I think it’s like Google Pay where you can use it without a data connection but periodically you have to enable mobile data/WiFi as it only stores a limited number of ‘tokens’.

No, it’s not. Google Pay uses Host Card Emulation which is why it needs a periodic connection.

Apple Pay uses a secure element - it is simply a Contactless card in a different form factor. All of the required keys are stored on the device itself.

In terms of the U.K. has anyone used Apple Pay frequently without the need to insert a card & enter a PIN unlike contactless whereby X amount of transactions can take place before you have to prove you are the card holder?

What you are referring to are often known as velocity checks and are usually related to transactions performed offline (which the UK has a lot of although that is changing). Mobile wallets always authorise online so this should not occur.

Interestingly, Walmart can get away with not supporting Apple Pay because they've refined the QR-code based Walmart Pay to actually work quite well.

No, Walmart, as can other retailers such as Target, still get away with it because the adoption hasn't reached that critical level yet in which folks "demand" it to the extent that it hurts sufficiently. It's getting there though as witnessed by so many, e.g., Costco, getting it implemented. The more Walmart is an outlier, the more pressure they will face. Most iPhone users aren't going to use the QR code approach and sign up for Walmart Pay when they can simply shop where Apple Pay is accepted. Apple Pay has also smartly started to work with retailers to offer special discounts to customers who use Apple Pay to make a purchase.

Not if I already have my card in my hand, as I said before, it's more secure, not faster, and probably more convenient if you only have your watch with you or your iPhone, my cards are in pockets in my iPhone case, so for me and most people in Europe it doesn't add anything, the states is backwards regarding this issue.
Even so I’d have to find my iPhone in my bag and then take a card out.

If I carried my card about it my hand all the time then I suppose it wouldn’t offer anything but my cards stay in my purse and my purse is in my handbag. So for me it’s quicker to use my watch.

I'm surprised at the number of places I shop that take apple pay. Most big box stores accept apple pay. Most supermarkets, most fast food places. Lowes, home depot accept it. As you noted, Whole Foods and Trader Joes as well. The holdout is CVS.

Most businesses today, that accept NFC, accept apple pay. Apple pay is much faster than fishing a credit card out, unless one is holding the credit card in their hand. Apple pay is also faster, imo, for whatever reason than a credit card. I always try apple pay first, because until you try you don't know.

On average I use apple pay about 5-6 times a day in various establishments. Even in the corporate building the cafe accepts apple pay as do all of the vending machines. The vending machines in my gym also accepts apple pay.

Same here. I’ve actually stopped taking the physical card altogether. Other than occasional restaurants and pop up shops?  Pay is accepted almost everywhere I go and do business, including the chicken shop around the corner.

Correct! Although I don’t think the periodic connection needs to be like how it is on google pay.

I use  Pay all day long and have never had to type in my pin code / anything else other than using my biometric authentication for the transaction.

I know. Even in small local shops. They all have contactless card readers. So can use Apple Pay.

Fair enough.
But as I said before, when the cashier check all items it gives me time to get my card, or even before that when waiting in line.
It amazes me how many people just "pick their nose" while the cashier checks the items, then when asked they still have to rummage through their bag, WTF, couldn't you do that before.

Once Apple Pay is provisioned to the phone, you can use it without a data connection going forward. There is no need for it. Only thing you won’t get are the push notifications obviously.

Yeah I concur with that. Because not only I’ve paid multiple times without any data connection but I also have never had an issue with the transactions.

Even my bodega accepts apple pay. I dont understand Walmart and Target. A few of my friends are scared to use Apple Pay.

As far as the QR codes, I’m not sure that it truly is easier. In my experience, QR codes are kind of clunky. They are also ugly from retail standpoint.

QR codes have the advantage of being usable on virtually any phone, no NFC needed on either side.

That's one reason why airlines still use them for boarding passes, and concert venues usually do too.

The fact that target and Walmart don’t accept Apple Pay makes me like those stores less and less. But I’m guessing they won’t make a change until it starts to hurt their bottom line.

One killer feature that would take Apple Pay to the next level would be if you could link your rewards cards/clubs directly to the transaction itself. For example, Walgreens has a rewards card that you can store in your Apple wallet, but you have to scan it separately, before you scan for your payment. I think it would be amazing if simply using Apple Pay at Walgreens would automatically trigger your Walgreens rewards card, once you set it up that way in Settings.

Apologies if this has since been subsequently answered but according to Apple:

At participating stores, you can receive or redeem rewards using Apple Pay. Just add your rewards card to Wallet and use it when you pay with Apple Pay. If you want your rewards card to appear automatically in a store, go to the card, tap Info icon, then turn on Automatic Selection.
After using your rewards card, Apple Pay switches to your default payment card to pay for the purchase. Depending on the store, you can apply your rewards card and payment card in one step, or you might need to wait until the terminal or cashier asks for payment.

So it is possible to use a reward card/payment card in one swoop but the retailer has to support it.

As I mentioned, somewhere, I already do use this functionality at Walgreens. It’s the best we have right now and I’m
Glad it exists. But it’s not really “one swipe”. It’s a swipe of the loyalty card + FaceID + swipe of the credit card + FaceID.

What I and others have been hoping for is true one-swipe functionality, where the rewards credit is automatically applied simply by using the credit card and FaceID once.

That’s a shame but at least you have access to such a feature.

I took it from Apple’s website you’d have been able to bring up the loyalty card, verify with Touch/Face ID and then it’d process the payment card straight after, that’s all.
