I've questioned it since the beginning, it's not something Apple does by introducing different screen sizes in one launch.

Also take a look at the image in this article.
Image

Look at the distance between the bottom of the screen and the home button on all 3. Using 5s as the control, you can see 4.7 is making use of the available real estate by making things tighter - the screen is closer to the button. This way you keep the actual phone size as small as possible (something Apple does consistently, keeping the phone thinner and smaller). Then you get to the 5.5, and all of a sudden we have extra room to spare? With more distance between the button and the bottom of the screen? Not only that, the button isn't even centered between the bottom of the phone and the bottom of the screen. Apple/Ive/any designer would not allow something as important as the home button to not be centered, especially when there are barely any elements on the front to begin with.

Older straight on shot from this article.

Every single iPhone button is centered between screen and bottom:

it's a mock up not the actual thing geez chill

First, WSJ is not always accurate.
Second, based on this article its a production failure? Usually wrong.
Third, they are ordering 120 million because of failure rate. Come on , give me a break,,,,,

Thats why they call it MacRumors....50% correct and 50% made up.....

Yes, this site is called MacRumors, but the WSJ is not known to be a rumor rag. It's not 100% -- no publication is; even Nostradamus'. But WSJ's editors are not going to put their own credibility (and job) on the line for this kind of story unless there is veracity to it much less put it on the print edition's front page. Especially for a front page story, they are going to vet it until they are satisfied it's solid. If this was a blurb as part of another story deeper inside the print edition then maybe it's vetted less, but front page, no. Too many eyeballs looking at it not to get it right. WSJ is one of the few newspapers that is profitable behind a paywall. They aren't going to squander that for a completely bogus iPhone story.

Kinda how I'm not interested in a small child's toy. ;)

Funny how nobody here cares about women. How about your girlfriend ? Unless she is giant, does she has the same hand size as you ? What size does she want ?

I believe the 4'7" can still be used one handed. For the rest of people who are not bothered about one hand use there is 5.5".

Are you sure about that ? I think there are some who will be able to use the 5.5 with one hand just fine.

5.5" screen and multi tasking should stop most of the Samsung negative ads... until they bring out a 6.5" 'cellphone'.

70 to 80 million at launch time. That is about 1% of all the people alive. We really live in a different world.

I'll be getting the 4.7" iPhone. I prefer portability and discreetness.

So now Apple will sell four phone sizes? The 4S, the 5C (presumably), the 6 - 4.7, and the 6 - 5.5.

One thing is for sure, 4s is out of lineup this year, so the minimum would be a four inch screen (5s / 5c / 5sc) whatever it will be called

I think the 5.5" will sell like the 5c if they're lucky, and the 4.7" will sell like the 5s. I sure hope they still offer a 4" that will fit in my shirt pocket.

Ordering more just to prepare for a high failure rate definitely doesn't make it attractive to me.

The intention isn't to push out defective phone on consumers; that just pisses them off and ruins Apple's aura as a maker of quality products. The goal here is to plan for production of more phones in anticipation of Quality Control at the factory rejecting more phones off the production line than normal.

In this way, if more phones are deemed not suitable for boxing, Apple doesn't experience an inventory shortage because of it. The phone consumers get at the store will be the usual quality Apple product. Of course, every product has a small % of phones that are missed by QC or get damaged during shipment. That part won't change. Some people will end up with defective phones, but likely no more than usual for past iPhones.

As if Apple is obligated to feed the insatiable appetite of people who criticize their every move. Why mention one-handed use in the first place? Every company advertises the positive aspects of their product; a bigger iPhone 6 will be advertised differently than a smaller iPhone 4S or 5.

hmmm, that's a good back pedal. That'll probably appear in the video.

----------

I think they'll say something in the line of "we listened to our customers and met their demands" and will move on without giving a **** about what a few people online think.

----------

Once a while you might want to do some research before posting something like that ;) .

A+ back pedal! Especially since Apple is the company that tells you what you want. Not the company that gives consumers what they ask for. Did the whole Apple mantra change? Eureka!

BS would imply there is zero reason to own a bigger phone? There are many reasons people would want to own a bigger phone.

However, could you imagine a 4.7" iPhone 4 in 2010 - it would've been a brick. Way too think for that size and the amount of glass involved would've made it so heavy too.

Even Android manufacturers have slowly increased screen sizes year by year. They didn't just jump to 5" - as phones have gotten thinner they have slowly gotten bigger too. But that is one of the strengths of Android from the start - because of the way apps scaled it allowed for yearly size increases without devs needing to do any/much work to support new screen sizes. Apple has taken another route. Keeping a stricter set of resolutions and in the long run it has allowed the App Store to flourish. Apps are still mostly launched on iOS first and are generally regarded to be better quality.

Personally I don't want a bigger phone, but looks like if I want to stay with iOS in the future I'm going to have to get a 4.7" minimum. For me it sucks, I like the way I can easily use my 5s with one hand. But there are definitely a chunk of smartphone users (iOS and Android) that have been waiting for a larger iPhone.

