Are they serious? What if you're already an iphone customer? Do you still need to be ready with your freakin social security number to transfer the existing account to the slightly newer iphone???

Who in this country, over the age of 18, does not know their SS#? How difficult is it "to be ready" with it?

If you're that concerned, just don't volunteer it unless the Apple or AT&T rep says there's no way to complete the procedure without it.

- Credit card
- Social security number
- Valid, government-issued photo ID
- Your current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)

I thought current iPhone customers won't need a credit check...is this not the case?

I'm 18 and an Authorized user on my mom's AT&T account, will Apple be able to see I am an authorized user and let me buy and resign the contract or will my mom still have to be there?

I, too, would like to know this. Or do we have to go to AT&T?

privacy ...

What the ****? Apple does not need my Social Security number! Yet another reason not to purchase the iPhone.

Agreed! And you may not even know why.

The Privacy Act of 1974 states there are only 4 instances when a social security number can be demanded or expected ... And purchasing a phone IS NOT one of them. Stand up to your right to maintain your privacy. Big government controls America too much already. End rant!

Also... its Apple and AT&T ... two MAJOR companies ... they have to take appropriate steps to protect your private information. They legally cant use it for anything other than what you authorize them to do with it... and they appear to have a solid track record protecting everyones information.

As a Canadian looking down there... I would be more afraid of the Patriot Act than a multi-national corporation having my SS #.

I believe that request is for new activations... The have everything the need to do another credit check on file (if your adding a line)... if your upgrading then they (most likely) wouldnt need to do a credit check.

I am ready. Not sure what time I am going to head to the Apple Store yet on Friday though. Any suggestions how early I should go get in line.

I am also hoping they have a line for current iPhone owners and one for new At&t customers. Should speed things up a bit.

Over 18? Probably okay. Under 18? Probably not.

apple still leaves many questions unanswered on their launch and activation process. come on apple there's only 3 days left!
anyway i have a question, I'm 18 and an Authorized user on my mom's AT&T account, will Apple be able to see I am an authorized user and let me buy and resign the contract or will my mom still have to be there?

also..does anyone know if i can buy at an apple store if I have a FAN# on my account. i currently don't get the discount right now anyway for some reason. if Apple wont deal with FAN accounts i can remove it. but does anyone know yet. my employees at the apple store seem to know less than us macrumors members do.

I did some quick searching and it sounds like probably you are okay. We don't know how much of an interface into AT&T's system Apple has, but I would think they would make authorized user information available so that they can sell more phones. But there is a possibility that they haven't.

For anyone under 18 (I know you are 18), I wouldn't count on having it work out. You aren't legally bound in a contract if you are under 18 and I doubt that AT&T and/or Apple really wants to go for that risk or the work of trying to get your folks in to resign the contract or recover the phone, etc.

whats the word on "authorized users" being able to upgrade from iPhone gen1 to gen2? are "authorized users" able to upgrade, or only account holders?

I wouldn't be so eager to leave your ID at home. It would be unfortunate to go wait in line, get a phone and be denied because they asked for ID to verify your credit card was actually yours. ;)

Ha yeah good point make sure to sign the thing at least or else you are guaranteed trouble. Seeing someone not bring their ID to match the credit card would almost be as classic as the guy who was behind me (2nd in line after a 26 hour wait) for the first launch who didn't know you needed a computer (and claimed to not have access to one period) to activate the phone so he left the line at 5:30PM.

While I would assume that they will not run a credit check on existing customers, I assume they will ask for the last 4 digits of the account holders to verify identity, just like when you call them on the phone for customer support.

thanks i figured this would be the case, i'll keep trying to find out more information about authorized users as well. i hope apple will know if they will have access to this info by thursday though.

I wonder how many they will have in stock on Friday. I also wonder if they will have any good cases for it on stock on Friday.

only US apple stores selling iphone at launch

Apple is not — at least at launch — selling the iPhone 3G at any of its retail locations outside the United States

Australia, Japan, Italy, and UK retail stores will also not have initial stock of the iPhone 3G, forcing customers in those countries to visit official carrier stores or third-party partners like Fido in Canada

This is according to iPhone atlas

http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/07/...-any-plans-to-sell-iphone-3g-at-apple-retail/

Taking it for what it's worth, I had several responses on Apple's forums saying that Apple would have access to authorized user information.

Privacy Act of 1974 doesn't apply

Agreed! And you may not even know why.

I think you need to re-read the Privacy Act of 1974 (http://www.justice.gov/oip/privstat.htm):

"Sec. 7(a) (1) It shall be unlawful for any Federal, State or local government agency to deny to any individual...because of such individual's refusal to disclose his social security account number."

I don't see anything in there saying it's unlawful for a non-government entity to require it. Our credit system, as flawed as it is, chose to use the SSN as a universal identifier and so if you want to play the game, you have to play by the rules. Are you going to refuse to give your SSN when buying a house, a car or entering into some other major contract?

These are instructions for U.S. stores.

In that case why does the article not say Apple US instead of Apple?

The iPhone is launching in 70 countries this year, the US is only one of them. Yes it may well be the largest launch but the majority of sales will be outside the US.

2 year break down costs

I cant wait to spend 199$ for the phone.
109.99 a month + taxes

= 1519.88 for the first year!
= 1319.88 for the second year!
Looks like my 2 year contract will be = 2839.76

Thats going to be way over 3k when you add fees and taxes.
at that rate, i should get 2 phones for free!

ya i made that comment earlier... As much as I love MacRumors... I think they tend to forget the international audience sometimes... but to be fair they have had decent international coverage lately.

lets face it, America is the majority, Canada may be on top but we still have a smaller population therefore making us somehow less important... No one ever wants to talk about Canada. Also keep in mind that there are other countries being left out as well, it would be near impossible to cover all of them.

The US will be the Majority but most sales will be outside the States. The pent up demand is larger outside of the US. You just have to look at how slow sales have been in the official countries (UK/DE/FR) to see that people have been waiting for the 3G iPhone.

Unless Arn updated the OP real fast, someone didn't pay close enough attention...

Apple has posted guidelines about what to bring and expect at the iPhone 3G launch at U.S. Apple Retail stores. In order to purchase and activate your iPhone 3G, you will need:...

Oh but AT&T has to pay for all that expensive infrastructure they put up. All those 3G towers... and all that airtime and data... I'm sure that they will be losing money on the deal!!! whats that? Record profits? oh.

And up here in Canada land our wonder Mr. Rogers will be bending us over for 3 years not just 2.

Communications in general are waaaay too expensive now. Look at what people pay for cable TV and they don't even get a subsidized TV! I'm not defending the iPhone price plan, but prices are getting crazy in all areas.
