If not wanting to spend more money for arbitrary things is considered wise for people, that’s fine, but complaining for something so trivial like a pricey case when one has already spent a relative large sum of money for the phone itself is hypocritical and unnecessary.

And fast food has benefits in convenience because it’s fast to consume for time conscious individuals. There is nothing gained in convenience in buying a $10 case on Amazon versus buying the $40 case from Apple.

Really I can take the difference in savings and purchase an expensive meal, buy multiple discounted meals, go to the gallery, invest and increase the value to cancel out that $10 I just spent, etc. Or I can hand over my hard earned cash to a billion dollar company for a case that is similar in material, manufacturing cost, etc. Sure there is choice, however at what point is the public going to call out a company for gouging the public and raising the price bar for all other competitors.

I don't know what the folks at Apple have been smoking, but they've definitely been smoking something if they think $40 for a clear case is reasonable.

You can get that on eBay for $2 with shipping, or if you want higher quality go for a Spigen case which runs you half the price and that's already quite expensive.
The Spigen clear cases I have seen for Xr have branding on them and are ugly with weird shapes molded in. I'd pay not to use them.

It's the same price they've been charging for years.

Is this the first time Apple has offered a clear case for an iPhone? o_O If so, it's about time. :)

First party accessories are always insanely expensive (IMO), so this isn't anything new. I don't think that this particular case and its price is an issue because there are many comparable alternatives for significantly lower prices.

Now iPad smart covers on the other hand... Starting with the iPad Air 1, Apple is the only one making smart covers.

This is kinda like the joke about the black box on airplanes. If its indestructible why not make the plane outta whatever it is made of.

If this case protects the phone so much better than what they're using, why don't they make the phone out of it? ;)
They did. It was unapologetically plastic and was only the 3rd best selling phone instead of the 2nd best selling phone behind the flagship that year.

Not true for the Silicone cases, every damn one cracks
I’ve been having that problem with most of mine lately.

When it comes to the silicone cases I have had better luck with Amazon knockoffs.

With the clear cases it’s luck of the draw. I’ve found some that are colored a faint gray actually show off the phones colors better than the ones that are supposed to be colorless. Instead the colorless ones inevitably make the phone look more washed out or discolored. “Smoke” or “grey” generally doesn’t.

I would disagree with that argument. I don’t think it’s as much an issue of price as it is the principle of the matter. I think that many people debate the prices of the iPhone itself and how it’s getting out of hand. But are willing to buy it, cause it’s arguably the best device of it’s kind. A case is a different story. It’s not proprietary at all. And it is totally understandable for people to balk at paying $40 for a piece of plastic that can easily be duplicated for less than $10. THAT is the point. And I think most people making that point could easily afford the $40. Again, they aren’t complaining, cause they could easily buy an equally good case for a fraction of that. It’s the principle of the thing. But Hey, if you wanna pay $40 for an Apple case...enjoy.

I buy Apple everything, cables, dongles, adapters, you name it. I would never use generic stuff with any of my Apple products. I like everything white and pristine. This way I ensure that if I run into any sort of incompatibility with anything it is Apple's fault, not that of a cheap cable.

And I honestly don't see the big deal with spending $50 on an Apple leather case even if it only costs them a few bucks to make.

I can understand that for some a case can be useful, but with a model that's practically
waterproof, maybe a little less so now. I like the feel of the bare Iphone in my hand, and so far, have
gotten away with just a stick on screen protector. Sticking such a beautifully designed device in a plastic case reminds me of when my grandmother covered the cushions of her couches and sitting chairs in heavy plastic wrap.

Wait, an Apple branded product that makes your iPhone slightly thicker??.... Sir Ive must be outraged

When has Apple ever priced their accessories to match 3rd parties? I’m sure Spigen and others are happy Apple doesn’t as that keeps them in business.

It's this reasoning that allows Apple to keep selling overpriced cases.

Apple's iPhone XR will go up for pre-order one week from today, and once the lower-cost smartphone is available customers will have the option of purchasing a see-through case sold by Apple. Spotted by Twitter user @ivanincanada and shared by 9to5Mac, iPhone XR press releases in countries like Canada mention "a clear case" priced at $55 CAD, or about $40 USD.

