Agreed, but Apple was doing lots of advertising "Get Iphone 16 Pro for Apple Intelligence". You can't let the marketing department do this, then not deliver. I worked in software for part of my career, so I know things can happen. But Apple can't let their Marketing department over promise.

Develop it, then advertise it, AFTER you know you actually got it...
I think perhaps management and marketing are more the issue here than the software team not delivering.
Wasnt the original iPhone a bit of smoke and mirrors when the demo was done?

And this year, they learnt their lesson: under promise. :)

I'm still amazed at how large companies with huge wealth and experience take to deliver software and hardware.
At least they seem to have better hardware updates mostly these days. No more "same price for four years" devices.

Phones are pretty much peak phone anyway. After 16 iterations there really isnt much you can do or add that is revolutionary. Something new will come along eventually. AVP is a worthwhile tangent product that will evolve and the impact it is making will flow through to other products.

I'll take the "over" on Spring 2026

but that's functions not working... not getting worse...

did it ever work? and no isnt?
Yes, these functions all used to work well. I can trace back to iOS 16 when the issues began, and gradually worsened with each major update. I have submitted numerous feedback items to Apple over the years, and posted across boards here about the issues getting worse over time. It's sad how much regression has happened with Siri in Apple's device ecosystem.

need specifics... if you've reported them then you might be able to share those messages with us to see if others see the same degradation or not

If you don't see Siri is getting dumber every year, I don't think any "specifics" will convince you.
Like literally the only thing I'm still using it is "start a 20 minute timer" to remind me to add fabric softener to my laundry.

Just yesterday I had an incredibly annoying 3 min "fight" w/ Siri to try to get it to start a playlist from my locally onboard my iPhone music library.

It kept trying to find playlists online in YouTube Music despite my best efforts in wording/phrasing.

This was all while I was running --- so to say I was incensed is an understatement.

I ended up having to stop and pull my phone out of my Camelbak and do it myself.

Siri can die in a fire for all I care.
It's complete garbage.

My hopes for Apple in this entire space are rock bottom.

Apple will officially become intelligent in 11-12 months!

Should we be worried or dancing in the streets?!

Sorry but you made a claim... and all I wanted was the specifics that you find are bad.

Personally, while Siri lags on many fronts to other voice assistants, I think it has improved in general slightly.
Faster processors on phones have helped.

Setting alarms and timers does work quickly and well.

so what commands dont?

Tesla commands for in car music are equally as frustrating.

But it was like that with Spotify as well as Apple Music.
One was not better than the other.

Voice searches have never been better than they currently are. It hasn't become worse. It's just not good.

It's often quicker and more accurate to type. Something I prefer not to do while driving. :)
When stuck at lights, I decide if I have time to type a Search.

Any other examples of Siri geting worse?

"Hey Siri play playlist #name in my music library" works reliably for me.

"Hey Siri play playlist #name in my music library" works reliably for me.
tried that and worked when i added "in apple music..." at the start.

and it was a difficult playlist name i used.

perhaps i should call my playlists something easier to say ;)

playlist "gaetanpiolot" was the name i gave it from the YouTube drone videos.
not exactly the easiest word i could have called it.

but Siri found and played it with the prefix app.

yeah it's "youre not holding it right" to force me to say it that way instead of more natural variations...

Apple are hoping the hype train will collapse before 2026 so they don't have to deliver.
IT and technology have always been full of over promise, hype and marketing spin.

Curved TVs? 3D?
AI is going to change the world. It is now.
But not everything is an AI solution.

In the same way a pen and paper are often the best solution as well.

The scary AI bit is people creating silly "animal rescue videos" on YouTube that so many think are real.
"Praise Jesus" comments seriously make me wonder why it is so easy to fool people...

The thing is, the battle isn’t for general AI supremacy, it’s to create a useable AI-powered digital assistant that can do things for you on your phone by understanding your life. That’s what “Siri, when is my mom’s flight landing?” implies.

I’m sure Android will move towards this, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this on the Mac and iPad as well. If it is done well, it should be one of the key moments when AI leaves the confines of the chatroom and gains actual agency to do things on devices.

But I expect the first versions of Apple’s model to be trained against the subset of actions available on Apple devices. It’ll be interesting to see how it compares to for example Microsoft’s Co-pilot.
