Ah yes, someone almost famous trying to teach people a lesson by tricking them. That always goes over well...

are they not going to add an option to pick the best frame you want? The whole camera app needs updating.

I agree. It feels/looks old and outdated right now. I can't really complain about the pictures (I've noticed the smoothing but it's not an intensity that bothers me) but the UI is just really ugly. They really need to add more options and settings to the app.

“Because otherwise, the XR offers almost everything you’d want in a 2018 phone...”

Once again MacRumors, making no mention of the lack of 3D Touch on the XR. Why, exactly?

You have to give it to Apple for trying. They noticed all the BasicB's and their huge Instagram libraries of pictures that look nothing like them. Great way to sell a camera.

Proof that people will and do complain about anything

People like to process their photos who are into Photography. They don't want it skin filtered out of the gate.

If it was an option in settings it would be fine.

I don't like the resolution but at least it sticks to 2x graphics so will look super straight out the box. The Xs plus runs 3x graphics and also looks great, though I have to say the deep blacks put lcd tech to shame.

People who are "into photography" will use a better camera. If they want to use an iPhone, they will use a better app (like Halide). If they want to "process their photos" they will not turn on Smart HDR. If they want to "process their photos" they will shoot in raw (again, using an app like Halide).

The skin isn't filtered. It's processed using HDR techniques which, in certain lighting conditions and depending on which frame has the "best" exposure, can wash out details. Which is what always can happen using HDR techniques.

It really is troubling that decisions like this are made. This isn't like a keyboard issue, they purposely made a decision to implement something like this. While it is 'just a photo' I think the principal behind these decisions are worst without disclosing to the public.

Talk about conspiracy nut-jobery. This wasn’t a decision made by anyone and is certainly not a “standard” (whatever that means). It is a byproduct of the smart HDR process that had the effect of smoothing surfaces (including people’s faces). Not enough people noticed it or didn’t raise enough alarm before release and once apple decided it was an issue they began to work on a solution (which takes time).

Um, but there aren't any Xr users at this point (it doesn't come out till Friday). And for the software change to go out with iOS 12.1, which is in its final testing before release, this came from feedback of Xs users. So, nice to see Apple being responsive to their users on this.
That's what I thought too but then I remembered that a slew of Xr reviews were just released this week so those might have helped push Apple in the right direction too.

So it wasn't even a filter. I would think picking the sharpest frame as the base frame would be the logical thing to do but that's without any testing or research which I'm sure Apple did.

Apple is know for touting their cameras. When they add a Vaseline filter to either side, as a standard, and the inability to turn it off, the camera you tout is completely worthless.
Except it's the selfie camera which mostly vain people use to control photos of themselves to look their best. Vain people also like vaseline on the lens so while this was not Apple's intent, it kind of worked out for everyone except for people that want to look older in selfies. I don't know many of those people.

BeautyGate scandal grew
Scandal?? SCANDAL?! It’s an unintentional smoothing effect on a selfie camera! As an entire society, can we please move away from calling crap like this a scandal? It’s histrionics at their worst, and an insult to actual scandals. And while we’re at it, I wouldn’t mind also seeing fewer “-gate” suffixes. I’m starting to suffer from a bloody gate-gate scandal.

"Gate" is certainly getting overused. Nice to see that they are being responsive, and fixing this. But given the millions of youthful people that seem to think they need skin-smoothing beauty filters anyway, I don't think it was really an issue. As an earlier poster joked, I think some people will want to stick with the older iOS.

Some people actually liked this, just because Apple made it that way... LOL!

But I guess those people know nothing about photography. Give us a file with no noise removal, and let us apply it ourselves
