Assuming you said gov't (although you have 4 *'s, so govm't? I don't know), so you realize your license can be cancelled now, like right now right? A cop still checks that your license is valid. The TSA checks that your name isn't on the no-fly list or no travel list. So no difference there. Your ID is cancellable, and so what if the physical card still remains, what do you get out of that, you can buy beers because they don't check your license is valid?
Sure, but venues and retail stores previously haven't had the ability to check if your license is valid, right? So a digital cancellation would be all the more apparent to them.

And yes, in my concern for making a 'political' comment and having it removed, I added one too many *. :)

Well the good thing then is that the physical license doesn't go away, it actually is required to be scanned to get into the Apple Wallet. No one is proposing getting completely rid of the plastic, essentially we still need a physical backup, just like with credit cards or car keys, there's still the physical version, the electronic version just is a more convenient option.

I also haven't encountered too many retail stores that need my ID at all. Only for buying alcohol maybe, or using a check to pay, but usually they don't even take checks any more. To use this they need to have an electronic reader and guard at the doors and they don't usually spend money they don't need to.

Maybe concerts you're thinking of? Or sporting events? Believe me, you have bigger problems if your license is cancelled and you can't get into a concert. Like how you're gonna get home. Either way if you get stopped your license would be checked, so don't get stopped I guess?

Our phones have conveniently eliminated the need to carry around credit cards, keys, medical records, and now IDs. Won't be much longer before some super cool microchip embedded into our bodies eliminates the need to carry around a phone, all in the name of safety and convenience.
Here we go again. Hey, Safeway takes Apple Pay and tin foil is on sale.

If they can put the Driver's License on the iPhone, why not also put the Vaccination(Covid) Certificate?

I’m not seeing that Pennsylvania has opted in or even considering going to digital DL. I don’t even like to let family members use my phone. I certainly wouldn’t want to hand it over to some stranger or police officer, and I’m certainly not going to hand over my AW.

Apple should make this feature available to view/verify on Lock Screen.

Yeah, I think I’ll stick with carrying my DL with me at all times.

So nice to know we can do so much more with a phone now. Apple should go into convenient store business.

Any place that needs to see an ID will need a reader to accept the digital version. Nobody is going to trust some photoshopable picture on a phone as a valid ID. Bars will still be on the hook for serving underage and until they get a reader will need to see the physical card they know how to check for fakes. Colorado app shows the ID with a movable watermark on it and bars and cops just need to see the phone move around and the overlay move with it to prove it is a valid id. Still not universally accepted in Colorado and still need to carry the physical ID.

Wonderful! Desperately waiting for it in Las Vegas, Nevada. Can you imagine how easy it’s going to be to get into nightclubs, casinos, and local bars.
How is this any quicker/Easier than pulling out your ID and showing it? At least if they drop your ID you don't have to worry about the screen/something else breaking.

I don’t have to go through my purse 👛 👜 and search for it. As you said, I don’t have to ever worry about losing my ID. No one has to see my ID card when I’m pulling my purse out or anything. All done via the iPhone.

Because my watch is already out and on my wrist. Why would they be holding your phone to drop it?

As an arizona resident I can't wait
You still have to carry your physical DL. This is straight from AZ DMV website:

Does Mobile ID replace my physical, plastic driver license?
mID is voluntary to use and currently serves as a companion to your physical, plastic ID. Because it is a new technology -- Arizona is one of a handful of states leading the way in making this innovative technology widely available to the public -- you should continue to have your physical ID with you because not all entities are able to verify mobile ID yet. MVD encourages people to always carry their physical ID when driving so it can be used in interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops or incidents. We will continually work with groups to familiarize them with mID and its uses. Over time, we expect mobile ID acceptance to grow.

Nothing good ever happens in a nightclub, casino, or bar, ESPECIALLY not after midnight! You never know who (or WHAT) might follow you home; yikes!
California is the worst.
The sarcasm is strong with this one. <see what I did there?>
I'm sure some cop will find a way to take your phone to the car with him to "run all the checks".
No thanx.
Yeah, my concern too.
It would be convenient for us if physical licenses were replaced with digital licenses, and it would also be easier for the g***t to cancel licenses. Sounds like a good idea, but the CCP may have beat us to the punch here.
"gubmt", right?
OK I'll give the cop my phone locked, screen off. What's that, he wants it unlocked? OK, then bring over the reader so I can tap it and authenticate it, then he gets the license info on his screen. What's that? He wants to have the phone unlocked? That's not how it works, I have to tap it to the reader for him to get the info, otherwise it won't authenticate without my face. What's that? He doesn't care about my license he just wants to take my phone and steal my bank account? OK hold on, I'm calling the state attorney general's office. Either he doesn't or he's going to prison.
Too complicated. If you get the wrong cop, he'll just throw you in the grey-bar motel for the night anyway WITHOUT your phone.
I look forward to eventually being able to ditch my bulky wallet case... hopefully sometime before I die of old age (which is creeping inexorably closer...). :p

On the plus side - at least wallet cases for phones are a thing.
Bulky wallet? remove some of the junk from it!
If they can put the Driver's License on the iPhone, why not also put the Vaccination(Covid) Certificate?
Why not just put it all on a chip and staple it to your ear like they do your boxer, rat-terrier, or snickerdoodle? Seems easier and more in line with how they treat us anyway. Woof!
I thought IDs were... oh, what's the word...
Disenfranchising? There, I said it. ;)

I am not the type to claim that smart phones are the mark of the beast like some radicals... but they certainly are doing their best to play the role, aren't they? I mean, at this point, it's pretty clear that Apple and Samsung (among others) are doing their best to make these things indispensable to the extent of them becoming a necessity. It's kind of scary.

Fascinating that Apple's home state, California, isn't on the list. I wonder if they are working with China on something and what it's feature set will be?

And now you'll leave a digital trail including your name, DoB, and potentially your address (if their reader requests it) everywhere. I'd rather just have a person look at the physical ID.
