What discussion is there to be had? Apple has been charging $40 for their cases since forever. There are lots of cheaper 3rd party options in a variety of materials, colors, designs for people to choose from. What’s the problem?

$40 for something I can get at a dollar store for a buck?!? Apple really is brand raping their customers.
Who is forced to buy an Apple case?

I think Apple is not too overpriced if you are talking about a good leather case. A lot of the third party ones are expensive. Especially if they are the good leather that wears and breaks in and looks and feels great after it's broken in.

$40 for a clear plastic case though? Man, that's tough to swallow. Apple is free to sell what they want, though, and I'm free to buy something else if I don't like their offering.

Spigen is also overprice on as bad as Apple though. Their has good CS, however the case I had was not durable.

My Spigen thin fit case has been rock solid. It cost me $15 (just under that without tax, got it on sale). I have no major complaints.

I would have complaints if I paid $40.

I'd suggest people at least take a look at the "case liquid crystal" from Spigen for $15 before they shell out $40 for an apple version. If it looks bad a year later, you can get a second one for another $15, ride it out for another year, and still come out on top. By that time many people are replacing their phones anyway.

No, it's not silly. It's about the outrage of the people who love a company that lately is all about money.

"I want something but can't afford/justify it." Do you complain about the price of a Ferrari? One of those folks who has no real need for the power of a Mac Pro but complains about the pricing of a fully-spec'd one.

If it's more than you're willing to pay for a product, don't buy it. But complaining about the price because it's something you want but can't justify or afford is just a silly waste of time. There are a million products we all want but can't justify the price. This isn't something exclusive to Apple by any means.

Fair enough 2 cases for $30 is better value compared to this joke pricing.

I always here that completion is good for the consumer and that is great if prices drop. However over the years I have noticed that the completion is taking a page from Apple and raising prices for no other reason other than if people are willing to pay the Apple tax then their will pay our price too. Even when adjusting for inflation these prices are all narrowing the gap with Apple. In the end the customer is the looser and this is an instance where competition works against the consumer.

There is a similar oligopoly or colluding among the limited telecom companies in Canada where all the large players prices and plans are the same. The smaller players give you more however their service is restricted in priority when using the public funded infrastructure operated by the larger companies.

People need to wake up to this market manipulation. The only people who are in favour are the shareholders (I am an exception to the rule I guess).

Apple cases aren't cheap, but the quality is great. I have used the same Apple case for over a year and it looks brand new.

When I buy 3rd party, I end up buying 3 or 4 over a couple years.

The leather ones are fine, the silicone ones fall to bits after a few months. Starts at the open end where the corners wear then snap off. Leather fine, silicone overpriced rubbish. Can see them doing well with th clear cases vs spigen etc who cover the bottom and protect against smashing when dropped vs the open end of Apples cases.

I’ve long wondered why Apple hasn’t had a clear phone case. The iphone is so beautiful, it’s a shame to hide it.

Clear cas3s usually look so chintsy. I hope app,e does a great job with the materials and makes it super thin.

Awesome news. Thanks Apple for this. As much as I love their silicone cases, this is a great idea and makes a lot of sense for the XR. But truthfully, I think Apple should also make clear cases for the Xs and Xs Max as well.

Also, I would never opt for a cheapo $10 case from Amazon over Apple’s superior quality cases. I’ve been there and done that with past iPhones before and not only do Apple’s cases look and feel better, but they’ve always outlasted the cheap stuff in my experience. And for that, I gladly pay the premium. To each their own.

Just shut up and take my money already!

I always opt for clear cases to show some of the aesthetics of the phones back.

I travel a lot and prefer not to advertise free for Apple or become a target for theft.

Why no frosted cases?

Not true for the Silicone cases, every damn one cracks

The job of a case is to protect, imagine people babying their Apple branded cases. I am living in the Twilight Zone.

I’ve been using Apple’s leather cases for a long time. They are good for 2 years and good enough to protect the phone from a couple of nonviolent drops on concrete.

Silicone is ok but leather doesn’t cost much more.

Only $40? What a bargain. Does it come with the free yellowing feature after 4 months?

It’s more ridiculous for people to spend up to $1500 on a phone and then balk at a $40 case.

Similar to people who buy a German car but complain about the $2-3k navigation.

Not a fan of clear cases. Hopefully Apple will still make a leather case for the XR. 3 years of use and my leather case on my 6s still looks great. Definitely worth the cost considering how long it has lasted.

Wow a phone case. I wonder how many people got taken off computer development to come up with this important product. Way to go Apple.

Exactly. $1000 phone, and then complaining about a $40 case? Boo hoo!

When did Apple become competitors of CasteMates! I know TC trying to milk every dime and cent...but this is not unheard!

Ten years later and we’re still putting ~$800 phones in $20 cases. To me, that’s a design fail. Why are manufacturers screwing with glass casings when polycarbonate is a more durable and versatile material?

None, because developers obviously don't design cases. I really don't get why people make this of argument about companies, indicating their resources are being focused on a singular product when they obviously have multiple teams with different skills and focuses all working on various projects within the scope of their expertise.

As for the case, it's definitely overpriced as any Apple accessory is. My husband will probably end up getting them, since we want something that would show off that nice blue. Why get a phone with a specific color if you never see it? I just hope they figured out a way for the cases to not have the common problems of most of these kinds of cases: turning yellow and easily collecting dust and debris that scratch your device up.

I'll probably try to hold off on getting them until I can at least find some reviews or check someone else's out in person, though.

+1.

The design of the first few iphones were made for the human hand. Even the 4 series which were glass sandwiches didnt need a case due to the squared edges that makes it not too easy to slip out. Then the 6 came and is shaped like a slippery bar soap.
