Plenty of good wholesome nihilistic entertainment for an entire dysfunctional family here: PTSD, drug addiction, and crime.

I'll get the popcorn. 🍿
Hey, if you want heartwarming feel good movies, check out Boys State, Banker, and Greyhound. They all will cheer you up and have what I consider happy endings. And then watch Ted Lasso to really get a happiness high.

There’s such a wide variety of content already on Apple TV+, will you still be saying the same thing five years from now when there are 500+ shows? Probably, it sounds like you’re quite determined. I’m sure you (and your family) can keep that streak going 🤣

Nice eWorld reference! Usually people go with Ping when they’re going back a decade or more to find an Apple loser 🙂
eWorld? Wasn’t that Apple doing web stuff when only 10% of the population even had a computer at home? And they had even a smaller market share?

I love the variety that apple is bringing to their service. If people have a problem with it not being family friendly, then monitor what your kids watch. That is a responsible part of parenting. Nice that there’s a little bit of something for everyone in their business model. Wait till five years from now.

Oh, I hope not. I'd love to have TV+ be worthwhile. And for me, that's gonna mean plenty of uplifting, decent "family friendly" content. But that's just not "sexy" to the media crowd, so color me skeptical.

Ping indeed!

Us Apple fans and followers never have to tire of all the options we have for mocking Apple's past failures. Easy pickin's, like Pippens off a low-hanging branch.

100% this. Apple is doing an amazing job hitting multiple target audiences. The pipeline ahead and second/third seasons for existing excellent shows is getting me very excited.

Yes. We do. And one of the ways we can do that is by not choosing to spend actual dollars on a service that has not much at all we'd want our kids to watch. We parents are smart and discerning that way.

Wait till five years from now.

Um, that's not a strategy that's remotely sane.
If it takes even half that long to offer content to compelling enough to attract the necessary audience to pay, Apple TV+ is going to go the way of Ping. (that reference was for you, PUP!:))

Apple ALREADY has insanely compelling shows in its first year. He meant - if this is emblematic of year one for Apple, it's going to be a very beautiful 5 years to enjoy.

... because Apple TV+ just screams family friendly....

Exhibit 1: The Morning Show, See, Servant, Defending Jacob.

The amount of bad language and adult themes on these shows puts to bed the whole “all TV+ shows are family friendly” argument.
It's such a contradiction to the app store though. Sure, you can get all kinds of graphic violence in the app store, but not other adult stuff. To be fair, to the US, violence is family friendly.

The likely made that back in less than 4 seconds.

The problem with that statement is simple: how do you account for "making it back?" If 4 million people sign up for Apple TV+ and watch the movie, are all those subscribers due to that movie?

When you add a title to a streaming service the contribution of that one title is pretty marginal. I'm not sure anyone subscribes for just one show, even on Disney+. You subscribe for the collection.

It would actually be sort of interesting to hear how that license price is accounted for. Is it a cost? Is it amortized? How do you even calculate and allocate the costs associated with a streaming service's content?

I thought what he meant is Apple will get that 40 Mil back in 4 seconds in hardware sells.

Exactly. I subscribe to the whole service and glad they continue to add quality movie to it.

Another bit of "art" nobody in my family will have any interest in watching with the "Apple TV+" that we still have for free and never use.

But go on, Apple, you swinging, savvy Hollywood moguls, as you build an entertainment empire of eWorld proportions.
If you want family friendly go to Netflix and Disney+. There is plenty of choices out there and not everything had to be family friendly.

Apple's plan is to qualify with the Academy and then premiere "Cherry" in early 2021 on Apple TV+.

What exactly does this article mean when it says “Apple’s plan is to qualify with the Academy?” Do they mean release it for a week in a few theatres at the end of December? I’m wondering how the theatrical release requirement could possibly be in place during the global pandemic.

True, but eventually one will fall and hit Newton and the rest will be history.

Seriously, it's interesting how a number of those failures were from being way ahead of the technology curve and so while the concept was sound the technology simply was not there to properly execute it; years later the concept is revived and is a success.

Someone’s not looking for change under the sofa haha, it really looks uphill for Apple TV+ though unless the Prime model is actually profitable, ie.: the streaming service as a companion to something else. I dont think anyone but maybe Disney is actually competing with Netflix atm...

Apple TV+, like the beats acquisition, was a multi billion dollar mistake IMO. Apple One would be much more appealing to a far larger audience had they included more iCloud storage than bundling ATV+. People who want streaming services have much better options already.

This is a great book. It’s VERY raw though. Certainly doesn’t fit with Apple’s family-friendly entertainment. Might be good for the catalog overall.

umm.... most of the content on Apple TV+ has not been family friendly. I actually don’t know why people thought this service would be filled with PG content?

Why is it that you never hear about a guy who joins the military, goes to fight a war, comes home, becomes successful, and lives happily ever after? I'd watch that.
I'm with you on that one; but it's a rather boring story. I'd prefer one that shows a veteran overcoming the challenges and presents a balanced, nuanced and realistic picture of the struggles; and not just paint every vet as some crazed psycho who is a ticking time bomb...

I’m very confused. Have you seen the masturbation scene in See? Heard the dialog in the Morning Show? Hell, the last episode of Ted Lasso mentioned a 6 year old girl and a vibrator in the same sentence. What is it about Apple TV+ that makes you think it’s limited to “family-friendly entertainment?”

Actually, it’s far more likely that movies are sold when they expect a minuscule box office but are very likely to win Oscars/awards. This way the streamer gets prestige and the filmmakers make a much better expected gross, beyond what the box office projected.

These awards movies regularly bring in 20 something million dollars, unlike the big summer movies or known brand genre movies (marvel, potter, star wars) which are 400M minimum.

great insight. I hate this trend though cause you either get Award Winning or utter trash. it’s still about the benjamins.

Beats a mistake? You’re joking right?

Not only has that acquisition paid for itself plus billions in profit—just on sales of Beats headphones alone—but it leapfrogged Apple into competition with Spotify.

Oh and gave them industry insiders like Dre and Iovine, though many like to trash both of those highly accomplished and valuable men.