Both of you need to stop listening to Apple and Android fanboys and realise in the wider world away from internet forums there are people who want a whole variety of hardware and software. And no one company will meet everyone's needs.

Apple doesn't have to BS anyone, people will buy what they release because it will fit their needs, regardless of what Jonny Ive says. Not to mention they'll probably be selling last years 4.0" models alongside the new batch.

What about 2011, 2012, 2013? Apple was wrong, period. The S series & Note has never been a "brick". Nor the HTC offerings.

Just leave the 5.5" iphone out of the conversation. We all know it's not getting released. Only the 4.7" model for the next 2 years. After that a 5" model for another 2 years and then maybe a 5.5" in 4 years. Why should Apple release 2 models when we all know that the 4.7" will be sold out for months?

Because what you say, periodically increasing screen size would amount to ask developers to update their apps to new size and ratio repeatedly, something Apple can't afford anymore and will be less able than now to afford years from now as the market matures.

"hoping" is always the key..

Can they really in reality ? Probably not. And based on what factors ?

I'm having obsessive compulsive urges to yell, "Get those iPhones off of the ground! This is just disgusting; they're all going to be filthy now!"

Whew, I was almost too late, but now everything is okay… </OCD>

I'm with ya. I never understood glamor shots of devices on rocks, concrete, dirt, etc. The device would get dirty or scratched to hell.

I understand there needs to be room for the button on the bottom, but why such a huge bezel at the top ???

Why not take a design cue from the LG G3 ?

I think Apple wants to keep their signature look.

Then why do they?

Have you any examples of said BS?

I think you're probably referring to marketing and every big company highlights their offerings.

Either that or I may have a different definition of BS to those on this forum using that term. In England it generally means you're lying. What exactly have Apple lied about?

Apple always finds a way to BS its way out of things..... I'm cringing at the thought of his dumb promo video where he back pedals just like the rest of the Apple fanboys. :)

So did you create an account specifically to call everybody here fanboys and iSheep? Because that's what your post history looks like. You really must not like other people using technology you don't prefer, huh? What are you so insecure about?

Am I the only one that wonders if there will be a 6C? Actually that name looks kind of ugly.

Many people with bigger hands like myself look forward to a larger iPhone.
I am 6'0" and this is my hand with my iPhone.

Holy crap we need to get you an iPhone 6 5.5-inch.

hmmm, that's a good back pedal. That'll probably appear in the video.

It's no more of a back pedal than any company that has ever advertised anything has done.

People and companies alike change their priorities. It's a fact of life.

Where is everyone thinking the 5.5-inch doesn't exist now?

I, for one, am right here. Ready for a healthy serving of crow, of course.
But to be fair, back when I was a vocal doubter, I was in very good company: John Gruber, John Moltz and Jim Dalrymple were doubters as well, back then.

And that is because such bold move would not have been part of the "old" Apple strategy, I believe. With Steve at the helm, Apple was a company that did as little as possible to keep customers happy. Of course, with the (waaay) above average quality of their materials, build and design (both hardware and software), that was not very difficult.

Still, this "new" Apple, Tim's and Jony's and Eddie's Apple is proving to be bolder and braver, I believe. I never expected that, and, frankly, I am very happy to see this change.

Gone are the days when Apple could dictate 100% of what customers want and get away with it (and by that I mean be extremely successful, of course). Competition—mainly from Google and Samsung—changed the market, the customers' expectations and the companies' strategies, which is always a good thing for us in line to buy Apple products.

I understand there needs to be room for the button on the bottom, but why such a huge bezel at the top ???

Why not take a design cue from the LG G3 ?

It's a legit question, but one that really can't be answered until the iPhone 6 is released since we don't know what's inside... actually we don't even know if these shells are true to form. The extra room could be for a more sophisticated camera than is in the G3 (no knocking that phone's camera, just suggesting Apple could have something even more advanced). It could be the space is needed for the size of the battery or other internals. I don't think its an issue we armchair designers here can answer right now.

Do any of us know the 5.5" isn't getting released this year? No. Not even you. You can have your hunches, but that's it.

WSJ has considerable contacts. They aren't going to flat out state the 5.5" is coming unless they have it on pretty good information. I'm going to trust their reporting to your hunches. Sorry.

Why would Apple release 2 models? Because Phablets are enormously popular in Asia and Europe and that is where iPhone growth has to come from. The 4" is overwhelmingly popular in the U.S. and a 5.5" isn't going to sell as well here and Apple has to have something new for this market too as the 4" looks stale next to a 5.5".

Bottom line: the 5.5" is Apple's move to really go after Android in the markets were iPhone lags. That's why the need for two new models.

What’s funny about that is that iSteve said the competitors big phones were like skateboards!!

Didn't know about that but I once seen an iPad embedded in a snowboard. With such big phones, you don't need to embed anymore... ...just use the phone as the board :D
