I would be surprised if the United States has any capability manufacturing any kind of consumer electronics, much less sophisticated ones with components sourced in Asia.

More likely these big factories will be manufacturing silicone cases, data cables, and screen protectors.

I can see workers checking Facebook and posting selfies to Instagram on the American assembly line. 'Look at me bishes, makin' u nu iPhone 10s. Yeah dats me baby, baby. Tina meet me outside the factory in 2 hours."

They purposely pick the most unflattering image, every single time #MSM
And please don't lecture me that wsj leans right, as each day's headline is a negative Trump story

Show me a flattering image of Donald Trump from the past 25 years.

You can't. Because it doesn't exist.

It's also hard to report positive news when there is none. The Wall Street Journal is owned by NewsCorp FFS.

I look forward to the day when I can enjoy my mac news without any mention of the T-word.

I know. Tim is the worst.

(Kidding. Tim is... eh. He's not the worst, but he's not particularly good... although I own some AAPL so I guess I must have some amount of confidence in Apple under his reign.)

If I asked you who said this:
"I spoke to [Mr. Cook], he's promised me three big plants--big, big, big,"

What is the most likely response:
A. A 4 year old telling mommy what was said to grandma's gardening loving neighbor

B. A pot head telling his buddies what his other buddy said he was going to get from another buddy who was not his buddy but the buddy of someone else who was buddies with his buddies.o_O

C. A rock with moss on it.

D. The actual president of the United States of America. SAD

Apple has been investigating manufacturing in the United States since Trump said "we're going to get Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country instead of other countries," during a campaign speech at Virginia's Liberty University in 2016. At the time, Trump threatened to introduce a 45 percent tax on products imported from China.
Is this the actual timeline of the events?

Agh, you beat me to it! :D;)

Maybe orange trees would be appropriate?

In all seriousness it might be a good way for Apple to bring back some of that money held overseas without so much going in tax. I don't know how I feel about that in principle, but I guess if it meant more jobs and good redevelopment of land that needed it then it'd be doing (some of) the kind of things tax should be doing anyway. Better than the money just sitting doing nothing.

Bold: To where and why.
This really confuses me and sometimes 'angers' me.

Apple is a global company, most of their profits are made outside of the US, so why bring it BACK.

Terrific news. Jobs for Americans instead of more outsourcing. This is absolutely a win, I can't wait to see Apple's official announcement down the line.

Hard to spin this negatively (of course, plenty of folks here have). I hope that new manufacturing in the US becomes a trend instead of the exception.

The reality was more likely that Cook said Apple was going to build three plants and Trump added his usual "big" and "beautiful" superlatives.
Apple products are high volume sellers, so a plant associated with them likely would be fairly sizeable.

Apple may truly be building stuff in the US, but when I read the words "... he's promised me three big plants--big, big, big" ... it just sounds like Trump putting words into Tim Cook's mouth. Cook doesn't generally doesn't speak that way.

Whenever I here exaggerated words like "he's promised me .... big, big, big," or "it's going to be terrific!", it just sounds too much like politician-speak. I wouldn't put much weight to it.

I'd sooner wait and read the official statement from Apple.
