It's amazing how people still behave like Apple is run in a garage, or it's starved for money.

Apple has over 100.000 employees, the deepest cash war chest in the world. Apple can, and will, concentrate on multiple projects in multiple ares. Get used to it, as this attitude is going to blossom in the near future.

Apple will be a much bigger, very diversified company in the future.

As for the reality show, what topic is hotter in the new generations than apps? Snapchat, Pokemon Go... Apps is basically where people live now.

The subject is certainly interesting, and if the execution is right it could well be a success, and create a positive feedback loop towards Apple. Not to mention the VC, promotion aspect. Ckearly, you're not a developer.

Finally, about Beats 1: I'm in the music industry and being featured there means your career has started. It's the industry reference, and all that in one year.

First, it's a myth that Apple was run in a garage. (Quote Woz). Also who said Apple was starved for money? The problem might actually be Apple has too much money and looking for ways to spend it much like a bored socialite might go on shopping sprees on 5th Ave or Rodeo Drive. My point, Apple has lots on the burner right now, and sure, they can afford it all, but they seem very unfocused these days. In the past they've been like a laser beam rather than a jack of all trades, master of none.

I've been using Apple products since the Apple II in high school. Bought my first Mac in '88. I'm no spring chicken here. I've experienced the best and worst of Apple times & products. Bought my first shares in 2001 and never looked back, but recently, yes, I do wonder about the direction Apple is going, having experienced the reigns of Spindler and Amelio in particular.

Look, if you are happy where Apple is going, then hey you are happy. But I get dismayed when I see Apple giving priority to pedestrian stuff along like Apple Music and making infomercials rather than pushing and promoting projects like HomeKit a bit harder. I mean HomeKit predates the Beats buyout and yet, Amazon is killing Apple in the smart home arena.

As for Apps, yes, it's where people "live" but its a small neighborhood of fine homes. The rest are spec and mobile homes. The apps people use get promoted very well virally. In fact, I don't think the key apps kids use would do well if they were given the hard sell Apple promotion. As you put it, what Apple is doing is great for VC promotion -- an infomercial like I originally said it was. Apple is better than that I believe. But, hey, if you like seeing Apple becoming a boring, faceless conglomerate like GE, then I guess you are into what you are into. Of course even GE realized it was too diversified after the '08 crash and sold off a lot of units to focus on a few things rather than everything.

And if Apple Music was "reference" then there wouldn't have been talk about buying Tidal to get it's exclusives. Apple would be doing find scooping up every exclusive around. Also if it was that dominant Spotify wouldn't be actually growing in paid subscriptions this year. Again, when I ask young people what streaming service they listen to its usually Spotify. Last, would they even admit the interface of Apple Music stunk to high hell requiring a "do over" a year out. Apple seems to be needing to do a lot of "do overs" recently. That's the problem when you are a jack of all trades, master of none.

Hmm...I don't here anyone I know buzzing about Spotify. They're not buzzing about Apple Music either. They're streaming music services. I don't think they're a big deal to anybody anymore.

It's a big deal to it's 30 million paid subscribers, up 20 million this year. That doesn't even include cheap-os like me that still stick with the free version. I don't think you can say streaming is irrelevant, i.e., not a "big deal to anybody anymore" but a long stretch.

Sorry to disagree. There hasn't been any innovation other than spec updates for quite a while now.
Making devices thinner with revolutionary welding techniques or iCloud and other services which suck isn't what the consumers needed. And, they know it!

Usually when Apple enters a field despite it being crowded, they displace and disrupt.

Their current hardware line up is non existent and superold technology. I can well remember when they launched a new product and I really wanted it. That has not happened in years.

Using Apple since 1984 with all it's highs and lows.

Let's just hope it's only a valley of boredom they are in right now, but the rah,rah of having more exiting projects in the pipeline than ever for the last 25 years is embarrassing.

Apple TV "hobby" could and should have been a real game platform and Xbox competitor, but somebody fell asleep at the switch.

Somebody please open the pipeline or at least unclog it a little, so it drips out something we can use.

Hint: The watch wasn't it!

You're simply, flat out wrong.

Apple built SOCs are industry-leading and completely designed in house.
3D touch is a unique feature, completely built in-house.
Touch ID, integrated to the Secure Enclave in the CPU is not yet matched in the industry.
The new Wide Color and True Tone Apple technologies, coming soon to iPhones, allowed for "the best tablet display, ever" according to Display Mate.
And that's just some example of tangible innovation from Apple.

But much of the innovation came in the form of a much deeper integration between devices, something we Apple users take for granted, but it's all but a pipe dream outside Apple's garden.

This said, my feeling, corroborated by several industry rumors, is that much bigger things are cooking in secret, and will be released starting from September ("biggest MBP redesign, ever").

There's very little buzz about streaming media services. If anyone is saying there was "Buzz" they arae confusing "Buzz" with Marketing.

Apple Marketed the crap out of Beats 1 and Apple Music.

it actually scares me a little to see that people don't have the critical thinking to be able to differentiate between marketting push and public buzz.

I have nothing against the services. Just re-inforcing your point

This army of whiners can only appreciate Apple's past achievements and will consider anything new a flop, or a mistake.
.

