Apple has now officially spoken on the matter: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/07/02appleletter.html

A software fix is coming.
Exactly. Just like I said in this very forum. Well. Without being too specific of course :D

Note: I developed a new type of signal strength indicator for the iPhone – using coloration next to signal bars – which clearly showed a huge difference, and because of this I knew that something was wrong / being worked on @ Apple.

The sad thing is if they actually would come out and release an official statement about this whole issue (other than the first 'email' about holding it right) then people would have no need in 'making up' emails about this whole issue. I say keep making up emails and forcing them to deny them until they finally cave in and give a real answer to the whole issue.

And at 5:30 AM PDT, they did.

FWIW- put me down as one of those people who do notice the problem, but also notes that the overall performance of my iPhone 4 greatly exceeds that of the 3G it replaced.

To me, the major issue they need to acknowledge is the proximity sensor. There are TONS of posts about it at the Apple Forums.

This is ********. All they are doing is making the bars increase??? You can do that by jailbreaking it! Oh and NOW they're getting an AT&T formula to calculate bars yet somehow EVERY other manufacture has been able to accurately reproduce signal strength. This is huge copout. It DOESN'T fix the dropped calls i get at my house that DON'T happen with my iPhone 3G. I think I'm going to have to reluctantly return it if something else doesn't come out withing 30 days.

Are you not entertained?

Why are you so emotionally invested in a problem you don't have, wouldn't care if you did have, but get so wound up when people complain about a problem they do have?

Good you you, Yay for Aussieland, if you get a crap iPhone 4 return it, quietly go about your way and leave alone the people complaining about their crappy iPhone 4. Take your own advice, unless you just like to argue about a dog fight in which you plainly state you have no dog.

LOL

Complainers are in no way productive and clog up the fibre optic back bone of the planet.... Fortitude mate, fortitude...!

Emotional investment? bwahahahaha yeah.... Right... OK!
The only emotional investment is entertainment.:D

I'm just typing words son. get over it.

Having a few laughs... if the fish is too small, throw it back mate.

So far I have yet to hear one person that can't replicate the problem in a location where it is legitimate (probably where you get less than perfect reception or some other factor of antenna type/distance in the first place) - show me one example where an iPhone 4 drops out when held over the strip (not even "death grip" tight as you people without problems insist the rest of us are doing) but one next to it won't? You can't. It's a design/software flaw, not a batch or QC issue.

I'm working on doing just this test. I only know of 2 other people right now who have i4s and they both live in another state (near each other though). Of those 2 only 1 can recreate the problem and he got his phone on release day. I'm hoping they will see each other this weekend and do just that test. And, for the one that can create the problem it's really bad. He can go from 5 bars to no signal in < 1 minute. The other guy can't get anything remotely like that to happen even while he's at work which on his iPhone 3G had horrible reception and with the i4 he can make calls fine.

I happened to be out in the country yesterday with anywhere from 2-3 bars of service. I pulled over and did every grip I could think of and couldn't go to no signal. Based on the videos I've seen it should have been easy given that I started with 2-3 bars.

Anecdotes are wonderful things.

Read it again for what? I didn't miss anything. With my 3G i have full bars in my house...now I only have one when I put my finger over the strip. So you really think they were 80% wrong? No. Pull the apple dick out of you ass cause your getting ****ed. I can literally stop an app download at my house by putting my finger over the strip. Software will not fix that.

I want some of what you're having.

Yup, I don't see how a ******** cop-out excuse fixes dropped/poor quality calls where they were not apparent on a 3G... UNLESS the way the bars are reported results in the phone searching for new signal and said drop out - but wait, we were just seeing bars higher than they should be, so the signal was poor in the first place, so it would drop out anyway right? How come my phone shows bars about the same as my colleagues? (just checked) This means I will be showing worse reception than them when it is "fixed" and so the flashy antenna won't be working better?

Bleh, I'm not quite buying this... I think, in reality, an antenna on the outside is a bad idea - which would explain why no other phone company uses this simple solution for better reception.

Yup, I will believe it can vary from phone to phone when I see it - when any of my friends gets an iP4 I will be glad to compare too... Be interested to hear your results. I have 5 bars at work and can not get them to move whatever I do - at home they drop right off. In any case I'm not so worried about bars due to Apple's statement but the call quality and dropped calls - this is the real issue for me. As another poster just said - holding my phone can drop a call or stop a download, that is NOT right and it DOESN'T happen to any other smartphone I've heard of.

Ok so they make the decrease or show "actual" reception. How does that prevent calls from dropping when my finger is over the strip? It's a design flaw. Face it, I love Apple but they ****ed up. Unless they're going to do some other changes then this won't work.

Pay attention, it really is very simple. If you have a phone and you think it is defective or faulty, send it back, get a refund and get on with your life. Anything else is whining and trolling.

lol .. so they are not fixing anything, but at least the phone will tell you when to expect dropped calls :)

way to go Apple.

lol...

And this update also will affect the 3G/3GS... Finally, I'll REALLY know when my signal is weak. Still, this "solution" isn't good enough to purchase a 4 right now. I'll be on the sidelines...

Such a BS

What a load of crap this iPhone 4 is.
Now they're saying that they mis-display the bars, but there is not decrease in signal strength.
Why not just boycott the iPhone 4 alltogether...

As Apple has now officially provided an inadequate response that is exactly what I am doing, thank you very much. :) I'm sorry I insulted Apple, I know it hurts you deeply. I am sorry I was so retarded to think they could do any wrong, of course not they're perfect!

I love everything else about the phone and it was in many ways better than my two previous Apple phones but being unable to make a decent call is not an option in my business - I have no problem with Apple but I am not blind to them being able to make mistakes.

As a consumer of Apple products I am entitled to air my opinions on them in an open forum like this, I didn't want to return the phone because it is a lot of time (=money) and hassle - the O2 shop I bought it from is about 30 minutes drive away, all I wanted was for Apple to fix the problem. Their line is not a fix for the real problem - it's a band aid, many will accept it, good for them (and you). Well done for believing all you are told, you should steer clear of the news or you'll believe we are causing global warming, that we really did walk on the moon and that it was really terrorists that caused 911... ;) (sorry for the sarcasm, I'm just bored of Apple fanboys lately, I only ever said good things about Apple until I got this phone too)

Now I just need to cancel my 24 month contract with O2, I hope they don't take issue with it...

I agree. Its rather insulting that they actually respond to things like this fake email but yet still pretty much ignore the ongoing concerns of their customers.

While I admire your optimism I must ask if you've seen the training document thread?

There was never any training document. Even BGR who created the text we all read (He I might add also brought us the fake emails) does not claim to have seen a document. They simply claim it was related to them by one of their "Apple Connects" for all you know this is the guy who cleans the toilet in their local Apple store (who most likely made a few bucks on the deal).

Even if that document were 100% true (I actually doubt most of it is true), my recommendations are still 100% valid. If people are making decisions about what to do with their iphones based on reports on BGR, they are being lazy and ignorant.

And now you're just continuing to whine, l too can see bars dropping but haven't had lost calls but I am waiting until Wednesday to decide whether to return it to Apple or not. My stance is nothing to do with fanboyism (the traditional retort of the troll and whiner) but simply pointing out that you should be discussing the issue with the only people who can help, the vendor.
