I agree, OP! Assistant will be another FaceTime. I have a lot of friends with iPhone 4's and no one ever uses it, instead they use Skype.

Hasn't anyone on here used Siri? It was completely useful, I'd say the name of a restaurant, or type of restaurant, (always picking up and understanding even hard-to-pronounce names of Long Island towns) it brings them up with reviews, I can view them on a map, tell it to call the business' phone number, or make a reservation with OpenTable. SLICKKK. Bring on Assistant!

I don't want your Assistant Apple. Assistant to me would be like FaceTime, which I only used ONCE when I first received the phone and then NEVER USED AGAIN. Give me a bigger screen! Your iPods have big and small screens already. Give the iPhone the option of having a BIGGER screen and let us the consumer buy it or not.

Oh ok, since you won't use it, no one else on the planet will use it either.

Yet its not nearly as good as FaceTime.

Depends how you define "good." To me, being able to video chat with any smart phone or PC (with Skype installed) is GOOD, BETTER, and BEST compared to Facetime.

What if it "learns" from you. e.g accents and pronunciations. I'll have total faith in Apple developing this into something really useful.

I'll be impressed if it can work this out...

This obsession about the bigger screen is getting out of hands.

Apple has NO reason to give you one.

Of course it does. As is patently clear from the hundreds of polls we've seen, half the people on here with an iPhone 4 won't be upgrading unless there's a bigger screen. So if Apple would like to sell more phones they'll have a bigger screen option, so there IS a sound business reason.

Doesn't mean they will give us one though.

That's it? Restaurant reviews and reservations?

16 months for that??

Assistant better be able to prepare emails, prepare calendar events, play my iPod, play movies, browse to specific web pages, do google searches, etc.

Quality is better, no need to check if the other person already has a Skype account. FaceTime just works. Dial number right from the contacts screen.

I assume you mean quality. Well it all depends on what you're using it for. For some - the ability to use it whenever and wherever vs WiFi only could mean a great deal. In that respect - FaceTime's "better" means nothing.

If it IS a bigger screen, I won't be updating. I like the having a smallish phone.

Are you going to rewrite all of the apps to make it work with the bigger screen?

This a rational question -- there's no place for rational questions or comments here. ;)

In all seriousness it is a completely valid subject. If the screen is made larger but the resolution is maintained we'll have a less-than-retina PPI. I can't really see (pun?) Apple abandoning their own masterpiece in this way.

If they change the the screen size and the resolution, but do not maintain a multiple of the current resolution then apps have to be written for this new device (they'll have to be rewritten anyway, eventually, to take advantage of the new dimensions). This starts leading to Androidian fragmentation which developers will not be the most receptive to. :(

For me it really depends on how well it can recognize my voice. I've tried voice control and half the time it doesn't recognize what I'm saying, so it ends up taking more time than it would just execute the command by touch.

The only time I would probably use this feature is if I'm driving and wants to send a text.

I used facetime once, just to see if it worked, and I haven't used it since. But I'm glad it's there just in case. And it's not just about facetime, the camera they put on the iPhone 4 now works with skype and a slew of other video chat services. I'm glad it's there even though I don't use it much. I might one day, like to see a new born member of the family or catch a glimpse of a far away friends wedding, etc. Even if those things never happen- it didn't/doesn't cost me any extra to have it.

I think that Assistant (if that's what they'll call it) sounds pretty cool based on the rumors I've read. I might not use it much, but I might- have to wait until I get my hands on it. But I highly doubt this service will result in an added cost to me, so I don't really care either way. Give it a shot, man, it might make your life easier or you might enjoy using it vs typing stuff in to your calendar or what have you.

If you don't realize that forums like this are a very, very poor representation of the actual user base then there is no point debating what Apple "should" do. The reality is that a huge portion of the actual user base doesn't want to see a half a tablet as the next iPhone.

Big screen phones work for companies who release multiple devices - some with big screens, some with smaller screens. When you only have one flagship for a year at a time, you're not going to see a screen much bigger than the current. 4 inches tops, and I doubt they'll go that high without offering a "compact, phone sized" version.

I find it funny that people say a feature that Apple hasn't shown off they don't know how good or bad it is and say they wouldn't use it.

Great job at being open minded

Well I can understand the logic. If Apple introduced a feature of OS that allowed for credit card payments via swipe (using NFC) and I am not one to want to concern myself with any security issue or if I just prefer to use a credit card - I could certainly say that I wouldn't use the feature, right? No matter how magical it was?

Voice tech has been DOA for over a decade. I think it's a pretty safe bet to say any new "voice control" features are going to be marginal at best and total crap at worst.

A few years back I would have said the same thing about touch screens.

I am not concerned about the presence of voice control which I will never use. I am concerned that a bunch of others might use it adding the number of clueless a$$s who insist on interrupting the rest of the world talking to their phones.

I guess they want everybody to know they have a cell phone or think everybody else wants to hear their personal business.

Please no Assistant!

What if NFC in your phones were just as secure as using a regular credit card (not saying it's not as sucure right now) why wouldn't you use it if it was easier to use?

Maybe on the computers side but not on the moblie side. Google voice tech in Andriod is very good. You guys sound like old people afaid of change. I for one are looking forward to this assistant in iOS 5. I plan on using this just like I use FT a lot
