So if I'm a non iphone AT&T user, who is not elgible for an upgrade. Do i go to the apple store to get the 8GB for $199 instead of $399.

No, all of the upgrade rules are exactly the same. If you're not upgrade eligible, then you pay the upgrade pricing of $399 and $499.

no caveats?

what is this little point "no caveats" for non-iphone ATT customers?

How do you think ATT will handle it if I buy a phone from Apple then want to activate it?

What the ****? Yet another reason not to purchase the iPhone.

Whats your issue about SS #'s... if your gripe is you don't have one in your country... then understand this topic was for US AT&T customers only.

If your gripe is that you have to give out your SS #... I assume this is needed for ALL new activiations in the US... (in order to do a credit check)... The same way that the SIN number is requested in Canada.

Its not specific to the iPhone... its specific to the cell phone industry.

Social Security Number

We just have to memorize the Social Security Number right, we don't need the actual card?

apple still leaves many questions unanswered on their launch and activation process. come on apple there's only 3 days left!
anyway i have a question, I'm 18 and an Authorized user on my mom's AT&T account, will Apple be able to see I am an authorized user and let me buy and resign the contract or will my mom still have to be there?

A) i love Motorola anyway (have had them for god knows how long), and HATE the instinct...

B) I'm not refusing to buy it in protest, i just simply cannot afford it.

C) I really want to see the day rogers offers something that good, personally i dont even need a data plan (wifi, and i mainly use the thing as a PHONE), but apparently rogers doesn't comprehend that...

B & C are valid points. As for Motorola... I used to be a manager for a Rogers store (a few years ago) and I had nothing but problems from their phones. I got to a point when I refused to sell them.

My SIN # HAS NEVER been requested when buying a phone\ signing a contract. Don't know where you got that from... im Canadian BTW.

And on another note, why the hell would you want to just give yout your SIN\SSN?

Pin?

I am a Verizon customer with a regular cell phone switching to an iPhone. So what does this mean to me?

"- Your current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)"

I have my wireless account number, so what password/PIN do I need?

To each their own i guess. I have been luck i guess, no problems with any of them, but i'm under the impression you have seen a few more phones than i have...

I did not have to give my Social Security number to use my current phone. Apple does not need that information.

I assume this request for it is just to make some lives easier. Like up here in Canada.. they ask for your SIN #... but they dont need it... you can easily just use 2 other pieces of ID. It just provides a more accurate credit check.

Seriously, all the hoops that they are making you jump through suck. I'm still buying one though...

Ok, now i am thoroughly confused. I am a current AT&T customer who is not eligible for an upgrade. I called 3 DC area Apple stores yesterday and they all told me since I am not eligible for an upgrade that I would have to go to an AT&T store on Friday. Now Arn, who I trust more than an Apple store or AT&T rep, posts that Apple has no caveats regarding someone in my position. I really, REALLY wish Apple would publicize something that clarifies this point because I would much rather go to an Apple store than an AT&T store.

For the credit check process... all the companies take the SIN # as a form of ID... It makes more sense to use a credit card and DL... but I know I had LOTS of new activations using the SIN number. I got that information from my day's as a Store Manager for Rogers. I probably did a credit check on about 40% of my customers using their SIN #.

Who are they and why do I need to make someone's life easier?? This is about protecting my identity. Credit? What, am I buying a home or something? This is a freakin' electronic toy we're talking about!

I'm was just pointing out that Apple didn't exclude current AT&T customers in their instructions. If Apple Retail stores are telling you to go to an AT&T store, then I would follow their advice.

Just a quick question. I contacted AT&T because the account is in my parents name (I'm over 18, so I can do the contract) and they said as long as I am an authorized user and I can verify the account (mom's last 4 of ssn and last name) that I could purchase the iPhone and sign for the new 2-yr contract. Will Apple also allow this, or will I be forced to go to an AT&T store?

It's simple, Apple has the ability to check your AT&T account information. If you aren't eligible for an upgrade, then they will simply charge you the $399 & $499 price points and activate it on your existing account.

Yeah you're right, was just holding out a little hope I could still go to an Apple store :D
