So if I want to issue an American Express card, how could I know if it is bank issued or independently issued?
Really want to try out Apple Pay but I don't have American Express yet.
PS: in Australia.

All cards got through AMEX website and independent of a bank.

One states American Express, the other one just has an American Express logo.

Um, so which one is it? I highly doubt the guy who posted the 1st quote is correct... I'm sure more places accept AMEX cards than you think.

If it's anything like the UK, not very many places accept it because it's never part of the standard packages for rental or use of a card terminal, it's always a very expensive extra - I'm sure the bigger chain shops offer it, but again if it's like the UK, so few people even have an American Express there is little interest in offering something the shop has to pay extra for.

Well that's definitely a bonus. Looking forward to hearing your results.

Went the Apple Store to pick up an iPad Pro and accessories. Used the watch to pay. Worked with over $100 (obviously). The manager said it was the first Pay all day.

Good to know you can purchase items over $100.

I would disagree. Pretty much all the chains accept American Express in the UK and even many small businesses accept it (they just don't display the logo as they prefer other cards). I can't remember the last time I had to use my MasterCard. Some of the merchant terminal providers now bundle on Amex with other cards as well (Worldpay and Barclaycard).

HSBC USA (and Canada) have tap enabled cards.

HSBC isn't exactly well-known in the US either. Plus they only seem to allow apps over the phone unless you already have other accounts with them (or in a branch? I don't know where there are even any here.)

I confirm this. 99% of my payments are made with AMEX in UK (London).

Success rate was 1 out of 3 today using AMEX Aeroplan Gold Card.

According to the Apple website you are able to reload your Starbucks' card using the Starbucks App. Nope - no option to use Apple Pay.

London Drugs - just worked! Said I was paying with Amex - figure on phone/tap - done.

BC Liquor store - fail. Machine beeped twice after tap and then asked me to swipe card - then asked me to insert card, and then asked for the pin number. Actually took a lot longer than normal because I didn't have my wallet ready. Not sure why it failed - probably because of the god-awful TD terminals used by the BC Liquor stores.

They are large world wide but small in US. Easy way for Canadians to get a full US savings, credit, debit and checking accounts.

Amex is not yet available for IN-APP Apple Pay payment, not even in UK. They are working on it.

Apple Pay is now available in Canada exclusively for American Express customers, allowing newer iPhone and Apple Watch owners to make contactless payments at stores like Indigo, McDonald's, Sport Chek, Tim Hortons and others that have NFC-equipped payment terminals and accept American Express.

Apple Pay should now be live in the Wallet app on iOS 9.1 for Canadian users. American Express cards can be scanned or added manually by tapping the "Add Credit or Debit Card" option.

American Express, an independent credit card issuer in Canada, is not nearly as popular or widely accepted as MasterCard or Visa credit cards in the country, and Apple notes that bank-issued American Express cards like those in partnership with Scotiabank are not accepted at launch.

Apple has reportedly been in talks with six large Canadian banks about launching Apple Pay north of the U.S. border, including the Royal Bank of Canada, TD Canada Trust, Scotiabank, Bank of Montreal, CIBC and National Bank of Canada, but negotiations have reportedly been dragging.

TD Canada Trust prematurely leaked an Apple Pay splash page last month, suggesting that Canadian banks may eventually support the mobile payments platform. High interchange fees and potential security issues have reportedly been sticking points in negotiations between Apple and banks.

Canada has been well prepared for Apple Pay, as many retailers and businesses across the country are equipped with NFC payment terminals required for contactless payments. The country was one of the earlier adopters of Chip-and-PIN debit and credit cards that can be tapped against a payment terminal when making a purchase, and Apple Pay is a natural extension of that functionality.

Canada's largest credit and debit card payment processor Moneris announced Apple Pay support for American Express cards earlier today.

Apple Pay launched in the U.S. in October 2014 and expanded to the U.K. last July, making Canada the third country with support for the service. Beyond Canada, Apple is also partnering with American Express to bring Apple Pay to four additional markets by the end of 2016.

Apple has confirmed with the Financial Post that Apple Pay will support American Express in Australia later this week, with AMEX customer service representatives suggesting a tentative November 19 launch date. Apple Pay will launch with American Express in Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong next year.

Update: Apple has published a list of Apple Pay participating retailers and apps on its Apple Pay page in Canada. Notable stores include Apple, Indigo, McDonald's, Petro Canada, Staples and Tim Hortons.

Nope. No intention to pay apple by using apple pay.

Amex is not yet available for IN-APP Apple Pay payment, not even in UK. They are working on it.

Then Apple.ca needs to update their website because it advertises the SB app to be used with Apply Pay. Since Amex in the only option, then it clearly won't work.

Those two pictured are credit cards.

In your country, the only charge card AMEX offers is the Platinum which carries a hefty annual fee. Other than that, the rest of them are for business owners.
Sad...
I need to wait for a while to try Apple Pay out.

Who the hell uses American Express in Canada? Why is Mastercard and Visa not compatible yet? Gee, I hoped for a better launch here.

Ever since Costco dropped Amex I've switched over to my Visa and MasterCard.

But I doubt Visa/MasterCard are in a rush to launch Apple Pay in Canada since they already have tap technology on their regular cards.
