Because Windows Media Player is no longer made for mac. Microsoft suggests you download Flip4Mac (It's a QuickTime plug in that allows you to play Windows Media Files). Google it. Also you should google Perian and install that as well. those two things should cover 99% of videos you will want to play.For some reason, I cannot download Windows Media Player 9 from either site Apple & Microsoft. In Apples sent me to an error page and in Microsoft's it just downloads an 2.4kb archive named "WindowsMediaInstaller-1.bin.xhtml"

Right-click in video, save as Quicktime file. Worked for me. Didn't have to go to the iStore... although that would work too..
Maybe they should have taken a bit more to release this.
