much need of someone explaining a lot of things and looking up things in manuals and support documentation.

I have learnt to hold off major upgrades until any showstopper issues have a chance to pop up. Even then, the internet being what it is, you get a thread like this for upgrade issues, and it seems like everyone and their dog have bricked their phone with a disastrous upgrade, while in reality it is probably just a small minority, issues that can happen on any platform, mobile or desktop, due to all the varying factors. And when it happens to someone, they vent, it is a disaster, and they lament the Good Ol' Days, some sideswipe at iTunes, a comment of current management and how it would never happen under Steve, etc. Par for the course. Happens every major upgrade. Go to an Android or Windows Mobile site, get the same discussions with a different cast of characters.
Nonetheless, some interesting advice here for when I do upgrade. First and foremost, always, ALWAYS, do a backup just prior to upgrading, preferably a full iTunes one, which is more thorough than an iCloud backup. Stop whinging about iTunes, it is not that bad. No different than upgrading ANY computer, be it your Mac, PC, or mobile. And though it is supposed to work around low storage, I will try to clear a bit of space. For me, that means deleting Instagram, which always builds a monstrous cache nearing 2Gb. Once reinstalled and signed in, everything will be back to normal. I've done this a few times to clear space. Another one can be to temporarily remove music, audiobooks, or eBooks using iTunes. Photos are automatic now, even though the thumbnails do take up quite a lot of space on their own. Big games where progress data isn't important is another candidate.
Further from posts here, I think I will turn off Find My iPhone and remove my password as a simple precaution, and do a restart so it is fresh.

My iPhone 6 Plus is completely unresponsive.
Tried all the tricks in the book, from hard reset to restore, to resetting all the setting and start back.
And I get a very nice flickering from the top of the screen.
Tomorrow I'm going to buy a Samsung, cause ai do not have an Apple Store in my city and I cannot stay without a phone.

Well lucky you "msandersen" - you have the benefit of all our angst here on this forum.
I do understand how things go - I was a software beta tester..... I checked the internet - obviously not enough and gave it a go.
I did back up before I started - always have recommended this in the past to customers.
How have I got on? Disastrous - so far.
I have re-installed the backup - managed eventually to get it to do that.
I have gone into recovery mode and re-installed everything.
I have actually got to put in my passcode - TWICE - been told I have successfully upgraded everything;
enabled zoom;chosen my wifi connections
AND THEN
the "White Screen of Death" - with ">slide to upgrade" - EVRYTIME
I have got here by various routes - this last screen is just not working.
If there is no update from Apple then I will have to wipe either via iTunes or use the Tenorshare Reiboot if that fails.

I would love to have not started on this journey - but hey ho - such is life. I shall not panic - but I feel very sad for those who are panicked by this and understand their loss.
Living ever in hope!
