I have my Florida Smart ID, although they are not promoting yet. They have stated they are looking to be part of the Apple Wallet, may not be at first though.

Even when this becomes widely adopted everywhere, I’ll always carry the physical card to hand over for for situations like this. No way I’m gonna hand over my phone to anyone that’s going to walk out of my view with it.

100% agreed. Seems too obvious though, so I wonder if Apple is considering that sort of situation and a way to access the Driver's License without the rest of the phone. Kind of how you can use the camera in the lock screen but not have access to the phone's photo library.

I'd still use a physical card, but that would be some wonderful (and necessary imo) attention to detail.

OK I'll give the cop my phone locked, screen off. What's that, he wants it unlocked? OK, then bring over the reader so I can tap it and authenticate it, then he gets the license info on his screen. What's that? He wants to have the phone unlocked? That's not how it works, I have to tap it to the reader for him to get the info, otherwise it won't authenticate without my face. What's that? He doesn't care about my license he just wants to take my phone and steal my bank account? OK hold on, I'm calling the state attorney general's office. Either he doesn't or he's going to prison.

What’s that?

I'm sure some cop will find a way to take your phone to the car with him to "run all the checks".
No thanx.

But why would the officer need to take the phone? They could just take a picture of the license. Or there might be a QR code on the license they could scan.

Cops will have a reader (QR code is used in Colorado) and won't need to physically touch your phone, nor do they want to. Once they get your license number they will get your record from the state database and won't need to do anything more than verify the picture is of you. Which they will get from the state database so they don't even need to see the license picture on your phone.

When I setup my license on the mycolorado app I didn't need to take a picture of my actual license. After verifying my identity using the camera they downloaded the license to the app directly. Apple will likely do something similar.

to add: Actually, in Colorado, you scan with the app a QR code the cop presents to you. The app tells the state database to send the info to the cop. Cop doesn't even see the license on the phone. If this doesn't work - that is the reason we still need to carry the physical license.

It will not display info or transfer data if not wearing your mask, of which tech is also updated in this beta. j/k

Our phones have conveniently eliminated the need to carry around credit cards, keys, medical records, and now IDs. Won't be much longer before some super cool microchip embedded into our bodies eliminates the need to carry around a phone, all in the name of safety and convenience.
And a cellular AW replaces the phone without the need to embed anything under the skin. That's as far as I will go.
It's bad enough we have to fork out $300 to $400 for a new watch every few years for new features. I can't imagine how much it would cost to upgrade something implanted under the skin.

Congrats to Apple for making a time piece a planned obsolescence disposable device.

P.S. Still waiting for AW video calling to finally deliver a Dick Tracy watch.

Minnesota was one of the last states to adopt Real ID so I won’t be surprised if we take for ever to support digital drivers licenses.

You still have to carry your physical DL. This is straight from AZ DMV website:

Does Mobile ID replace my physical, plastic driver license?
mID is voluntary to use and currently serves as a companion to your physical, plastic ID. Because it is a new technology -- Arizona is one of a handful of states leading the way in making this innovative technology widely available to the public -- you should continue to have your physical ID with you because not all entities are able to verify mobile ID yet. MVD encourages people to always carry their physical ID when driving so it can be used in interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops or incidents. We will continually work with groups to familiarize them with mID and its uses. Over time, we expect mobile ID acceptance to grow.
That's fine but i'll just leave it in my car. I don't need it in a wallet anymore and i don't need to carry my wallet after this change

Some folks are working very hard to see scenarios where the officer takes their phone away in order to search it for incriminating information. But the way the law has been set up in many (all?) of the places that have digital ID, the officer would be breaking the law if they took your phone away, regardless of the pretext, and could be prosecuted for it. And that’s a problem with cops doing illegal things, not big brother looking at your phone.

And we already have police doing illegal things often, including beating and killing people, choking people to death, breaking into homes and shooting innocent people for… sitting on their own couch in their own house. The problem isn’t “big brother is coming after my phone”, the problem is “we have some dirty cops on some police forces and we are not doing enough to get rid of them” (and often police forces and police unions close ranks around them and protect them, the same way churches do around priests that turn out to be rapists and pedophiles - the desire to protect their tribe overrules any sense of law or decency).

If the only people you expect to need the ID for is cops for traffic stops you can do that now. Otherwise you'll still need to carry your physical ID for the places that don't have the readers which, for a long time, will be most places.

If you look well over 21, chances of needing to regularly show an ID (liquor sales) is very rare anyway and the places that do require it from everyone might have the readers. Nobody is going to trust a photoshopable picture on a phone as a valid ID.

come on South Carolina. Also Passport and TSA and the like. Abolish the physical wallet!
In my experience, I have never had a physical card like a license fail or threaten my privacy. Im good with physical cards.

I draw the line there. When a micrprocessor or implant connected in any way to a microprocessor be the norm and there is no impedance or restriction from me being able to use my god given & born capabilities, no I will not choose this.
