So Apple pay will only work with a handful of the largest banks in the nation? Suddenly it becomes useless to anyone using a slightly smaller, or regional, bank... Kinda pointless if BANKS have to opt in, too; it is bad enough that retailers have to opt in (if more understandable).

The rollout of Apple Pay is an exciting and dangerous time for Apple stockholders.

Both rewards and risk are great.

Here's hoping it goes more smoothly than the launch of iOS8!

I wonder if there will be a way in the future to identify the merchant (either by some token from the host NFC terminal or by GPS/location) and always use a specific card for that merchant regardless of the default card.

ie: all grocery purchases use card A, all fast food use card B, all gas use card C, general/uncategorized use default card.

What Apple should do is buy these NFC readers in huge quantities at a very good price and then offer them to small merchants for a nominal fee or even free. This would really get the ball rolling on Apple pay.
Edit: in Exchange for an Apple pay logo decal in every window.

awesome idea!!!

Apple is now into a new business: credit card readers. Now apple has to provide support to these merchants. they now need new department called Merchant Genius.

that is a best way to lose focus on their core business and their mission statement.

Companies grow and expand all the time.

Apple's core business used to be making Apple ][ computers.

Aren't you glad they moved on from that?

Apple is very much in the computer business. Personal computing and Mobile computing is still pretty much their core business and will remain so for the foreseeable future. :apple: Pay is a service that they provide to their customers. It is not a stand alone business. If it were apple would be rolling it on to the entire mobile industry through Android and Windows devices. NFC terminal integration for retailers will most likely be a part of a broader strategy to allow (either immediately or in the future) all NFC based payments to be compatible.

I wonder why only 8 cards is the limit? Why not unlimited? Or 25 or something higher?

Also, I wonder how smoothly the return process will go... do you need to scroll through and find your transaction to return an item? Or how exactly will that work?

How much stuff do you buy from the Apple store? It sounds like it displays only the relevant transactions to choose from. And this is the return process specifically for Apple stores.

"Apple's training materials note that its retail employee should emphasize the simplicity and security of Apple Pay to lure customers into using the service."

Richard, unless the training materials actually say that, a respectable journalist would refrain from using the word "lure." Is this some scheme or are we fish?

I've gone ahead and changed the wording, I understand that brings about some uneasiness in the context of the story. My apologies and thank you for your suggestion. :)

Oh I agree. I didn't mean Apple left the computer business. :)

The comment I replied to earlier basically said Apple would lose focus if they entered the mobile payments business.

That's poppycock.

The growth of :apple:Pay would always be limited by the devices apple sells. This is a reason why Apple really can't do a full blown Social networking website, or :apple: Pay like payment service that would look to establish itself as the leading payment service in the US or worldwide. Apple will most likely generate a lot of transactions through its iDevices, particularly as more retailers and banks are added and as more NFC enabled devices enter circulation. But beyond providing a service to its customers that makes their life easier, apple will most likely not focus on the "payments" aspect of the business and will continue to invest in things that it does brilliantly.

Anything has got to be smoother than the iOS 8 launch.

Fully agreed.

Again... I was responding to another comment that put Apple's abilities in question.

It worked for my bank chase bank....

Yeah totally, you threatening to leave totally got them on board with Apple Pay. You even scared them so much that they were one of the original 6 banks to be in participation of Apple Pay, before it was even publicly announced. All Chase Bank customers should thank you for your diligent service to ensure Apple Pay can replace their physical card.

Whatever you say.

You're on this website talking about Apple products just like the rest of us are.

Yep, and I'm not lying awake at night with anticipation to pay for something with my phone. Or drooling so I can shop at Walgreen's like some are in the other thread.

You're greatly exaggerating other people's posts. You obviously have a problem with their enthusiasm towards Apple Pay, so you're trying to make them seem irrational. Is it too much to ask for to just let people be happy?

They can be as happy as they like about it. I'm not exaggerating anyone's posts. I quoted one post in this thread.
