So, the iPad 2 wasn't brought out early to combat the Xoom?
I beg to differ.

Um no, the reverse is true. Motorola rushed the Xoom to beat the iPad (and its obvious if you've used a Xoom). Your forgetting the iPad came out roughly the same time last year.

There will always be those whose contracts are up in June/July and will be itching to upgrade. And i bet that a bunch of android phones will be released around that time frame to take advantage and snag iPhone users away.

But still, the majority of us will wait. Apple is probably thinking how o get new customers rather retaining old ones, and the iPhone 5 will definitely be impressive enough to do so, given that there is more R&D time for it.

For now, I have no problems holding onto the iPhone 4 for a couple more months. To this day, the retina display still amazes me.

Is it THAT serious if it doesn't come out when it usually does?

Life is over?

Who said life is over?

Repeat after me: it's a discussion board. For people to talk about rumours, products, what-ifs, ect. It gets really annoying how ppl jump down a posters throat for starting a thread. If you don't feel it's worthy of discussion, perhaps just... Don't click?

Many people ugrade during the holiday season, that's why there are so many deals after Thanksgiving. Nothing better than watching Apple bury the competition during the holidays with the release of the iphone 5.

SNIP

Followed by the tumbling of Apple stocks. The iPhone is probably Apple's weakspot at the moment, as they reigned supreme of the smartphone market and Android came out of nowhere and took the spot as a smartphone, imo.I doubt this will happen to the tablet market, but we never know.
If anything Apple has to step up their iOS and iPhone upgrades, specifically the iPhone.

SNIP.

Hmm i don't think the iPhone is apple's weak spot, look around your average commuter train/airport/bar etc, places where you see people using phones and you will notice the amount of iPhones out there in comparison to other handsets, it's huge! Also don't forget, yes there may be more android units out there but android runs on lots of differing handsets from different manufacturers, all with their own different cameras, memory, features etc. For a true comparison it should be android vs iOS or phone manufacturer (EG HTC) vs apple iPhone, you will see there are more iphones out there than there are HTC whatevers or samsung thingamabobs, and i think total iOS compared to total android could be pretty close in numbers (all 4 iPod touch models, both iPads, all 4 iPhones).

On your point on upgrades, i think that apple have it spot on, 1 year cycles for handsets are good, it allows new technologies to be combined to make a great handset. iOS updates are good also, if your iphone is 2 years old you won't get the new software, ok seems fine to me, but other than that you get regular updates and patches, something that was never done before and better than android as you know your manufacturer will have approved it as they write the software.

what do you think will be the repercussions (if any) if everyone has to wait until september (or later) for the iphone 5?

It depends on why Apple posponing the release. The Japan earthquake has an effect on most phone manufacturers, too. A short delay of 3-5 months will have minimal effect. There are 3 types of smartphone users. One, it's time to renew my contract and I want the latest one available. This person would get the iPhone 4, if he a return customer. If he was an android user, then it depends whether he liked the phone or not or was he waiting for iPhone come to Verizon. If latter, he will get the iPhone 4. 2nd type of person, true apple fanboy will wait. He buys a new one every year. Time is irrevelant. 3rd type, this person wants the latest and greatest and don't care which platform. He will get the best phone whenever he can afford or contract is up. This person will get android or iPhone. This third group is effected the most. This group is a minority.

I've had my 3Gs for nearly 2 years now and I was looking forward to getting a new phone soon. It's a great phone, but after 2 years of use, it's just getting a little rough around the edges so to speak and is ready to be retired. Those bright shinny new Androids can be tempting. I'm guessing there are a lot of people in the same boat as me. While I will most likely wait it out, I'm sure there are a lot of people who aren't dedicated to Apple and will be more likely to move on to something new when their contracts are up. Will it be enough to hurt Apple? Probably not, but I don't think they like that thought none the less. To have millions of people with contracts expiring and no new phone to keep them in the family is a poor idea on my opinion.

I've used a Xoom, owned it for a day, and although Honeycomb has real potential, it was clearly rushed and simply not ready. Probably a dozen forced closes in one night of ownership, including on Apps that came with the Xoom. Took it back for an Ipad2, bought my first Mac a week later.

i'm thinking more along the lines of what kind of press will they get if they delay the iphone until september.

I guess technically a product that was never announced cannot have a delayed release date (internally, yes). Now, the white iPhone 4, that is actually delayed.

Well relatively, their Mac sales increased, iPad is off the roof, and nobody can use another music player except an iPod.
Yup you're right, i see iPhones everywhere and i love it! They have the best ecosystem, and it's a really powerful selling point.
Just the notification system which makes up a smartphone is where Apple comes short, but i think all these problems will be solved with iOS 5!

Apple is projected to being the #1 company in the world in market cap, there is no way they'll disappoint.

Theres a few things that iOS5 needs to have to compete with android. Seeing as how it is impossible for able to compete in terms of hardware specs. They have to focus on their OS. That being said their are a few things they can take form android. One of which Could be Widgets the other being the notification system.

The thing I want them to do is have 1gb partitioned off as like a flash drive where you can access documents, save stuff from the web and what not. I think that would be a well loved feature.

I'm not sure if they have a choice ... supply is already a problem with the iPad 2 after what happened in Japan, it might be smarter to delay the launch to ensure a solid supply chain. Furthermore, the i4 is still new to Verizon and the white iPhone 4 will probably revive it a little bit.

I want an early as release as possible but I can understand why it might not happen.

I was only expecting a minor revamp: HSPA+, speed bump, iOS 5. But now that it's been pushed back, I'm expecting a lot more out of Apple. Swapping out a few chips doesn't warrant a 3-4 month delay.

Any bad press about iPhone 5 delay would be more than eclipsed with the iPad 2 sales numbers. Besides, if Apple unveils a substantial update/road map for iOS at WWDC in June, that'll certainly be worth some kudos in the press for at least a little while.

apple is playing the money game to sell more iphone 4s so people can buy now then boom summer iphone 5..haha..

i can wait im good with my iphone 4 just got a replacement:D

im looking more into iOS 5
