That's what happens when you have your own opinion. Apple is a trillion dollar company. It's not like they can't make a couple of pens with USB-C ports. This is just about profit, taking a cheap stylus that's still in stock and eliminating the elaborate charger in the iPad.
This is how Apple makes money. The customer doesn't play a role here - that's why customers should give Apple the finger.
If everything were ultimately drive by profits then Apple would make people with older iPads replace their Lighting Pencil 1 with the USB-C version instead of letting them use their existing Pencil 1. People don't even need the new adapter if they use an iPhone cable. The general consensus is that the plugging the pencil into the iPad sucks and was a dumb decision, but all of a sudden people are mad that it doesn't work with the iPad-10. LOL

So Apple did something to avoid claims of planned obsolescence and people are still complaining.

Requirements for charging/paring a Pencil 1 with an iPad 9th Gen.:
1x iPad
1x Apple Pencil 1

Requirements for charging/paring a Pencil 1 with an iPad 10th Gen.:
1x iPad
1x Cable (either USB-C to Lightning [1] or USB-C to USB-C [2])
1x Adapter (either Lightning female-female Adapter with [1] or USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter with [2])
1x Apple Pencil 1

Which is the stupid one?

Some of you seem to specialize in negative opinions about everything. Gee, Apple--a business--is about increasing their profits? You don't say! I love how people keep falling back on "they're a trillion dollar company", which is just another way of saying "they can afford to do [x, y, z]" They could afford to send you $100,000 each month too. But why would they just throw away profit like that? Just because they can "afford" to do something doesn't make it a wise business decision.

So, go ahead and "give them the finger". I bet these iPads sell just fine regardless of you and the rest of the outraged vocal minority "boycotting" them.

This is beyond pathetic. And at $9. Yet the lack of chargers save the “environment” while this dongle is perfectly cool? They disgust me sometimes.
I agree this is the dumbest design decision ever. That said, I'd imagine that it will effect a vanishingly small percentage of iPad 10 buyers.

  • I doubt most entry level iPad buyers even use or buy an apple pencil.
  • For those who buy a net new one, the adapter will be in the box.
  • For those who are upgrading, they may still have the original lightning to lightning adapter from the original box, and likely also have lightning cables still.
Really this really effects only people who have an old apple pencil flying around, bought an iPad 10, and have managed to lose the original adapter bit.

All I heard was complaints about the Pencil in iPad solution for charging so use a Lightning Cable and free included adapter.

iPhone Lightning Cable and free included adapter.

iPad USB-C cable and free included adapter (or one you bought if you already own a Pencil 1).

Would it have been better if there were a USB-C version of the Pencil 1, but then we would have to listen to people complaining abioyut how this was forcing peopler to upgrade their Pencils.

Apple should switch to a Wacom style pen that doesn’t require charging at all. It should also work across all their devices, including iPhones and Mac touchpads.

Huh? I’m no product manager, but how?

I was, in fact, a product manager before I retired. This type of discontinuity was fairly common. There's likely a USB-C compatible pencil in the works, but development on that was delayed. So the choice was either to make do with the pencil they had, or delay introducing the new iPad until the new pencil is ready; which likely would have been well into 2023. That's how.

By not supporting it, they force you to buy a new apple pencil when you upgrade your iPad. Companies and 'Brands' are not your friend. Apple are not your friend. They make easy to use devices, but they're a company whose sole objective is to take money from your pocket and put it into the pockets of their shareholders.

Whenever you see a post on MacRumors that starts with the phrases 'I don't understand why...', or 'Why don't they just...', The answer is always 'to get more of your money'.
Wouldn't it be a whole simpler for you to just keep screaming a blanket EVERYBODY IS OUT TO SCREW ME! and not bother trying to narrow down the details?

As far I can tell if the iPad 10 is Type-C then the adaptor that previously came with the Apple Pencil to plug into the wall outlet also now can plug into this new iPad directly as my Apple Pencil is charged via the type-C port of my Mac or charger.

When I purchase my Apple Pencil years ago, it came with an adaptor so one could charge it by plugin into a Type-C port like the wall charger or Type-A if using an old Type-A to Lightning cable.

Can you please explain what is incorrect about my original reply?

The new 10th-generation iPad features a USB-C port instead of Lightning, but the device remains compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil only, meaning that an adapter is now required to pair and charge the Apple Pencil with the iPad.

Apple-Pencil-iPad-Adapter.jpeg

The adapter is included in the box with the first-generation Apple Pencil, but for customers who already own an Apple Pencil, they must purchase the adapter separately for $9. While the new iPad is set to launch October 26, the adapter is already facing a 3-4 week shipping delay on Apple's online store in the U.S. for orders placed today.

The Apple Pencil plugs into one end of the adapter and a USB-C charging cable plugs into the other end of the adapter and the iPad. This setup looks quite humorous and led to the adapter becoming a meme on social media after the new iPad was announced.

Despite being redesigned with flat edges like other iPad models, the 10th-generation iPad is not compatible with the second-generation Apple Pencil, likely due to the device having a new landscape FaceTime camera occupying the area where the magnetic connector would normally be for charging the second-generation Apple Pencil.

Wow what a waste. Inspirational

It just convinces me that we actually do need Europe to step in and ban them from being stupid. Echoing in my mind was Steve’s old comment about a stylus on the iPhone. He’s rolling over with every dongle they put out.

Forget Europe. Customers just need to say no. That is the most effective way to drive change.

Customers still think Apple "just works" - no one ever told them that this was Apple under Steve Jobs' leadership, not Tim Cook's version of Apple. From the launch of the iPod to the release of the first iPad, we had a brilliant and great Apple.
It started to go wrong with the portless TouchBar Macs and the crappy butterfly keyboards. No customer expects to buy an Apple Pencil that can't be charged with the Apple iPad it was made for.

Up until this point all we heard was that the Pencil in the iPad was a dumb solution. Now that it's gone its the most amazing thing ever. LOL

I wonder how you tell the difference between first gen pencil and 2 gen pencil. I never had one.
First gen is completely round, and has a silver ring near the non-pointy end, with a cap that pops off the end to reveal a Lightning connector. The second gen doesn’t have the ring or cap, and has a flat on one side (like one of a traditional wooden pencil‘s six hexagonal flats, but with the rest of the pencil still round), which is used to attach it to the iPad Pro (and friends) via magnets (it also charges and pairs this way - the first gen uses the Lightning connector for both of those tasks).
