Voice recognition / Voice control has been around since the 1990s. It's garbage tech that's pined after by Star Trek nerds who all dream of ordering computers to play music and run level 5 diagnostics on the warp drive.

If there was real consumer demand for it, we'd have ditched mice and keyboards years ago.

I haven't quite ditched keyboards and mice, but I do use Dragon Dictate. As with all things practice makes perfect. After I got used to speaking thoughts out loud (no mean trick comma but it can be done full stop), I found it usable. Besides it need be only quicker and/or more accurate than a touch keyboard, which shouldn't be difficult....

I actually agree. Assistant seems like a complete gimmick to me. Sure it's cool, but I don't foresee myself using it once the 'cool' factor wears off (so after day 1).

Have you used Voice Control for calling someone from your contact list? I find it really handy and it's actually quite accurate. Shaves off a lot of time when calling someone you don't normally talk to. It's perfect when driving the car.

If Assistant works anywhere near as good as Voice Control, I'm all for it!

I'm rather excited to see it. And who knows, perhaps they'll even let application developers allow commands to interact with the apps you get. Or with as many cars(and potentially other devices) are beginning to work with our iOS devices, we could tell the assistant to turn our car on and warm it up or cool it down for us before we go to it. It might seem gimmicky, but I feel like it could potentially be a very nice addition.

In reference to FaceTime though, I am somewhat inclined to agree with most sentiments. I've used FaceTime only a handful of times in the year I've owned my iPhone. That said, I'm happy it's there for if I want to use it and for those who use it to chat with family and friends they can't see on a regular basis.

Why? Like I said, it is not a tablet phone. It's a phone... there is no need for something greater than 3.5" on a phone. It doesn't improve reception and just adds bulk to the pocket.

I think you're being a bit biased here. I would like to see the next iPhone @ 4 to 4.3". It won't add much to the footprint of the device, but will improve the experience a lot IMO.

I don't want your Assistant Apple. Assistant to me would be like FaceTime, which I only used ONCE when I first received the phone and then NEVER USED AGAIN. Give me a bigger screen! Your iPods have big and small screens already. Give the iPhone the option of having a BIGGER screen and let us the consumer buy it or not.

Really, really a bummer that Apple is forcing you to buy a phone. Even bigger bummer that they haven't yet hired you to lead their flagship product line. I'm sure they'd be raking in billions if they simply listened to people like you...

What experience? If you want an iPhone OS experience on a bigger screen, Steve and company put the iPad out there for you. You want a phone, a 3.5" screen is plenty.

I read, watch movies, make movies, play games, etc... All of those activities would benefit from a larger screen thus improving the "experience". The feature I use least on my iPhone is the phone. I understand you want to keep the footprint small, I do too. But, I have faith in Apple to increase the size of the screen without greatly increasing the size of the footprint.

Just because Apple chose a 3.5" screen doesn't mean it's the ideal size screen. I've seen and used other smartphones with larger screens and I prefer it over my iPhone 4.

We're talking not even an inch increase, the iPad screen is 9.7", a far stretch from 4.3".

My thoughts exactly. I just measured the front pocket on my jeans - and it's 5" x 5". The pockets in my suit, cargo pants, and jackets are all as large or larger (except for sleeve pocket on ski jacket). It seems to me there is plenty of room for a smartphone with a bigger screen. Who knows, perhaps clothing will be redesigned to accommodate the new size of smartphones rather than cigarette packs.

Why not get an iPad and a simple Nokia phone then? Also, increasing screen increases size, and weight which are things Apple wants to cut down on, not add on.

What if NFC in your phones were just as secure as using a regular credit card (not saying it's not as sucure right now) why wouldn't you use it if it was easier to use?

My point was - if I don't want to make my phone a means to pay for items - I could easily state right now (regardless of how magical the feature is) that I wouldn't use it.

I was responding to the poster who questioned how people could determine if they would or would not use the assistant since they don't know anything about it yet.

My point was - you can know.

Assistant is going to be a revolutionary change to the industry unlike a larger screen which most people do not care about.

So if you want a phone that sucks with a larger screen HTC, Samsung and Motorola make a slew of them.

Probably because telling your phone "I am going to smoke pot and play video games now", is not very useful. I get it.

Please don't give me a new feature, Apple, even after it's way too late to turn back! I don't care if it's shipping tomorrow and it's the best thing since sliced bread... I don't want it! Give me a bigger screen and make all of my current apps obsolete! Please!

Seems logical, right guys?

Thanks for proclaiming we don't need a screen larger than 3.5". Appreciate it.

Why wait until now to develop / release such a service?

Apple has been designing computers and operating systems for 30+ years now. Why isn't there an "assistant" for OS X?

It is a neat idea, and I look forward to seeing it work - but I have serious doubts that it will work anywhere near as well as Apple would like it to.

Why were their not portable touch screen computers with 12 hour battery lives 30 years ago.. What kind of silly question is this...

The best part is I can't wait until some of the phones tell some of you "Stop being so dumb, dummy!"

Since most of the bigger screens out there all have lower resolutions than the iphone 4, which means their pixel density is WAY less, they are not better for things like watching movies and playing games or reading websites.

Just the opposite actually.

If Apple does come out with a bigger screen model, eventually, they will do it correctly, unlike all the android handset makers so far.

Look at the bright side. You save yourself $200! #SilverLining

I'm guessing that they
a.) spent the last 15 months working on Assistant or
b.) spent the last 15 months designing a new shell that houses a sweet 4" screen.

What seems more logical to you all?

Let me guess is it A? And, will the iPhone be lighter?

Actually there's no need for something other than a few buttons and a 8 character monochrome lcd display on a phone. Your way of thinking is exactly what keeps the world old and boring.

You do realize that they have more than just one team, right? And that those guys who work on Assistant and iOS aren't the same guys that fiddle with the hardware, right?

RIGHT! So it's double disturbing to find we only get a new chip and camera after 15 months. Right? Right.

I think its great! Even if you don't use it that much its still a nice feature to have around, and a new feature to brag about to Android! :p

Never works for me, but might be because it's only optimized for English and the German voice recognition sucks. I always have to recheck what the iPhone has understood and most of the time it just does something completely random that cannot even remotely sound like what I've been saying. My fear is that it will be the same with Assistant.......

Totally forgot about this... never used/use it.

Reality check. Why do many iPhone users want a bigger screen? Because many Android devices have. Simple, its just a "me want that as well" reaction. Not an "it needs that".

When the first iPhone came out everyone said the screen size was perfect and if anything a tad big. Now? Everyone says its small. It is not small nor do we need a bigger one. An iPad is here for that. Doesn't fit in your pocket? Carry it.
