Hmmm

Cant say I'm mad about the price drop because I got mine for free but easy on my pocket when I get my wife one. Does this mean someone is going to sue Apple becuase they didnt disclose to customers that the price was going to be dropped? LOL!! I will have seen everything if that happens...

Err, good luck with that they arn't shipping until the 28th...

Dammit i can't decide which iPod to get now.. :D

you cant it doesnt come out until around September 28th, from what I saw on the estimated shipping date when I tried to order one.

Has Apple lost it?

None of these designs appeal to me aesthetically. Same goes for the recent hideous iMac redesign. I won't be investing.

The golden age of Apple design is most definitely over.

Does anyone else think the iphone price drop was very suprising? I bought one on opening day and do not regret it one bit but it still kinda makes me a little mad it has dropped $200 dollars. Its only been two months, think how long it USUALLY takes video game consoles to drop. And to already get rid of the 4gb?! I understand this is what companies do to get more business but it just seems like its a little early and might not go over to well with previous iphone buyers. I cant stand people who say "im waiting till the price drops" on technology because you could sit around and wait a lifetime and iphones will probably be free with contracts some day but what do you guys think about the quick price drop?

The iPhone is nothing but a 15 minute cash cow. The iPhone is actually an iPod with phone functionality. The whole touch screen thing was meant for the iPod. Steve has said himself that the cell phone industry comes third after the iPods.

iPhone was a gimmick for Apple to gain more exposure and cash in big bucks in a short period of time. Apple is a very clever company and this 200 dollar price cut after one month and a few days is not random. It was planned all along.

Did anyone notice when he was talking about the TV shows, he said.."we have sold just shy of 100 million tv shows"...on the screen comes 95 million number and he says...95 thousand. Lol...maybe he was just a little too excited to show the new stuff. Kinda funny.

It's so much fun reading all the posts from complaining iPhone users about the price drop... clearly they're all here for their own interest and not for Apple being successful as a company.

New products always cost more.. cars even sell for more than advertised when they come out... and then prices drop.. how quickly depends on how successful the product is. Apple is not different from other phone makers, Nokia does the same, Moto does, LC does...

Apple can afford to lower the price by $200 because of several reasons: instead of 2 models the offer just one, making a lot of things easier for suppliers and shops and this translates in a cost reduction.

AND using many of the ingredients from the iPhone in the new iPod touch.. by this they will increase the amount of the same components, which means lower prices for those components and Apple can reduce the price of the finished product even more.

You pretty much nailed economies of production on the head.

Semi off topic here but does the Touch not have a speaker? If that's the case I'm infinitely glad I bought an iPhone - it's just murder to have something that beautiful and not be able to show it to friends or anything... I understand the no speaker in the classic as the screen is still tiny but the iPod touch? Come on!! Eh well - I've got an iPhone and wasn't in the market for a new iPod anyway as I have a First gen 1GB Shuffle and an 80GB 5.5G black iPod.

iPod Shuffle: Same old, lame, don't care at all.
iPod Nano: Decent price for the features, iAudio D2 and similair still owns it.
iPod Classic: More space is ok I guess.
iPod Touch: Why get it when you can get an iPhone for $100 which is way cooler and then remove that stupid company lock.

Ringtones: This is so gay it doesn't even deserv to be mentioned, it sucks and should be free. Way to not go Apple, you always do the wrong thing.

I'll miss the orange/tangerine shuffle.

I think the new nano will grow on me. Was afraid that it was going to have a plastic outer shell like the old iPods or the M$ zune.

I really like the new iPod Classics what with their metal shells. Been waiting for that ever since the first mini iPods.

Might get a Touch iPod just for the heck of it.

I got an iPhone the day it came out, and today I learned that a new gadget that is virtually an iPhone (sans phone capability and camera) was released. My reaction? Duh! Anyone could clearly see that it was only a matter of (very little) time before an iPod with safari/wifi was released.

