I don't know why some people prefer Aluminum over glass backplate on current iPhone?

I've seen iPad (1 or 2) backplate get scratched like hell after some time of possession, even when put on soft case, much worse on hard case. It looks no better than shattered glass on iPhone 4/4s by then.

Yeah it may resist to crack/shattering from accidental drops, but Aluminum hardly crack, it yields, deforms or dents when you put impact on it.

And when it dents, you'd want to replace it anyway, no much better than current glass backplate. So yeah, what's the hate with glass? Unless iPhone go with user-replaceable backplate (which highly unlikely), doesn't matter what material they would use on it. You'll want it to be replaced when it scratched, shattered, deformed, dented, cracked. It'll has no different.

I still think Nokia had one of the best ideas many many years ago.

Replaceable clip on from and back (and wrap around the sides) user replaceable shells to the phone.

Inexpensive and you could customise it as you wanted, if you got it damaged, or scratched or just bored of it, but a new one and clip it on. New phone again.

Pit's something can't be done like this, instead of all these silly fragile designs we have these days.

Excited for a redesign. I would like an iPhone that won't shatter on both sides from an accidental drop.

Millions of people have managed to not break their phone.... why can't you?

IF you can't take care of your phone, maybe the iPhone isn't the phone for you.

I hope this is true. Mobile devices and breakable glass equal bad combination.
NO, that's not the problem. It's the people buying it that obviously can't take care of their phone..... don't blame their lack of responsibility on the iPhone.

I hope this isn't true cause it sounds ugly lol!

I'm Apple all the way but honestly as far as recent phones go with industrial design I think the Nokia Lumia 800 is a very nice minimal design hardware wise.

What if they keep the same design and make even fewer changes and call it the iPhone 4 S II? Do you think Samsung should sue them for using II?

I couldn't be more happy with the 4S. There's only one thing that would make me upgrade at this point. On-board storage at 128GB or higher. With how they're pushing iCloud and iTunes Match, this isn't that likely. Therefore I'll ride the 4S til my contract ends. No problem.

A matte, rubberized back would be functional in so many ways. Hides scratches. Keeps from slipping out of hand and off of dashboards. Provides some amount of shock protection. Not as heavy as glass back either.
iPhone is slippery and fragile - it is the least ergonomic phone. Galaxy at least has texturized back and Gorilla front glass.

That's right. When these phone manufacturers finally will figure out that all these "bumpers" and "skins" have to be build-in so the phone will be thin but protected? Embed at least low profile rubber spikes all the way around a phone.

My original iPhone never had a case, but my 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S do. If Apple circles back around to aluminum, I will not get a case for the iPhone 5. My 2008 MBP didn't have a case, nor my 2011 MBP and they're both fine. My first gen iPad was mostly out of a case (didn't like that Apple one after a short time) and my iPad 2 only has a smart cover. Both of those iPads are fine. I'd love to have an aluminum iPhone again without a case. Or even liquid metal which is radio transparent and versatile.

My thoughts: iPhone 5 liquid metal case with a quad-core A6/1GB ram and 4" screen with next-gen 4G LTE chips that won't drain the battery like crazy. Throw in some NFC chips and FaceTime HD over WIFI, regular FaceTime over 4G. Finally add on a 10mp camera and shave off 1mm of thickness while making it slightly wider and a tad heavier. I think that's the iPhone 5.

I also think they're working on some substantial UI overhauls for iOS 6.0. Things have become slightly cluttered. Unification of the interface and additional gesture implementation is likely IMO. The current UI isn't bad, but could use some improvement. Look at Microsoft right now with Metro. Never thought I'd say this, but I actually kind of like it and hope it pushes Apple to continue to "think different". Now I feel dirty. Shower time!

No sense in getting all worked up about it now. Who knows when the new iPhone will launch? Only the top folks at Apple. I don't even know why peolpe bother with all this speculation crap. Just enjoy your 4S.

with new tablets and lower prices i doubt apple can deliver even a jail broken device as solid in 2012, time to finally say GOOD BYE

I'm still a newbie in these parts, but....

Where's the liquidmetal back? I read Apple has a monopoly on its electronics use for consumers. The word is the stuff is super light, super strong, and nearly scratch proof. Anyone heard anything?

sold it to a friend, who used it for about 5-6 years

after that I had:

used and abused it for 6 years straight, drowned it in a creek, in a lake (multiple times), in beer, dropped it from a cliff 100 meters, thrown it against the wall, it still works flawlessly to this day (not using it anymore, of course, but kept as a backup).

It really needs an bigger screen... its a must must must must thing....

Yep, you`re right, those were great phones in it`s time, my cousin had both of them, while had Nokia 3330 those days. Still this two siemens phones were great! I really miss Siemens mobiles..

They better have something sooner than that.

The skyrocket is looking nicer and nicer.

All I ask for is a bigger screen....
