I am confused by this, in Apple's fineprint on their Canadian website, they state:
  • * Apple Intelligence will be available in beta on all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English, as part of an iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia update this October. Canadian English support available this December. Some features and support for additional languages, including French, Japanese and Spanish, will be coming over the course of the next year.
Does this mean, if I set my iPhone's language and Siri to US English, I get iOS 18.1 in December, but if not, I don't get the update?
You will get the update most likely on Oct 28th, whatever your language setting is.

and december for other markets
Really confused by such a posting… you’re member of an pretty nerdy iPhone/Apple forum. Tell me how often since the first iPhone did Apple release software updates on different dates to different regions? Couldn’t remember a single time. Doesn’t make sense.

Thank you! I think the confusion arises from the language localization. My guess (and it is just that, because Apple's wording isn't very clear), is that all regions will receive iOS 18.1 in October, like you stated - however, your ability to use the first round of AI features, such as proofreading, notification summaries, type to Siri, will be dependent on which language (not region) you're iPhone + Siri are set to.

Honestly, I expected them to release it sooner. The 18.1 betas seem to be adequately stable so far and I think 2-3 months of preparing their “Private Cloud Computing” servers should be enough (although prepping up an AI can be a lengthy process, Apple is a $3T company for a reason and it never takes more than 2-3 months.)
iOS 18.1 is not ready for prime-time, not until they fix the random re-springs and disappearing icons issue, to name several notable bugs in beta 5.

Probably you’re hyping the current or upcoming features a bit too much. Name specific features you would use day for day… if google is so much ahead then feel free to use android. The pixel and Samsung phones are also fantastic ones.

The bugs you are mentioning are specific to you. The vast majority of people won’t have any issues with photo sharing. If 18.0 causes so much trouble on your phone, why don’t you install the 18.1 beta?
Sure, I have all the bugs and my apple operating systems are rubbish while you are getting special versions bug free.
You are delusional.

I won’t use any ai feature probably. I don’t see the use for tools that inhibit my capacity to write or read or think.
That’s not the point though.
If I point at the moon, don’t look at my index finger.

Why delusional? You prospect your specific bugs to everyone else. My 18.0 was also not perfect but also not catastrophic. Currently I’m using the 18.1 beta and it’s running well.

You cry that you have to wait for the AI features and Apple is so far behind… otherwise you can’t name a single feature that you would like to use… come on.
Most important is to complain online, right?

i just gave a perspective on the falling apple. AI doesn’t appeal to me, but they were caught off guard, then they go on stage and pretend they are at the forefront. Updating macOS and iOS is only getting you new issues, a few gimmicks half backed and of course new emojis for kids that can’t talk anymore but express themselves with emojis and let chat gpt write for them.

Just a perspective, that’s all

I saw a Verizon commercial on cable TV today showing the iPhone 16 Pro with Apple Intelligence like you could walk into the store and buy it like that today.

Absolutely wild that we’ve come to this point where they’re selling devices and carriers are promoting things that haven’t even released to the general public and the only disclaimer is some 12pt font on the bottom of the screen.

What’s wrong with it?
2 bugs:

1. Input calculation, press enter, get result. Hit AC to clear, cleared to zero, exit app, re-open app and the result re-appears.
2. Input calculation, press enter, get result, press enter again to keep calculating, but nothing happens. Example: Enter 1+2=3, press = again and it should add another 2 and say 5, press enter again and it should add another 2 and say 7….but this action isn’t happening.

Eh this is slightly melodramatic.

I agree they shouldnt market it as it’s able to do it now but at the same time it’s not like the phone can’t ever. They’re clearly trying to sell the device….announcing a feature it can’t do for 2-3 weeks.

Apple intends to launch iOS 18.1 with the first set of much-anticipated Apple Intelligence features on October 28, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Generic-iOS-18.1-Feature-Real-Mock.jpg

Writing in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman says the release date is arriving this month a later than initially expected, as Apple is reportedly taking extra time to ensure a smooth rollout and prepare its AI cloud servers for the increased traffic.

The update will bring the first wave of Apple Intelligence features to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 owners. Among the initial features are enhanced writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text, as well as a new Siri user interface. Users can also expect notification summaries for various apps, including Messages and Mail, and a new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted elements from images using generative AI.

However, some of the more advanced Apple Intelligence features will be rolled out in subsequent updates. iOS 18.2, expected in December, will introduce ChatGPT support, Image Playground, and Genmoji for custom emoji creation. The full overhaul of Siri, which promises more precise app control and personalized responses, is slated for early 2025.

So far in beta AI is really not up to snuff. The rewriting was super exciting for me. But ChatGPT crushes the AI it’s not even close apple intelligence still feels like the Apple version of AI indeed and MAN that’s not a compliment anymore. This can’t be it….

As someone who’s been paying $20/mo for ChatGPT and the same for Claude and actively using them all day for work and life, and running iOS 18.1 beta on 12 Pro and then 16 Pro (and testing Apple’s AI), I can say Apple Intelligence has been one of their biggest scams, so behind, and an embarrassment.

Let me put it this way: I’m willing to pay Apple another $20/month just to let me use ChatGPT or Claude as my assistant to take care of my calendar, contacts, search, music etc.

Trying to do anything with Siri (and Apple's other stock apps infused with their AI) after you’ve used ChatGPT for months is unbearable.

Aftert shoving privacy and on device processing for years for marketing, they now talk about “secure cloud” for “better” AI processing. This really could be the start of something big (good or bad) happening to them.
Yeah man I’m just using free ChatGPT and honestly this AI is embarrassing.

Absolutely laughable. How could they possibly be this far behind on the headline feature of their latest iPhone?? It will have been out for over a month when it finally arrives with a small part of the features promised.

I find it particularly jarring and insane that they are ADVERTISING this feature to new customers, knowing full well that the service they are paying for is not going to be available on the device.

Such an embarrassing miss

But this is known since months. 18.1 was expected for mid October, now its end October, that’s the only new detail here.

Apple playing catchup with whatever is trending in the rest of the industry, instead of actually innovating improvements to real-world use cases - and pre-announcing everything months in advance.

It's such a sad sight to behold.