But I guess most people are more peeved over the 200 dollar price drop. No, I don't feel "slapped in the face". I don't see how people can say "well I wouldn't be mad if they dropped the price after 6 months, but after just 2?!?! Let's file a class action lawsuit!!!"

Really? Why? Honestly, if when I was getting my iPhone the Apple store employee told me it'd be 200 less in September, I still would've bought the iPhone for 599 right then. That 200 dollars, to me, was just part of the experience of hanging out in line with everyone else, chatting up with fellow Apple fans and having those first couple months to be gawked at in public when talking on the thing! A day I'll never forget, ahhh good times! I'll miss it! *wipes tear*

Just done watching it all, whilst cooking and eating dinner and all that.

I actually found it interesting just to watch how Jobs has everything in control and can give a decent presentation, keeping things hidden until the right time, and is excited by everything. He knows he has awesome products to work with, and it's easy for him - so we can't all translate this into our day jobs!

It's a good stream though, well worth watching. Answers a lot of questions.

Yeah, but the product was just announced today. You don't know if it's accurate or not.

Also, the demand for those things must be AMAZING. I think you would be better off getting it at an Apple Store (if there's one near.)

I noticed that too. But I was glad he wasn't constantly clearing his throat as he has at some past events.

Was it me or did it seem like Steve had someone in the audience as his personal Woo-er, pretty much everything he said he got a woo off the same person!

If the iPhone had been selling as well as they had hoped, there would have been no reason to lower the price. It's quite unusual for any premium product to have it's price slashed so soon after launch. There's no way this was planned.

I think Apple just blinked. Which might be a mistake, because I'm not sure it was the price that was the big issue. The iPhone is simply a very different kind of device whose value is a little tricky to communicate outside the Convinced Crowd (personally I love it and pitch it to everyone I meet). But they have stuck their necks out and have more or less promised Wall Street specific sales numbers, plus they've probably planned to make too many of them, so they're facing an inventory problem. But I guess we'll see: if sales pick up sharply, then it was the right call.

Another interesting thing is that they dropped the 4G model. Another screwup - they're likely to face a lot of disgruntled 4G customers who actually wanted an 8G model that they're likely to need to help.

Nothing fatal about these errors. On balance, iPhone is the right way to go. I wouldn't call it random, but I wouldn't call it flawless execution either.

I love the iPod touch however my biggest problem (and why I probably might have to settle for a iPod Nano) is that this thing is damn hard to control in your pocket. I mean I can still pause skip if a Nano is in my pocket, but for the Touch I would need to constantly remove it from my pocket. Unless Apple develops a nice remote (not the Radio one they have now), I guess I'm stuck with a Nano...:(

Is that a Nano in your pocket or are you happy to see me.....

Well any number of good reasons could exist for the drop and likely do exist...

As I guess I believe the following factors are at play...

1) Apple priced the iPhone high to help control demand during the early release given expectations of demand and supply.

2) Apple wanted to price it high enough to give themselves a way to make the margins they want if cellular carriers in Europe, etc. didn't want to sign up to subsidizing the phone.

3) Apple wanted see what price the market would accept (better to lower prices then raise them).

4) Apple wanted to capitalize on the hype.

etc.

Now that the early release window has passed, Apple has real world sales numbers (likely below what they wanted at the $600 price point), Apple has contracts well under way in Europe, has the iPod touch to help amortize components costs and OS X R&D, competitors are working answers to the iPhone's features/functionality and most importantly Apple wants to hit the holiday season hard with a strong product lineup ... they decided to modify the iPhone pricing.

I think Apple is focused on giving the iPhone and iPod family the best chance to shine this holiday season with aggressive pricing. ...again I don't think it implies that the iPhone is failing in any way (maybe weaker then expected sales wise post release).

Haha yeah I noticed that! And I also thought he was going a bit crazy with the slide animations at the start :D