I think it's fantastic that Apple is attempting to use their funds and stability to try new things. Bring on the Apple Car if they want. Bring on Original Content. Bring it is. Spend the money, Get peopel working creating new stuff for new options in all markets. Anyone who doesn't think this way is nuts

The problem with the lack of updates to the Mac's, or the other perceived tech doesn't mean they can't also do other things... if managed well. its like telling Proctor and Gamble they shouldn't diversify and ONLY be allowed in one industry.

the issue I have with the two titles Apple has announced for their original content is that they're essentially (and sorry if crude) Masturbatory self congradulatory meta nonsense that are more Commercials than anything else. The First announcement was a story of Dre's life and how he got to be awesome and succesful, written by Dre, Produced By Dre, etc etc. It feels like they're just in it so they can show off how rich and amazing they are. That rubs me wrong. And this one is nothing more than a glorified commercial for the App store dressed as reality TV.

They're free to make the shows, But I'm also free to Cringe at them

I can only hope I am. Obviously I like Apple products better than PC, but still trying to be objective.
And, the Apple is a little rotten at the moment for me.

Some of what you mention is in the future.
Some of what you praise as innovation I don't use, so maybe that's unfair.

What I am talking about are entire products, not just features or improvements on existing things.

I can only see the now which looks bleak. iphones matured, trying to make the iPad Pro a replacement for MBPs, MacMini (discontinue it already Apple), Mac Pro stone old by todays standards and MBPs not with the latest chips.

The watch is not for me, at least at that price, plus the Apple stinginess about 5400rpm hard drives, low GBs in products always made me wonder. Took them forever to bump the iPhone to 128 GB.

Then there are their iCloud and other services, which I do not use either.

I posted some place before that when they do something that doesn't work for me, I skip it.

Lately I basically just use my iPhone , iPad Gen2 (still good) and 2 MBPs one 2008 17" until it dies and one
2014 15.4".

I think we are all ready to be wowed if what you say is true.

its funny, for someone who calling out someone else for being "Flat out wrong".... you are actually "flat out" wrong sa well

That's all I know of. And they finished on time and under budget. I think if a Hollywood film can achieve that then Apple will be fine producing a simple TV show using the software - if they want to. OP I was responding to made the case that Apple would have to use PCs. Which clearly isn't the case.

1 film is better than the vapour rumour you've presented. No?

Agreed that statement is false, as they can just go grab one off the assembly line for $0. But if they were a real film house they would probably not run to the Final Cut X boat.

There is only 1 film because that is all that has been made with it. Avid is back as king. Apple is not interested in professional film at this point. Final Cut X is a pro-sumer product.

ITT: People are cringing and ridiculing this show idea. But I, for one, am so going to watch it.

I initially thought this (with a bit less cynicism) but imo it seems very Apple to stay small and "in house" while taking their first steps into original content. Dre is very famous, and many people will want to see it. I don't really have an opinion on him or care, however, if they announced (and they still may) that a similar project was coming forth featuring Trent Reznor (also at Apple) I'd be all over it and very excited. Why not? VH1 did if for years.

They'll branch out into non Apple, non music stuff eventually. Trent Reznor was very close to having his "Year Zero" concept album/ARG experience produced as a limited original series on HBO a few years back. I wouldn't AT ALL be surprised to see that revived in a few more Apple TV hardware/tvOS revisions with a launch of Apple's own HBO like original series/movies.

With the right property/script/talent Apple has the cash to VERY easily surpass (scale wise) what HBO has achieved with Game of Thrones. I think creative types in Hollywood will find Apple to be a nurturing environment and very "outside" the Hollywood studio system, which means they will be able to attract top *talent* much like HBO. Could get interesting.

I am understanding this will be like those countless shows about competitive cooking, competitive tattooing, competitive bladesmithing, competitive gold searching, competitive lumberjacking etc., just with nerds. "You have three hours to program Apple Music 2.0. The time... starts... NOW!!!"

I find it hard to imagine it's going to be popular with absolutely anyone, but what do I know.
Imagine... The clock ticking as a gang of geeks frantically bash their keyboards, trying to design a good version iTunes. Sounds really exciting!!

I'm just going to put this out there: Eddy Cue is a bozo with lots of lousy ideas, who will usher in a bozo invasion if he's not dealt with. I think I've seen enough bozos to recognize one...

WoW. Now this is some really amazing idea for a competitive realty show. "Apps" . I dont know who came up with that idea buts thats he/she sure is brilliant. Also this is a chance for devs to have there 1 minute of fame. And the gain is forcing people to think creatively and Consider programming for iOS Devices seriously. I hope this will bring about some console quality games for Apple TV.

I agree.

Just that the current announcements are Cringe worthy. I .. don't know what VH1 is, so i don't understand the comparison.

but yes, Apple 100% has the money, wealth and talent to produce high quality programming.

But I think they need to hire out to REAL writers / directors instead of believing that just cause they made apple rich, they can also do it themselves. It feels very much like they're acting the "king" and believe they cvan do anything they want themselves (talking about the executive board) and have lost connection to the majority of people.
