I agree. While there may be some marginal improvement using the same version of apps b/c of updated OS-level stuff, apps will have to be updated to take advantage of all the new improvements. I'm sure a lot of apps will break w/ all the changes (especially those that enhance the Finder).

Blah  I don't like you....

ok not you personally, just your comment..... I never upgraded to Vista because my window apps would break, now you come and tell me that with these changes there is a chance that the $1000 in apps I invested in this year could break? I just bought all new applications to mostly rid myself of Windows dependance and switch my entire platform entirely.

there goes my hopes in the next year or so on upgrading to a macbook pro and the new 30'' LED display that can power my mac. Looks like by the time when I am ready to do that (have the money that is), snow will be out and all my current software will be out the window.....

well, maybe the software writers will see the benefit and offer free upgrades. one software I bought was designed for tiger, but had a free batch for using on leopord, since they use safari and safari was a complete rewrite between tiger and leopard....

Either that or my lifestyle better change by that time and I won't need all those apps.

Although..... running Windows on a Virtual could be sweet for my needed SQL and .net apps. I would love to see a virtual machine that can make use of this technology and really help the windows apps.....

does anyone remember the amazing stuff that was SUPPOSED to go into Vista? Now it's just a shell of what it should have been & even the stuff we're left with doesn't work right. Took them 10 years to make that crap. Now 'Windoze 7' / ("Snow Vista" lol) supposed to be out soon? Honestly I don't think they will do anything good with that. & even if it is as stable as XP with some eye candy, it will not be close to Snow Leopard.

The new version of Windows should be "Eyesore" :p

but Honestly... wouldn't it blow your mind if they made something better than XP this time around? Good thing apple is always working so I have faith they will still beat the pants of em' even if MS makes a decent OS ;)

Honestly, what is "wrong" with vista..did you ever use it? I really like os x but i use vista as well and i never had any problems..never!

My impression is OS X is a fairly lightweight OS...more so than Vista certainly. While I completely see OpenCL uses for third-party apps (esp. pro apps), I wonder what kind of performance increase we'll see out of the OS itself and the Apple apps that ship with the machine e.g. iLife type stuff?

I don't like how some apps will more than likely break, either. Hopefully, if they do, it'll be for a good reason. If not, I'd be really p***ed off w/ Apple. I'd also be p***ed at 3rd party app makers that don't make free/inexpensive updates. Sounds like there's going to be a LOT of under the hood changes, which would break quite a few apps. Not to sound like a jackass, but for home use, you don't necessarily have to get Snow Leopard unless there's an app out there you really want/need that needs it. Work is a different story as you probably aren't in control of what OS you have to use.

Basically, it allows applications easy access to the computing resources provided by GPUs and multi-core CPUs. This is possible now, but its a bit complicated so developers don't really use it. The idea of this is that it makes writing applications that use these resources easier so more developers use it, increasing application performance :).

Yup - and it goes one further by making a _single_ API for use with multiple different computing resources. NVIDIA has it's way of making use of its GPU resources, ATI probably has a different way, threading on multi-core CPUs has been around forever, but is different than coding for GPUs, etc.

What this is suggesting is that with a single API, you could grab onto any available compute resource and make use of it whether it's a physical CPU, GPU, or any other thing that happens to come along. Now that is a powerful idea - and it moves the responsibility of figuring out how to enable any given compute resource onto the OS (where it belongs!).

Here is one of the problems that happened with Vista (oh and I gave up trying to follow all the articles since my job has a somewhat vested interest in MS - you will see why I gave up below; just too confusing ):

Yes, a lot was supposed to go in Vista, but with all the monopoly lawsuits; they had to pull a lot out. Then the trade commission baulked because with all they pulled out, it did not live up to technological standards of today; so they had to find some way to put some of it back in without being sued. then they rushed released it, because they had not had a new OS in ages and people were getting pissed.

