Well for starters it would be nice to be able to turn auto HDR on or off in the app. Why would having granular controls in the app preclude point and shoot simplicity. This coexists peacefully on my S9+. I can choose pro settings or ignore them and hit the button and let the camera do all the work. Choices! They’re wonderful!

Wouldn't have a pro app be more choice? Right now we can't opt out of features that lag the camera or remove the annoying features. Meanwhile the pro people are upset that there aren't more features for more control. I am not saying that there aren't people who can use these extra features... but right now the average users experience is hurt so a select few can have some more complex options.

The only thing a camera needs to do is capture the scene as realistically as possible. It doesn’t need a UI. It needs a button.

This is a nice idea in theory, but if it were one in practice, Adobe's Creative Suite wouldn't be a thing.

It's kind of like why many pro photographers shoot in raw. From what I understand, the raw format preserves more data from the capture -- which gives them more room to do processing work.

Apple might have been a bit aggressive in pre-applying processing, but it's a trial-and-error process in a world where there's an Instagram filter that consistently rates better than others in terms of engagement and shares. I can't remember which one, but I think Mayfair maybe?

What lag? I use the camera just like you do most of the time. I point and shoot in full auto mode. Unless there’s been a specific problem or glitch from an operating system bug, I never notice any lag or inconvenience at those times on either the more complex Android app on my Samsung or the more simple iPhone app and equally simple Pixel camera app. Why would I need a separate pro app? I’m not following here. ??????

I don’t understand what’s throwing you off about the extra features that are easily ignored. The camera button is still huge and even my 89 year old mother-in-law who had a stroke can still take pictures on an iPhone. If that’s all you want the camera to do just push the button. It’s as big as can be. Can’t miss it.

Oh and I’m not necessarily asking for more features. I’m just wishing the user interface granted more direct access to toggles that already exist to control camera settings.

BeautyGate doesn’t bother me. My face needs all the help it can get. So while I’m fine with the folks who want some sort of toggle for it, I am not personally interested in it myself. I just think the camera app can be designed slightly better because I’ve used a more efficient one on Android.

What's ironic is that this kind of proves the opposite of what you want it to. It's a very vocal minority. So niche you pretty much have to go to a niche site (no offense MacRumors, but you're niche for sure) and use a search function to dig through to find people complaining about it.

I used macrumors as my example because he said “It didn’t even attract a full percentage of the MacRumors community.”

I wouldn’t call it niche. I’ve seen the issue on my twitter timeline as well. It’s also been covered on a majority of tech websites. Unless you mean all of the tech news is niche. It seemed to make a big enough of a splash for Apple to warrant a comment about it being fixed to a reviewer.

Flash is automated. Zoom is a basic gesture. Live photos is likely never turned off. Timer would make more sense if it was a 3D touch on the shutter. Filters and portrait mode should be post processing in the photos app. Video, slo-mo, and time lapse should be in a different app not the camera. Panoramic should be self sensing as multiple photos with overlap should trigger it. No need for a button.

I'm not saying people don't share photos. I am saying most photos taken are not shared.

We see this time and time again. What MacRumors cares about, and what the average user cares about don't always overlap. The number of times something is brought up here doesn't mean much for a feature like this.

You’re right about the overlap, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone complain about wanting the camera and video features split into 2 different apps.

A lot of the things you would rather have done and split into various different apps is just more of a hassle for an average user. It’s easier to ignore all of the features in an app if they’re offered, but it’s annoying to have to navigate different apps just to get one thing done because they’re not offered in the original app.

I know it doesn’t mean much if it’s brought up here but this isn’t the only place I’ve seen complaints. It’s not like Apple is making any changes/redesign soon. We’ll just wait and see what redesign iOS 13 brings.

My X has a nearly 1 to 1 and half second delay when I launch the camera. If the Camera is set to the wrong setting (say it's in slow-mo or "square" mode it can take up to five seconds to get it set correctly. That's the delay I am talking about.

I am not saying its hard to use. I am saying there is no way to launch directly into photo or video mode.

I hear what you are saying, but it's not easy to ignore things that annoy you. Maybe you right. Maybe a UI change would make me happier too... but as I have experienced the device so far I would rather it just work.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!

Have you turned off the "Preserve Settings" under camera settings? If you turn them all off, then it defaults to regular camera mode when you launch the app. I have them all off so that way it jumps straight into the regular camera mode, ready to shoot. I usually use the shortcut from the lockscreen.

And I guess I can see that way of thinking. It's hard to ignore the huge and ugly Volume UI that shows up and covers so much. Lol.

The smoothing doesn't drive me crazy, but a toggle would be nice.
And I feel the same way about the app. I love the settings you get in the S9 camera app, I'd love those options in the iOS Camera!

Lou was right. We should all thank him for making light of these issues. He was right about the charging issue. Proven valid via a fix from Apple. And now about the "beautygate" issue. Again validated by an actual fix (incoming). I'll say this about android users. They have no issues calling out google, samsung, lg, etc... whichever manufacturer phone they're using if there's an issue. I can't say that with iOS and Apple. Hell, i remember reading the initial thread about this particular issue. So many people saying it wasn't an issue while trying to validate the decision apple made with how they handle noise. Sad....

I don’t do photography. But from your use of jargon it sounds like you do. In that case I’d say more people are more like me and just want a picture before their cat moves, and is happy to apply a filter after, rather than someone who plans their shot and takes multiple to ensure they got it. For me, if I have to take more than one picture the camera failed because it was slow to process.

Yes and no. I like how quick the stock camera is. One 3D Touch and I'm shooting whatever fleeting moment I'm trying to capture and generally, I get the shot and the resulting picture is good. Even then, I don't want a 'touch to capture' camera like those on a Motorola phone because 9 times out of 10, I shoot a couple shots on full auto, then go back and shoot with Touch to Focus and adjust the exposure.

On the other hand, if I'm "going shooting," I do want to have manual controls available in an easy to use manner.

I bet the opposite. Most people don’t care. “Pros” care. I don’t care how good a phone camera is. If I pay for a professional photographer I expect a dedicated camera with all the razzmatazz that one expects to see with said person.

I care very much how good my phone camera is because it's the only camera I own. I've no need for a super zoom or a DSLR except for, well, super zooming.

I could care less what gear a 'professional' photographer shows up with. What matters to me is that they know what they're doing. If you show up with a 6S Plus strapped into a grip with an external mic and flood ring, that's just as fine as you showing up with a RED Weapon, or disposable with a home-made pinhole contraption duct taped to it, so long as you work speaks for itself. I also would have looked at your portfolio before hiring you, too.

Or Morgan Freeman. I really want to sound like Morgan Freeman. :| Hook me up, Apple?

Pfft, I want to sound like Samuel L. Jackson.
