The current reality is that people now care much more about purell and toilet paper(ridiculous) than a new iPhone. This announcement was predictable based on the trajectory of this virus. Hopefully things improve quickly.

PS: I'd love for Apple to host all previous WWDC's through their Apple Event app on AppleTV
If you look up “Apple keynotes” in the podcasts app, you’ll see all the previous events there, in video form. :)

I’m not sure if you can AirPlay these to an Apple TV, but it’s worth a shot.

YouTube is also a great place to go to if you want to watch an old keynote.

It's just a variation of the flu. And it only kills weak gramps and grams, like that grandma in Dante's Peak.

Ya know... you’d think folks would start to realize that billions of dollars are at stake. No “fake news” media could pressure countries to go on lockdown - companies to suspend supply chains and push back rollout plans for products that sell in the billions.

Don’t believe any media... ok I can actually understand that, but you’re probably a conspiracy nut. Don’t believe the billions in lost revenue... you’re blind. Believe in some lie to convince yourself “it’s just the flu” INSTEAD of the media OR the markets and corporate responses... now that’s just willfully ignorant and dangerous.

Hoping they could try something new in times of crisis and work around limitations.

And that’s exactly what this is, it’s a ‘workaround’. And I realize this is a tech site, but it’s not just Apple doing this, other companies/organizations/institutions are implementing the same following in terms of canceling any large gatherings/swaths for conferences, etc. This is not optional, it’s necessary, and crucial moving forward for safeguarding.

come on! just do it virtually. my 6s seriously needs a replacement and the iphone 6/SE-2 is what I was banking on.

but if this is more about the factories than the presentation event, then it’s understandable even if still a bummer. My phone is annoying but people’s lives are more important. I can wait.

this post is a roller coaster of emotions.

Absolutely false. First, it’s NOT a flu virus. Second, Doctors in their 20s and 30s have died from it including the one in China that first alerted people to it. He was 34.

Who was detained and apparently not treated, seemingly out of vindictiveness by CPC. If he were 34 in a western country, I’d wager he would have recovered

“Things will only be getting worse for the forseeable future.”

That depends on how effectively countries implement preventive measures. China is just now starting to get things under control.
I stopped believing the reported numbers from China. No way to stop/flatten the curve with 80k ppl infected and 1bn doing day-to-day life and business unrestricted. From Wuhan´s polulation of 11 million reportedly more than 1 million fled to other areas before lockdown... do the math, follow what Italy has to face now.
Living in Germany, I´m deeply worried now too.

I don’t for-see this improving ‘quickly’, as a matter fact, I’d say it’s just getting started in North America. At this junction, stockpiling Cleaning products isn’t the answer, basic hygiene Measurements and using sound judgment in your surroundings/who you come in contact with are key elements.

On a quick side-note:

I’m actually shocked to see how many juvenile comments members have made regarding the situation on this site, given the severity and the lives lost, but just wait until it happens to them and/or a close friend/family member, they’ll change their tone real quick, guaranteed.

Those videos are all in the Apple TV "Developer" app, formerly the WWDC app. They're just keeping the technical stuff separate, and because they have some non-WWDC tech videos as well.

Remember last year? They launched products with press releases, then there was an event.
They can launch the new iPhone with a press release when it is ready, it isn't a brand new phone just the old form factor with new internals, they don't need an event for that.
They could invite some members of the press once the product is ready, they did the same for the 16 MBP last fall.

I'm sure WWDC will be only virtual this year. A keynote with some Apple employees to avoid an empty room and all the sessions streamed for developers.
Too bad for people who could have attended, it is great to meet other developers and spend time with Apple engineers on the labs, but better safe than sorry, it is too dangerous to have thousands of people from all over the world.

I don't think there will be a WWDC. I also don't think they will ship anything this year until at least September. Cook might talk up a recovery but news from within China's manufacturing tells a different story. Next iPhone will also be later than planned, I believe. Phones are assembled in China but the components and tech come from many different places.

Italy cases now up to over 630. That's over 200 deaths in one day. A country the size of California. Think on that, America.

According to Sky news reports the latest in Italy is that 877 people are in intensive care, and that’s from all age groups.
At least 631 dead.
And 10149 infected presumable including those are in intensive care, with around 1000 people having fully recovered.

If you do the math you’ll see the death ratio is far far higher then the flu. The figures show roughly 1500 died or in intensive care.
Italy had its first cases I believe 3 weeks ago.
One should note the extraordinary lengths being taken to control the virus, these measures are not taken to fight the flu. Because it isn’t the flu.

Apple and others are cancelling events taking advice from the necessary bodies, this is a virus they do not want to be taking a hold that much is obvious. It is also infecting all age ranges, not only the old. More and more professional sports people are self isolating having contracted the virus, top level at the peak of fitness people.

To be honest it sounded like a pretty lacklustre event anyway. Hopefully WWDC will go ahead but obviously safety comes first.

Very unlikely as COVID-19 hasn't really got started yet. 8-16 weeks time will be the peak according to many experts.

Wouldn't be surprised to see all new hardware delayed until Q1/Q2 2021. Even trying to manufacture existing lines will be a struggle with factories & supply chain partners not operating for the foreseeable.

My university prepare for remote teaching using video conferencing and other means like videos of lectures. No surprise events are cancelled or postponed. Press release and videos would be good enough for the products to be launched.

It has not peaked yet. Fighting the spread has one important consequence and that is to spread out the number of cases so the hospitals can manage.

Using the coronavirus in political arguments is extremely bad taste. Thinking that "as long as it does not hurt me everything is fine" is beyond bad taste and very shortsighted and one of the reason the virus is spreading.

China is slowing getting back to normality. I think Apple will be able to launch its 5G iPhone this year, maybe not in September. iPhone X was launched in November, the Xr in October, so if they face a production delay of a couple of months is not going to be a huge problem.
Demand will be lower than usual due to the crisis though, people are losing their jobs or have less income, so an expensive product like the iPhone will be out of budget. I think there will be limited supply, but with a lower demand is shouldn't be a problem. The real problem is people holding on their old iPhones because they can't afford the new one. At least they can keep making money with services as long as people don't switch to Android.

People seem to be obsessing too much on the mortality rate. What people should be more concerned about is whether each city's/state's healthcare system can handle a massive number of patients in ICU at the same time.

If you looked at Italy, specifically Lombardy for example, the problem was that they had too many sick people requiring intensive care due to COVID-19 (in addition to normal ICU problems) and not enough ICU beds to handle the influx. Lombardy contributed about 90% of deaths and cases. The healthcare system in Lombardy was excellent and yet Lombardy was caught off-guard by the major influx of patients. Based on testimonies from doctors in Milan and Bergamo, patients above 65 were triaged and had a lower priority for ICU treatments simply because they were likely to have multiple co-morbidities thus their survival rate even with ICU treatment was lower than younger people who were fitter

The stats also suggest that if you have to go to ICU for COVID-19, it will take 3-6 weeks for you to recover. That's a very long time to be in ICU. If you don't have enough ICU beds, mortality rate will increase. This is why the quarantine was enacted. It was to slow down the spread of the disease so that patient admissions could be staggered and the ICUs had time to treat everyone.

I bet in a 100 years new flu viruses will be a none issue. Since they have a big impact, new approaches to solving the problem will be more generally known and practiced besides doing a flu shot that takes time to develop.
