My Prediction:

This year we will see iPhone X along with iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S+

Next year we will see a smaller iPhone X to replace the SE; a continued iPhone X; and a larger iPhone X+

Ideally these three X updates would be coming this year, but Apple is operating at a slower pace currently than it has historically. Plus supply constraints will mean that it will have to begin manufacture of these screens real early on in 2018 in order to have enough units for release.

Unless iPhone X blows me away this year, I will likely keep my iPhone 7+ and hold off until the X+. I like the size of my phone and do not wish to downsize - even if the screen is technically the same size.

And since I am analyzing Apple at this moment, that technically makes me an ANALYST :D
Also - I am referring to the OLED models as iPh X, since I really have no clue how they will market this new generation. The iPhone XSE ?!

I honestly don't know either way. In any event, there is anecdotally strong demand for a device with an iPhone SE footprint and an "edge-to-edge" screen, going by the "likes" to my first post in this thread as well as the number of similar comments I see from others.

For sure it is a popular request. I guess what I'm just wondering is if some of those people requesting it are people who do care about one-handed use but don't realize a bigger screen even on the same size device will make that more difficult. I'm sure a lot don't care though.

I have a similar view, although I think next year's new models will be the iPhone 8S (XS if you prefer) and the 8S+ (XS+) alongside that new SE model.

The standard 8/X would drop down a tier and they may retain the 7S+ as a second tier priced large phone option.

I too would love this. When I travel I still often pop the sim out of my 7 and into my 5S so that I can have a smaller phone and less device to deal with. It is nice to have the smaller size on daily use as well, as often I simply tether to it with my iPad Pro when I need a bigger screen.

But, to each their own, my use case appears to be in the minority

I can't find any breakdown of sales per iphone model but there are a few articles indicating that the SE met or exceeded Apple's expectations. I'm sure a bezel-less SE would be at least as good, especially if they kept the price reasonable. I love my SE, though I've never had a larger phone as a comparison.

The major difference between "our" guesses and theirs is that they get paid very well for their guesses. Ridicule them all we want, but they are making money for something that we do for free.
Kind of like meteorologists, no?

But it makes sense for apple to advance the state of the art. iphones 5s and 6 layed some solid groundwork. iphones 6s and 7 pushed the envelope. Now it's time for the next iphone to again lay some solid groundwork.

I wish Apple continues to keep 4.7 inch size (external dimensions) phone as so many millions are used to that size..

Earlier this year, a supply chain report said that Apple plans to make all of its iPhones with an OLED screen by 2019. Apple was believed to be preparing to adopt OLED panels for 60 million units of the "iPhone 8" in 2017, and then the company would double the adoption of OLED panels in 2018 before wholly transitioning to OLED-only iPhones in 2019.

In a report by Nikkei today, that timeline has been bumped up slightly based on two industry sources, who said that Apple is planning to use OLED displays "in all new iPhone models launched from the second half of 2018."

Not only that, but one source said that Apple is "tentatively" looking to debut three iPhone models next year, and all would use an OLED display. That would be in contrast to the trio of iPhones coming in 2017, two of which are expected to still use LCD screens and one of whiclh will be the first iPhone to transition to OLED, the so-called iPhone 8.
Rumors about the "iPhone 9" started in May of this year, when a report predicted Apple would debut the 2018 iPhone in two OLED screen sizes: 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch. The supply chain is also believed to be starting to eye production of the iPhone 9, with LG Innotek planning to begin production of flexible printed circuit boards in 2018 in hopes of becoming a main FPCB manufacturer of Apple's 2018 iPhone.

In today's report, Apple is said to have already begun designing the new iPhones coming in 2018, "but its plans are subject to change," as usual depending on various market factors and component quality discovered through the production process.

The sources also cited concern over Apple's shifting to OLED-only models as soon as 2018, considering that only one company -- Samsung -- is a reliable source of manufacturing for the technology. Apple is already said to be looking into diversifying its OLED display orders, however, including potentially investing in a major LG Display OLED plant with production estimated to begin in early 2019.

Samsung will be the sole supplier of OLED displays for the premium iPhone 8 in 2017, but Nikkei's sources didn't know how much that might change in 2018. With suppliers like LG Display still not predicted to gear up on OLED production until 2019, Samsung is likely to remain at least a major OLED source for Apple in 2018.
Suppliers JDI and Sharp will continue to supply LCD screens for iPhones like this year's "iPhone 7s" and "iPhone 7s Plus," which are expected to be sold well into 2019, "although demand could fall with the arrival of OLED iPhones." One Sharp executive speaking to Nikkei contrasted the site's first two sources, saying it's "not likely" that Apple will switch to OLED screens for every new iPhone launching next year.

A 5.8-inch OLED display has long been a rumor for the 2017 iPhone 8, and it's also expected to be a screen with an edge-to-edge design thanks to drastically reduced bezels. Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted Apple will omit Touch ID from the iPhone 8, and then a report by Bloomberg said Apple is working on an "improved" facial recognition system to replace Touch ID in the tenth-anniversary iPhone.

The same was said last year and it wasn't true.

Does your understanding not involve a camera, or light? Because if it does, skin tone and lighting conditions matter.
Actually, it does, but it is the facial features that, at least in my understanding (while I concede that I am not an expert), are the key factor in facial recognition.

I
Seriously, nobody cares.

Apple generally employs new technology when it is ready for prime-time, reliable, and available in the quantities (and price) that Apple requires.

It's not new technology by a long margin.. they were just stubborn hanging onto LCD as they are cheaper to produce..

I agree that overall OLED has more upside, but burn-in is a real sticking point for me. I just don't think you should have to be "aware" of how you use your phone display. Again, I've seen an OLED display basically destroyed by burn-in within a year's time, so I'm wary about buying a phone that has an OLED display.

I'm willing to take your word for it though, so hopefully my concerns prove to be wrong!
I have 2 oled devices, both 2 years old. Not the slightest sign of any burn in. Id have no worries abiut gwtting another..

Why is a phone less than 2 years old needing a new battery?
its got right around 650 charge cycles on it if I had to guess; i regularly go through a full charge in a day and have for the life of the phone. The battery now drains faster than it ever has. I can't get through the day without charging here and there. I think right now I can go from full to dead in about 3.5-4 hours with only texts, emails, reading news articles, and the occasional short video.

Based on Apple's own statistics, using my estimated charge cycles, I am well below 80% battery life.

I don't believe skin tone makes a difference. Good facial recognition software measures distances between facial features (eays, cheek, lips, ears, etc.) Now, I have no idea if this is what Apple will employ (afaik Samsung does NOT), but anyway, THAT is the better way to handle it.