So to cover themselves, they said this is an interim OS, not the long waited longhorn you all hoped for. Then they said Windows 7 is the long awaited longhorn. Now it looks like because of the vista debacle, Windows 7 is a "Snow Vista" as the touted SP1 (or Mohave) did not fix everything and they need to come out with a new Vista to hopefully fix everything. So the new vista or 7 fits there hoped for 2 year release cycle, by which time hopefully they have everything figured out to release the long aclaimed longhorn in another 2 years.

so what are windows users left with - 14 years between stable, usable OS releases with new features?? I know home users complain about Vista, but I heard the I/t world is even more upset with its functionality and downgrading all machines to XP.

 - I sure am. Can't keep track of what is what and what I am supposed to be getting with what and when.

Hopefully with Snow Leopard my Mac Pro with two 2.8GHz Xeons and an 8800GT will be able to go from Warp Speed to Ludicrous Speed with no problems whatsoever.

At the same time, if Snow Leopard works on PPC machines, it will allow my 12" Powerbook to go from Molasses Slow to Turtle Slow.

:D

SLI iMac

That would be nice if they added two graphics cards to the iMac, not a 9400M and a 9600M like the MacBook Pro, but two 9600Ms in SLI mode.

Is it just me, or has Apple been talking about games a lot lately?

Problem is I use it for home, work and ministry. my work gave me a Dell Optiplex as we use all windows products - but thanks to some issues with Office 2007, I find I have to bring stuff into iwork to spruce it up. Plus, I do video editing (personal and for church). I need the new advantages as I am pinwheeling some apps (only for 3 min or less)... Hmm, looks like I need to upgrade to snow, run vmware with an instance of Leopard I have now for my current, non-invasive apps. I will need VM for my limited windows apps anyway.

Yeesh - either I get a lifestyle change, or I am headed toward a top of the line macbook pro.....

time will tell, once it is released......

+1 :)

nVidia Geforce 8600M GT GPU's

Will this benefit those of us that have MBP's with the nVidia Geforce 8600M GT ?

agreed. i will NEVER use vista on a laptop. I have it running on a decent desktop at home and it's doing fine. there are some settings and stuff that are hard to find but it's fairly stable and run office 2007.

i love my macbook pro and i have vista via bootcamp. it's ok, but no two finger scrolling in vista on any laptop means i will buy macs for the rest of my life.

Xgrid..

So happy we're back on track with Mac OS X rumors!

Just wondering about OpenCL and Grand Central... will the use of Xgrid also become easier now?

Hmm, patent application for something supposed to be an Open standard (OpenCL, OpenCU)? How am I supposed to implement a technology marked as "Open" when Apple has patents for it? Seems like a contradiction to me (or at least good marketing BS).

Patenting something is also a way of keeping it open if the owner chooses - otherwise someone else can patent it and restrict it.
I have no idea what Apple's intention is here.

Yeah, that's the problem: no one thing will please everyone all the time. If it did, life would be pretty boring, though. Plus, when things change, there's always something that breaks. Not fun, but that's the facts as I know & see them. I may be totally wrong of course. I'm only human.

I think the idea that is new here, that we don't see in the traditional threads libraries is a compiler included in the run time. Programs are written using a set of primitives that are compiled at run time for your specific set of hardware.

Isn't that called JIT compilation?

Actually, Prop 8 is pro-society. Throughout history, every civilization that has embraced an “anything goes” philosophy has been wiped from the face of the earth. Not by God, but by basic natural selection. A fundamental respect for the nature of man, both physically and spiritually, is required for the survival of our species … just ask the Romans. A man is naturally supposed to mate with a woman and form a family unit to care for the resulting offspring. Homosexuality is an anomaly and a choice …

I am not condemning homosexuality, just as I am not condemning any other anomalies of the human condition. However, we need to think twice before we start passing laws that force the masses to pretend to think that homosexuality is normal.

Yes on Prop 8 :)

Is Snow Leopard basically a complete rewrite of the whole thing?? if so i find it amazing that people are saying they won't pay full price when it is released
