Apple intends to launch iOS 18.1 with the first set of much-anticipated Apple Intelligence features on October 28, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Writing in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman says the release date is arriving this month later than initially expected, as Apple is reportedly taking extra time to ensure a smooth rollout and prepare its AI cloud servers for the increased traffic.

The update will bring the first wave of Apple Intelligence features to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 owners. Among the initial features are enhanced writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text, as well as a new Siri user interface. Users can also expect notification summaries for various apps, including Messages and Mail, and a new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted elements from images using generative AI.

However, some of the more advanced Apple Intelligence features will be rolled out in subsequent updates. iOS 18.2, expected in December, will introduce ChatGPT support, Image Playground, and Genmoji for custom emoji creation. The full overhaul of Siri, which promises more precise app control and personalized responses, is slated for early 2025.

Honestly, I expected them to release it sooner. The 18.1 betas seem to be adequately stable so far and I think 2-3 months of preparing their “Private Cloud Computing” servers should be enough (although prepping up an AI can be a lengthy process, Apple is a $3T company for a reason and it never takes more than 2-3 months.)

Also...
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has unveiled the potential release date of Apple’s anticipated late fall hardware releases. The keynote will still be in late October, but the products will potentially launch on November 1st.

The products being launched include the low end 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4, the higher end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M4 Pro and M4 Max, the new iMac with M4, the new redesigned Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro, as well as a new iPad mini.

Interestingly, Gurman is no longer mentioning the lowest end iPad, so it seems that an iPad 11 refresh in 2024 is no longer on the table. This makes sense given the fact that other analysts have indicated that this product wouldn’t launch until early next year.

Gurman also says to expect the following products in the first half of 2025:

  • M4 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Airs
  • New iPhone SE
  • New 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Airs
  • New Magic Keyboards for iPad Air
  • Refreshed AirTag

I wish they were more on top of it in releasing this sooner. And last weeks Apple Watch release snafu. I’m so looking forward to getting off of these betas and never joining the beta program again. It’s become too risky with more than just the one off release issue and these things have even made it to Prod as evidenced with the iPad Pro. Not good at all.

How about public beta 3 to fix the touch screen issues. Everyone has the fix except us public beta users 🙄

My experience with Apple intelligence has been lackluster. The notification summaries aren’t overly useful and the message suggestions are terrible. I haven’t used the summarize stuff at all because I just haven’t found a use case for me. Really disappointed with the messages recommendations. It’s no better than auto text.

You guys do realize the issue with your article, right ? You mention AI servers being ready, but all the features you mentioned (that are currently in the beta) are SLMs that run locally

That's cool. I'm ready for it to arrive on my iPhone 15 Pro.

But I'm not paying a penny for any of the features, so if they ask for money, I will turn it off.

Which will probably work as well as trying to use the Apple TV app to try to watch your purchased content without subscribing to TV+. Get ready for Siri to constantly suggest you upgrade, badges on the system settings icon, push notification ads, etc.

I just want better Siri. I think that's all anyone really wanted and expected. Really disappointing that it's locked to the new hardware.

“Sounds good”

I thought I was the only one. Some of the summaries for messages aren’t bad.
I actually love the touch up in photos. Removing people at my son’s birthday party was awesome.

But to call anything released so far as “intelligence “ is quite a stretch.

So far I’d call it upgrades autofill at best.
