  • Rogers Platinum MasterCard: 1.75% cashback, no fee if you are a customer or $39/year
  • MBNA Rewards World Elite MasterCard: 2% cashback, $89 annual fee, 1st year free and $100 for signing up
  • BMO Cashback World Elite MasterCard: 1.75% cashback, $120 annual fee, 1st year free
  • PC Financial World Elite MasterCard: 3% back at Loblaw/Shoppers/T&T/No Frills/Superstore, 1% everything else, with all the World Elite MasterCard benefits, NO ANNUAL FEE
  • Tangerine MasterCard: 2% back on categories of your choosing, 1% everything else, NO ANNUAL FEE
Something else to consider, Amex needs to up their cash back to at least 1.75% after the promo period to be in the game.

That is not a fair comparison. Each card has its +/-ve

Not only that but I used to have an Amex a few years ago and their customer service (atleast with me) was excellent, despite me having a basic card without an annual fee. This is just a bonus. Also those cards you listed, as macnewbie91 said are 'higher' end cards. I have:

  • BMO WorldElite - great card and benefits
  • Amex SimplyCash - no annual fee
  • ScotiaBank Momentum Infinite - I use it for gas and groceries as it gives 4% cashback on those
I've got all 3 types of cards and I use the Amex and WorldElite most often. It's a good card, at least for something without an annual fee.

Exactly, and if you have any type of problem with the merchant, AMEX will always take your side in a dispute or disagreement. AMEX will always charge back the item instantly, since they have the advantage of owning their own network inside and out, and will rarely ever let the merchant win the dispute.

A straight 1% back card is worthless... At least make it 1.5% back.

We keep this card because I've had it for a long time -- it boosts our average account age. We use other cards with better rewards for day-to-day purchases, and I only use this one occasionally for lunch to keep it active.

However, they did just offer me 2% cash-back for the remainder of 2015. So, we plan to use it more often for the next 6 weeks.

I'll second this comment. Amex charged back part of an annual subscription to an ISP and credited my account.

The ISP refused to honor an agreement to credit unused months when I cancelled (because they were acquired by a crappy company that actually knocked me off-line for a week). Amex didn't hesitate to do it, after the ISP couldn't produce a written no-refund agreement.

Restaurant tips & Pay

All but two Canadian restaurants I went to in May, when I visited for a few weeks, have contactless terminals; however, after paying successfully a few times, I stopped doing it because the terminals don't allow me to add tips. They only support it for cards inserted (EMV chip) or swiped (magnetic stripe). I ended up leaving some cash as tip.

What's your experience?

My wife and I both have MBNA Canada accounts and I just called them to leave my feedback. I'm giving them three months to implement Apple Pay or they lose our two accounts to American Express. AmEx is accepted at more places than people realize and just about every place that I normally shop.

Three months. That's all they get.

It's from Wells Fargo. And although I have multiple cards from that bank (debit/ATM, and a business credit card), it's the only one with an NFC symbol.

Actually, I hear Wells Fargo's getting rid of that functionality as well. Only AmEx has tap-enabled cards at this point.

Come on MC and VISA!

They have PayWave and FlashPay - no rush really to deploy Apple Pay.

The banks (and Visa and Mastercard) would be nuts not to get on board with this, because they're going to be losing money from people like me who now use their Amex strictly because it's the one that has Apple Pay.

You're not even a rounding error - Amex has such a small marketshare that it's of no concern for the Banks, Visa, or MasterCard.

Saying that, I'm sure the banks are working on Apple Pay - they're just in no rush to release it probably due to pricing issues with Apple.

So you've never been in a restaurant and been handed the bill in an American Express folder? You've never been in an Apple store? Bay?
Wal Mart? Canadian Tire? Tim Hortons?
;)
Never knew Tim's took AmEx. Apple Stores are on the mainland, here on Vancouver Island we make do with London Drugs or direct from Apple.ca. Walmart? Never go there. The Bay, only if I was absolutely made of money. Canadian Tire is a surprise as well.

Not that I'm going to run out and get an AmEx card though.

London Drugs accepts American Express.

This is the very common misconception about AmEx, that nobody accepts it; in reality almost every large company does, though they may not promote it because of the higher fees to the retailer.

As an Aussie I should be happy but having Apple Pay only on Amex is the same as not having it at all. No thanks.

Hopefully this move will but tremendous pressure on the greedy Canadian banks. ( I'm looking at you BMO) Once the banks realize that ppl now have a choice they will have to cave in
Or maybe apple should drop there slice of the pie and they are the greedy ones? Apple are taking money even though if something goes wrong it's all on the banks.

(from Canada) I cancelled my Costco amex card when costco left amex. Applying a new amex card is not good for my credit score, so I will wait for Apple to support visa/master.

So... I've got a corporate Amex that I found I could add to my iPad (I don't have an iPhone). I thought I heard it mentioned that this only works 'in app', but anyone know how this works 'in app', and with whom?

Apple's shown that they're willing to reduce their cut if needed (example: UK). Sounds more like the Canadian banks don't want to implement it at all, possibly so they can do their own thing instead.

Considering the very small amount of places that even allow American Express as an option, I can't see this working at all here.

Not until all the other banks are on board - then it'll go crazy. Almost everywhere you go they've got NFC capabilities.
But the fact is: visa and MasterCard is more popular around...uh, I think, around Australia. Well, why Apple doesn't add Visa and MasterCard as well this time, but for American Express only? I now only have MasterCard card. Ugh.

Because American Express owns their own network and makes a higher percentage of money from their partnered-merchants.

Visa and MasterCard own their own networks, but go through individual banks. There's no such thing as the "MasterCard Platinum," or the, "Visa Premier" by itself. In order for Apple Pay to work in Canada, the banks need to sign on to the plan, where as American Express doesn't need that permission.

Also, keep in mind, the few American Express cards that are issued by banks won't work with Apple Pay at this time.

So if I want to issue an American Express card, how could I know if it is bank issued or independently issued?
Really want to try out Apple Pay but I don't have American Express yet.
PS: in Australia.

They should just give everything away for free right?
