Because that worked out so well for Windows 8.

Stupid idea. Desktop programs are designed for the efficiency and accuracy of a keyboard and a mouse. iOS apps are designed to be simple so that they work with fingers and touch.

They, mobile and OS X, will have different UIs. Won’t be an issue.

Imagine having 1password for iPad, iOS and Mac OS in one app download ( although some stuff will be stripped out as applicable to the platform )
[doublepost=1513837767][/doublepost]It’s more of a case that development of Mac OS has been largely stagnant for years now. Apple have even making needless changes and dumbing down some apps for no good reason ( disk aid comes to mind )

I think it is happening already, considering decade old Finder UI bugs that are still not resolved, and Mac users having to dig into Terminal to view system logs because the Console application has been crippled since Sierra. It appears that Mac OS engineering at Apple has been taken over by a bunch of Linuxheads who don't give a damn about fixing UI issues, because they think that everybody should do everything in the command line.

I’ve been saying this for years. The universal OS. An app would run on all hardware, showing features that would work on that hardware. Move to more sophisticated hardware, and more features would be there.

Sounds great BUT it’ll ballon the cost of mobile focused applications intended for iPhone or iPad vs MacOS

I'm hoping this means things like the full version of Office can finally end up on the iPad.

No real reason for it not to now except for supporting complex add-ins.

I think the key is just Swift 5 will be the o my code in XCode update will allo one app to be coded for all BUT specifics have to be within by the coder which features go to what device. Mac App Store gets unified with App Store. Really see no major difference vs what is happening now.

Can’t truly make one OS for every device as needs of every device and its use cases and battery life and UI completely differ.

I’ll have what everyone on the first 5 pages is smoking please (I know it’s Green) ;)

The bolded is the first thing that came to mind. Memory usage on my Mac has been taxed since El Cap and I have an iMac not a MacBook. I can see that as a must for laptops to conserve battery life, but not a desktop. I suppose I would be a bit more patient with this if their software teams were not dropping the ball so much.

If they switched to ARM, I think they could eventually go ARM with an Intel co-processor (pro models only). ARM runs the OS and simple apps, and Intel runs specific applications that require more power. That could actually increase performance in some workloads, as the Intel chip can be dedicated to a specific task.

Get ready for pop up ads, banners and other intrusive garbage to annoy and distract. The last couple of iOS updates brought iAd changes that I hate already, even apps I paid for now have ads - even Apple's App Store has a daily ad.... Very disappointed in Apple lately, I am sorry to say. The last thing I need is this sort of behavior bleeding onto my Mac.
That being said, it would be nice to have a decent fart app that I can use on all of my devices and Macs.:p

iAds isn’t to blame for your paid apps having ads—blame the developer, they’re putting the ads in. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Apple.

So you don’t have to be disappointed in Apple anymore, hurray!!

Ads appear only because the developer puts them in.

Yet having XCode allow a programmer to create and package one app for two platforms doesn't negate the same work they already do for Mac OS. All that's proposed in this Bloomberg article is write out all the code and click a few buttons for distribution to include both platforms. The stagnation isn't inherently fixed.

Innovation in MacOS has been a concern for a bit since refinement has taken precedence save for APFS.

Yes , this unified app packaging won’t stop stagnation of Mac OS - that’s a separate issue that is down to Apple alone. They need to be more innovative.

I'm assuming that the next version of MacOS will also see the iOS equivalent of Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Pages, Garageband etc. built in this way too - i.e. 'eating your own dogfood'.

I'd be willing to bet that the above will be a major part of the WWDC keynote in 2018.

I'm also going to guess that they'll keep some MacOS only 'Prokits' for the moment i.e. for pro applications that have such advanced compute requirements that there would be no way that they could ever feasibly appear on iOS in the near future.

This would also to stave off the accusations of dumbing MacOS down.

So my assumption is that this is aimed at those iOS developers that would like to develop for MacOS but can't justify the effort vs. reward equation.

And finally, it's not going to be a bad thing, if with a fairly minimal effort, we can have many apps from the largest software library in the world (i.e. iOS) on MacOS, too.

This would mean that we will finally get ARM macOS with an A14 MacBook Pro

You mean a RISC based macOS ... which we've had long ago prior to Snow Leopard.
Arm based chips are based on RISC ... while Intel & AMD are based on CISC. Apple is heavily prepared for switching their desktop OS between each. Sure there are more specifics and I'm heavily generalizing but I think my understanding of this is good, maybe?

With all the talk of ARM coming to the Mac, and the ARM based coprocessor coming in the iMac Pro, I wonder if whenever the upcoming modular Mac Pro comes out it will have an option to include the most powerful ARM based processor if dual socketed, or in another modual all together. This in addition to a xeon chip. Wouldn't surprise me to see apple test the waters with it.
