NEWSFLASH - iPhone 15 will use a photon display displaying a gazillion colours, DNA touch ID, x-ray vision, holographic projector and of course a 12MP camera with 25 lenses.

Do these "analyst" guys just sit there making this stuff up?

The major difference between "our" guesses and theirs is that they get paid very well for their guesses. Ridicule them all we want, but they are making money for something that we do for free.

Why Apple come so late to the OLED technology?

They were investing in an alternative technology (to OLED) years ago... A definitive failure?

No body has told this story yet...

It is a shame how old iPhones look compared to Samsung hardware...

The iPhone 8 at more than $1,000 for a piece of hardware similar (but one year later) than the Galaxy 8 is ridiculous.
So what if the phones look old. not everything that looks old is bad you know. Perhaps you are one of those who must show off the latest bling? I don't know but I do know that the iPhone works very well and that is all I want.

As for OLED... Like many things Apple do, they don't leap in and release to meet the latest shiny-shiny. Their LCD's are rated the best in the business. Is there any reason not to assume that Apple have made some tweaks to the standard OLED to make it better in some way? All I know is that when it is released all your questions will be answered. Once people dissect the devices we'll know about this and the issue with Imagination GPU etc etc etc

The alternative technology is MicroLED. it will come to the apple watch, followed by the touch bar MBP, and than comes the iPhone.

Nobody knows if its even going to be $1000.

And how is it not better than the s8?
It isn't "similar hardware".
Its going to be faster, have AR capabilities the s8 can only dream of, and its going to be the first phone with a color managed OLED display, and if apple has their way, Touch ID on the front of the device.
The only thing going for the s8 for me anyway, is the design and display..

I'm still not sold on OLED displays due to burn-in issues. The fact that Samsung, who has been using OLED displays for several years now, still has to do things like slightly move around UI features to avoid burn-in tells me that OLED durability, though improved, is still far too low. There's no way that Apple has somehow sourced superior displays from what Samsung is using, so I'll be sitting this year out to see what kind of display issues there are, if any.

Hopefully one of them is an iPhone SE-sized model with a ~5" screen. If the screen is edge-to-edge so that it covers the entire front of the device, this should be possible.

the good option would be a refresh of the iphone SE.

the boring option would be the iphone 8 being the lower tier, and the 9/9+ being the new ones.

The bad option would be Apple trying to go with an 'iphone pro' and having an even more expensive tier following the iphone 8..

Apple has took LCD as far as it can take it.Now it's Right time to switch to OLED.its matured enough.
The problem for Apple has never been waiting for OLED to mature.
It's finding a supplier that can produce the huge, enormous, gigantic amount of panels it needs to satisfy demand.

If they are adding a 3rd iPhone with OLED screen and all the features this year it makes sense to keep making 3 iPhones next year and so on. I'm guessing it will be the premium model that get's OLED this year and all the new features and then next year the OLED will be added to the other models along with other features.

I would assume they will release a special 10th anniversary phone this year, that being the iPhone 8, and next year will serve as a "reset" of sorts, with three different size iPhone's of similar specs.

To be honest since they're talking here of 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch screens for next year and the "iPhone 8" supposedly has a 5.8-inch screen that sits in the middle of the two it might be true. 5.28-inch for those who like the smaller form factor like an iPhoneSE and then going up for those who have bigger hands and want a bigger screen.

LOL at Apple "working on facial recognition technology" to replace Touch ID for the new model. This phone is going to be shown off in a handful of months. The solution would be far past testing stage by now.

On a side note, I don't buy for a second they are dropping Touch ID. There is no way that face rec technology is as good as or better then a finger print reader in all lighting conditions. The technology is just not there.

I think it makes sense. This year 7s 7s+ and iPhone 8 with OLED and only one screen size.
Next year they could sell all bezel free models, one with the size of the SE, one similar to the 7 and the "pro" model similar to iPhone 7 plus, but bezel free so with >6'' display
This would actually make a ton of sense in a 3 phone scenario. Small, medium, and large.

Agreed. What Happens when People don't shave for a few days? Or women with long hair have a different hair style, that covers part of the face for one day? When you have the phone in your bicycle mount, when you have sunglasses on.. different brands/styles of sunglasses... I often need to use my phone when wearing a Motorcycle Helmet. Too many variables, and people are not going to train the phone for every circumstance. In my guess, I reckon most people only train 2-3 finger prints right now.

Seriously guys? Do you still believe Apple will respond your question one day?

lmao!

This lines up well with the LG AMOLED factory being dedicated to Apple devices. It should be in full production in time for next year's models and Apple would be smart to have a consistent design across all its devices. You'll have full-screen models in the same sizes as the current 7+, 7, and SE and iOS will work identically across the whole line.

Personally I'm going to wait another year before upgrading. First to let Apple work the kinks out of a full-screen display and interface and secondly to see what the larger screen device looks like. I've gotten used to my 6+ and I think I would prefer a 5.8" active screen area to the iPhone 8's expected 5.1".

...so the iPhone “Pro” or “X” will have LED in 2017 and the rest of the lineup will follow suit in 2018.

One doesn’t need industry insider supply chain sources to deduce that....

Of course they don’t, but as journalists, they’re obliged to ask.

That you know of, unless you work for Apple you can't say for sure what they have been working on for the past few years, for all we know they could of been working on facial recognition since Touch ID was first released. I'm willing to wait and see what Apple announce when they get up on stage and talk about it.

What about the report a while ago that Apple would adopt OLED for just this year and then introduce mLED?

Seriously, nobody cares.

Apple generally employs new technology when it is ready for prime-time, reliable, and available in the quantities (and price) that Apple requires.

Did it hurt them? Nope. Were the iPhone 6 and 7 great without it. Yup. As always, coming "late" isn't a negative if your entrance is with the most entrancing woman. And I expect the iPhone 8 to be hubba, hubba, "total package" great.

This, Apple tends to enter late because the technology has matured and they have seen where they can use it. I'm betting they have solved the burn in on OLED screens otherwise they wouldn't be using them.

The iPhone 8 is going to be a great device, expensive but great (in my opinion).
