I'm sure somewhere right now Tim Cook is standing with a thousand yard stare saying "That's... not what I said to him."
Tim Cook wants tax reform. Apple has $200 billion overseas that it can't bring back without incurring a huge tax bill. It would not surprise me at all if he is willing to commit to building some manufacturing capacity (or supporting suppliers doing the same) if it builds support for tax reform on both sides of the aisle.

Terrific news. Jobs for Americans instead of more outsourcing. This is absolutely a win, I can't wait to see Apple's official announcement down the line.
Honestly, what do you think the chances are that Cook said anything even remotely close to that claim?

Hard to spin this negatively (of course, plenty of folks here have). I hope that new manufacturing in the US becomes a trend instead of the exception.
Jobs in this country. No not negative. The high likelihood that Trump is lying about that conversation and Cook's response... you know what, that can't even be negative either. We have accepted that, as Kellyanne put it, he doesn't think he's lying when he says what he says.

But that wasn’t an Apple plant. Apple doesn’t own manufacturing plants.
This is what I'm wondering about. Cook was probably talking about the proposed Foxconn plant(s), which will most likely be dedicated to building parts for Apple devices, but it's not technically an Apple plant.

I'm sure that Cook has alluded to bringing some manufacturing back to the US, but Trump is well-known for taking something he's heard and embellishing it to an insane degree.

this was the essence of the corporate 'tax holiday' or tax repatriation (2004)... Corporations can repatriate monies oversea at a low tax rate only if the money is used for U.S. projects (ie. building stuff or R&D that employ people in the U.S.).

Unfortunately, corporations used the money to repair their balance sheets instead of repairing their infrastructure. :(

I have a feeling the conversation went somewhat differently than that.

Not saying that Apple isn't working with Foxconn or Pegatron or even an OLED display manufacturer who is considering opening up in the US, but still...

These factories are not going to look anything like the Chinese versions. They're going to be highly, highly automated.

Agh, you beat me to it! :D;)

Maybe orange trees would be appropriate?

In all seriousness it might be a good way for Apple to bring back some of that money held overseas without so much going in tax.

I wish people would stop saying "bring back"... most of that money never originated in the West. It does not belong to the US, just to Apple overseas.

I was going to post something about how we should all remember that Trump talks out of his arse, but then it's also quite obvious Cook was ********ting when he said building in China is about skills rather than costs.

Instead of reform so that every company can be competitive we are going to keep handing billion dollar corporations money? I hope not. I hope Apple is doing this for love and no money is going to them.

You spoiled it!

Three APPLE plants!

But they're not big. ;)

Smart move by apple, in fact not a day too soon. I've always found apple's reliance on China to be worrisome, especially now with the NK 'problem'.

As are all politicians. But I don't doubt that Apple would find a way to build a plant here for political purposes. Heck, they assemble the current Mac Pro here, and that is most likely for political reasons.
