Buy fixing a bug that causes uncontrolled loops that burn through a charge. It's not all software that is causing this. They can target specific code.

Also, it's worth mentioning that early software releases may well not be optimal. In my programming days, we'd get stuff working and later go through the code with a fine tooth comb to implement optimisations where necessary. An inappropriate algorithm here and there can greatly increase the number of CPU cycles and, therefore, heat.

I was looking forward to buying a new ip15, but that plan has now been canceled.
So someone else will get the phone you would have gotten and it's a good chance that they would not see any heating. Many of us only saw heating on the day the phone was setup and it has been cool since then. If this patch goes out and fixes the issue, then all the phones will run normally. It's not like all phones are suddenly turning into a George Foreman grill.

I really do hope its a good fix, I haven't updated to iOS17 yet because my iPhone runs so well on iOS16 :/
My opinion is there’s no need to update as long as your apps still work. I’m still on iOS 15. It is a fact at this point that iOS updates slowly degrade the performance and battery life of devices. I’ve seen it personally for ten years. So don’t rush into it if your phone works fine now. People talk about security etc. but just use common sense and don’t visit shady websites.

It is always better to update but you don't need to rush, just wait a week or two to have the first big fixes and app updates.
Waiting a week or two before updating puts you right here and now as iOS 17 was released two weeks ago on Sep 18, 2023. Users are no better off upgrading today than if they upgraded on day one.

Again, it's best to wait until the x.3 release.

Is there a kernel process that crashes that causes the CPU usage to spike, thus increasing temps, and using more power/battery life than would otherwise be necessary ?

I don’t see how it’s a software issue because some phones are fine running the same current software

They said certain third-party applications are triggering it when paired with iOS 17. Which lines up with what Marquees Brownlee said in his video, he noticed the phone got really hot during his use of Instagram doing light tasks like scrolling through the feed.

Apple hasn't released details of the bug fix that they plan to make. It's not clear if the bug is in the OS or in the apps that have been associated with phones that are getting hot. (Not all phones are doing so.)

Will it fix my 14P from overheating, too? For the first time, my phone stopped charging until the temp went back down (paraphrasing). Starting charging at 68%, 70F and usb. It’s not just the 15.

Ok. So if I download those apps and use them like they do, I should be able to duplicate the issue? Is anyone getting a hot phone without using those apps?

One question I have is, is the phone actually *OVER*heating? Or is it just getting hotter than previous models which is freaking people out?

Frankly I'd rather my phone get warm and perform better than to run a bit cooler and run slower. As long as it's operating within the thermal limits of the hardware, have at it!
on wireless chargers, yes, overheats and stops charging, as far as let it run warm and fast, my issue is, it overheats on simple phone calls and drains battery faster than a 2% a minute, the longest hot phone call I could see I would be able to achieve is less than an hour, so they have to do something here... although a phone call should never be crushing the CPU like it is at the moment nor should charging, so maybe it is just a bug and they won't throttle

How can you fix overheating with a software update? By throttling the the CPU?
There are plenty possible software solutions for overheating. For example, imagine a scenario when app like Instagram is loading video after video for your feed using 100% power of performance cores. It could be done by efficiency cores (because you are not able to watch all the videos at once) and user experience would not be harmed. But such mechanisms are not controlled by the app itself; it is controlled by OS. It's just optimization.

I've had every iPhone that Apple has released, especially the Pros. The consistent thing I have observed on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with overheating has been when using the Phone app itself. Whenever I am on a phone call, the phone gets quite hot and the battery really starts to drain -- fast. Once I am off a call, then it seems to cool off and the battery drain also seems to adjust accordingly. My guess is that the new Phone app interface they intro'd in iOS 17 may have some bugs that and I hope Apple fixes with this new update. I don't doubt other apps also appear to cause overheating issues, but in my case the consistent issue I have seen is with the Phone app itself.

I still think that its apps not optimized for the new hardware and IOS17 that is causing this. I have seen some odd app behavior on my 12Pro. My wife has the 15pro and it doesn't get all that hot. She doesn't use IG or Facebook though.
