Angela Ahrendts has her share of defenders on this forum (it is still unknown what if any pull she has in determining product inventory for product launches) but the plan (or lack of one) for how the Pencil would be presented/secured clearly falls on her shoulders.
Yep. My guess is she doesn't decide when products launch or will be available in stores but it's her responsibility how they're displayed in store.

Sad that a child will choke on the pencil cap, forcing an Apple redesign. I'm surprised they did not foresee this. An astute lawyer at Apple would recall all pencils immediately and send them back out without the cap pending redesign.

The Pencil availability is a giant mess. Here in Germany, people are already paying €200-300 for it (nomally €109) on eBay because they aren't available...

Children can also choke on small Logitech wifi dongles, on Wacom nib replacements, on those new really small USB flash sticks, on Micro SD cards, etc. Children can choke on a lot of things. That's why you keep a lot of things away from small children. There will be no redesign.

The last Apple product launch that went perfectly smoothly was the iPod Cassette Shuffle in 1978. But even then, they ran out of socks.

The pencil is just sitting alongside the demo Pro units. Really not being monitored by the staff so I can see how one can just walk off with it, at my local store anyway.

On another note, where does Apple expect people to store these huge white instruments when they are unleashed to the public?

Get a pocket protector but don't look down as it's pretty long and you might poke your eye.

My guess for why the Pencil might be untethered is so you can see the weightedness of the Pencil. It's weighted so the Pencil doesn't roll off the desk, and always stops with "Pencil" facing upward. Stick one of those steel cables on the side and you wouldn't get to experience that. Seeing as how Apple has 200 billion dollars in cash, they can afford to lose 2 billion pencils.

Probably costs $5 to make that all plastic pencil in bulk so wasn't enough justification to tether it down. My local store also has it untethered in a white tray next to just a couple of the iPPs.

I just came from the Georgetown DC store and they had pencil out with no tether. For a brief second the thought came to my mind but I am honest. Not a smart move on apple's part though

Haha same by me. But was also afraid of the cameras ;-)

Yep- same here. Local store had a few Pencils on display, next to the very front window of the store! It's like they have them setup asking to be stolen. Just down a little further on another table were 5 or 6 keyboards also not secured to anything.

Sad that everything has to be tied down but that's just the way it is. It's funny how they have plenty of pencils and keyboards for store demos but none to buy.

So tempted to sprint in wearing a ski mask, grab the Pencil, plunk down $108 (because taxes) and sprint out of the store with the Pencil. But I haven't been working on my 400m speedwork lately so... probably not my best idea.

Well... That way, you won't be getting the charging adapter, so perhaps it's okay not to include the tax. :D

This is why the cap has a hole on the top, to allow air to pass through if it gets lodged in someone's throat.

The cap is not long enough to be a choking hazard like a pen cap but it has air holes anyway. Stop trolling.

You can't tether the pencil...that's why people steal them. Plus...I guess that's how they get their hands on it..and probably sell them on CL.

Let's all take a breath here and cut Apple some slack. They released an amazing product we've all been excited about for a couple of years now.

Nope - not an ounce because they're doing everything wrong here.

(1) This isn't an accessory like the Smart Cover - usage of the device is actually affected by not having the 'accessory' on sale. It feels like it's only half usable. Granted, not everyone will feel that way, especially if they don't plan on using the pencil but I gather a large number of Pro users DO feel this way.

(2) Lack of information. Fine, things happen in production. I get that. Give us some information Apple! "A production facility blew up and we had to get a new company to make them. They're making them now and should be available within a few weeks. Apologies for the delay - we'll make sure everyone who wants one has one before Christmas. By the way, here's a free month of Apple Music." Whatever it is, let us know WHY. We get it's embarrassing, but a lot more forgiveness would be given if there was some explanation. Also timing - Let us know exactly when and where they will be available so we don't have to do this constant checking.

(3) Lack of training for Retail. I feel very sorry for the Retail employees who are probably the most embarrassed because they're customer facing. They don't know what's going on or what to say. If you have a huge screw-up like this, then admit to it and train your staff on what to say. It seems like you get different answers from every employee (who, sometimes, know less than we do - that's not right).

I would understand if Apple made 1 Pencil for every iPads and they just sold out quicker than expected. But with the close to Zero stock on a product that you advertised for specific use with, I'm not giving Apple one iota of slack. With a company of Apple's size and resources, there should be SOMEthing better (again, understand production issues, but some PR that gives some real answers would be most welcome).