The iPhone XR will come in white, black, blue, coral, yellow, and (PRODUCT)RED, all made with glass bodies and matching anodized aluminum frames. Because of the colorful additions to Apple's iPhone lineup, a clear case makes sense, offering users the chance to show off which color option they've chosen while still protecting their iPhone XR.

Similar to Apple's other first-party cases, the clear case has the usual cutouts for the rear-facing camera, and protrusions for the volume rockers, silence toggle, and lock button. No images shared today show off the front of the case, but it appears that there is a gap in the bottom of the case -- like the company's silicone and leather case options -- allowing for access to the Lightning port and more comfortable swipe-up gestures, which are crucial for navigating iOS on the iPhone X, XS, and XR.

Apple announced the iPhone XR alongside the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max at an event in September. The latter two smartphones have already launched, and Apple has debuted a new line of silicone and leather cases for the devices, in as many as nine new colorways for each type of case. The iPhone XS and XS Max also have the folio case option, which protects the display of the device using a leather flap.

Those waiting to pre-order the iPhone XR can expect more case styles besides the clear case to debut on Apple.com, likely including these silicone and leather options. Apple is positioning the iPhone XR as the entry-level device in the 2018 iPhone lineup, pricing the device at $749 for the cheapest storage capacity. This means that the iPhone XR comes with a few trade-offs to get the price down (compared to the $999 iPhone XS and $1,099 iPhone XS Max), including an LCD display, aluminum frame, single lens camera, and "Haptic Touch" instead of 3D Touch.

$40 from Apple or $13 for the Spigen version on amazon that is probably better and won’t yellow.... let me think....

I save more than you because I don't buy a case, so I win.

So why are you posting in a thread about cases?
[doublepost=1539380243][/doublepost]
Did you take it back to them? To me, that’s the difference with buying Apple. They will stand buy their products and I expect more for the price.

That said, finding something cheaper is also a value without the headache of return if it wears.

We have choices. And competition is always good for us all.

Tried, no luck.

Apples cases are becoming boring. They need to start switching it up, create new designs/play with different materials. I normally always have an official Apple case, but this is the first year I have gone case-less with the XS Max. I would have a case, but I’ve not come across anything decent. Apples current colour line up is boringggg... I want to see a return of “Dark Olive” this to me was one of the best colours they had released!

I bought one at Walmart for $5 and it's held up great for two years. It's actually the best phone case I've bought so far. Albeit it's for a 5S, not some latest-greatest phone, but it even looks good. The prices people pay for nothing-special cases is laughable. Clear? It'll look like a terrarium after a few days. No thanks.

The job of a case is to protect, imagine people babying their Apple branded cases. I am living in the Twilight Zone.
Not sure if you’re disagreeing with me or whatever, but the Silicone Case cracks without dropping it

The construction of the case is poor and the sides crack just by using the case — it has nothing to do with it protecting the phone

Other cases don’t need to fall apart before they protect from a drop

We are on the same page and understanding. A case that cannot do it’s primary duty is a sad excuse and sounds like a manufacturers defect.

Reminds of this saying where an item looks good in a showcase and once it’s taken out and paid for it falls apart, with no practical use. Sounds like your experience aligns with saying.

How you become a $1T corporation: sell a 2 cent piece of plastic for 40 dollars... :p

Ah you forgot the price of wages, packaging, shipping and inventory. Missed the mark by .98 cents.

People that the warm and fuzzies that their paid more for something others have at a fraction of the cost for the same if not similar quality, and convenience themselves it’s better than the rest because there is an Apple logo on it.

I wonder if people have trouble with these types of clear cases. or film. weather you know their even there not... Until you start picking at the corners, and if they separate, then you know its a "cover"

So don’t look at the forums! Or avoid the internet altogether, if you have problems with differing opinions. In the case of this case people don’t even complain, they make fun of Apple. Usually you want an Apple product at all costs, because it offers something you can’t get anywhere else. They are really good at making premium computers, but they haven’t invented an all new kind of clear plastic none of the big chemical companies has heard of. There is no benefit to this being a first party case.

Perfect example of my point. Thank you

There are fanboys and there are iSheep. I am so so tired of the later.

Its _OK_ to say something is overpriced even if there are other options.
Its _OK_ to be critical of Apple's second to none company greed.
Its _NOT OK_ to just accept and excuse every single D4m thing they do.
