I bought an iPod there 8 years ago. Never again. I live very close to KoP and I avoid it like the plague. That whole town is going to sink one day.

Anyway yeah, Apple could triple the size of their KoP store and it might still not be enough. That place is always stuffed to the gills. Had a few friends that worked there over the years and I heard some great horror stories.

YES. KOP is without a doubt one of the ********* malls in the US! Only half the stores in the place are actually open at a given time!

The Apple Geniuses are great. They are good for more than just Apple support. They helped me write my master's thesis and my doctoral dissertation in molecular biology. I have been applying to get a job in the Apple Store at Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City (Working in their Cancer Research Department), however, they want me to do some postdoctoral work or get a degree in particle physics to supplement my current education.

I will say, the math and foreign language portions of the Apple Standardized Intelligence Tests were the most challenging tasks of my life.

Note: I understand, Apple has changed it's policy and anyone holding a Nobel Prize in any field is automaticly granted a position in an Apple retail store, however, they must work their way into a position as a creative or Genius. This may be the easy way to go.

You are my hero! Thanks for the laugh!

I don't think it's necessary for any of you to be speaking to one-another like this. This is a tech forum; personal attacks derived from our passion for or against these products is not what this space is here to provide. Collaboration and discussion is what it's about. Attack the brand and the products, not each-other or his/her ethics.

Exactly. The discussion being referenced is exactly why I post so seldom...

Never understood the fascination with a big empty room containing rows of plain tables with Apple stuff on them.

What's so cool about an Apple store ?
You can get all that stuff online without hassle.

Is it the clueless inept jokers at the " genius" bar who never really offer a good solution other than buying newer Apple crap because they haven't the slightest clue as to how to actually fix a problem?

Is it the over priced accesories that will be obsolete in a year ?

Is it the hordes of people who stand in line for something that they could just as easily order online ?

I don't get it.

The Apple store is boring as hell

... having said that though...

Mr Gates,

I don't condone the way the first negative response was given to you, but anyone who decides to read your whole post can clearly see you are fishing for it and then acting surprised when it happens.

If you were truly on the moral high ground that you claim, then all you had to do is say "What do Apple users find most useful about the stores?" I suspect though that engaging in productive product related discussion was not what you came here for...

Let's try that next time!

At first I read, "Apple is expanding to space", and then I re-read it and was disappointed :(

I thought they were going to space also...

I wanted to buy a mac on the moon.. The Dark side of the moon...

oh well, I can do that when im out of reality.

But I had more to say than that and provided some valid points.
I also wanted to express my opinion of this zombie like obsession with the Apple store and why it makes no sense to me. It IS related to the discussion even if you don't agree with my point of view.

Furthermore , I will NOT phrase my questions as you would. You don't get to decide what I have to say or how to say it. If you want to ask a stupid question like that, go right ahead.

I'll be me and you be you. We will respect each other's individuality and you will no longer try to put words in my mouth.

Let's try that next time!

Mall of America

There is a mall bigger than Mall of America!?

Mall of America has the most square footage. King of Prussia has the most leasable retail space. It is much larger but it is in multiple buildings. Lets put it this way when you approach the 202 you see a sign "shopping mall next 4 exits".

----------

Never understood the fascination with a big empty room containing rows of plain tables with Apple stuff on them.

What's so cool about an Apple store ?

1) Terrific area where you could sit comfortable and try new Apple products and a range of software. On a weekday before EOW they used to not be so busy so you could take a kid there for two hours and kill a morning.

2) A range of accessories that very hard to picture online. Best place to shop for accessories.

3) Easy access to service technicians.

When I go to Apple Stores, it's for one of three reasons:

1. To try out the new hardware or software so I can make my own decisions about purchases and upgrades, and to stay informed on the latest Apple products, since I help a lot of Apple product users. Sometimes I make purchases, sometimes I'm just test driving.

2. To ask for technical help. The salespeople or geniuses can help me more often than not. Sometimes their advice is spot on, sometimes it's correct but isn't helpful because it's already published on the Apple website, and occasionally they've given me inaccurate information. I take it for what it's worth, since most of the time they have a suggestion, know a trick, or come up with a solution that solves my problem.

3. For an event. I've been to a couple of store openings or gone to see a store because of the location or architecture. Being an Apple fan, I consider that fun.

First of all, it's not an empty room. They're usually pretty full of people. :p

It's easier to do certain things in person. You can assess the fit and finish of manufactured products much better in person than just looking at pictures on a website or looking at specs. Anyone can look at specs online and read the dimensions, weight, etc., but it's difficult to really understand how they will feel in your hands.

For things like display performance, user interface responsiveness, tactile resistance (of buttons, etc.), heft, balance, build quality, speaker performance, ergonomic design, there's really no way to assess these just looking at a few pictures online or reading through a spec sheet.

It sounds like you have purchased very few consumer electronics in your life.
I don't get it.
Yes. Quite.

There is a mall bigger than Mall of America!?

Mall of America is more like a Circus/Theme park than a mall.

if you pay attention "by leasable square feet" it is the largest mall in america and it is 30 years old.
I am from Valley Forge which connects to King of Prussia and it is BIG, very big.
Having roller coasters and other elements not comprising a shopping mall allows reporters of low intelligence that it is the "largest mall in america" when it is just "something large"

The space Apple had in the KOP mall was small for the foot traffic the mall sees each day

----------

Kop mall is two buildings connected with a walkway so they don't consider it bigger that the mall of America. But it has more square footage.

Please explain who "they" is.

Mall of America has 2,779,242 square feet, and KOP mall has 2,793,200.

The square feet of Mall of America has included Nickelodeon Universe Amusement Park & SEA LIFE Minnesota which EASILY makes up the difference and then some.
King of Prussia mall opened in 1963 and Mall of America opened in 1992. KOP mall has build SOME additions where the overwhelming majority of MOA was built at one time.
KOP mall does not have it's own Aquarium nor a Theme park complete with Roller coaster(indoors)
Wikipedia still lists KOP as the largest but the #1 position goes between the 2 on whatever source you are looking at.
For me and anyone with common sense, a Theme park and Aquarium are just that, and not considered common Mall attractions.
Also the age of the 1963 KOP mall should also stand for something as the MOA is a mere baby compared

----------

Kop mall is two buildings connected with a walkway so they don't consider it bigger that the mall of America. But it has more square footage.

The reason the KOP mall has a walkway about 200' between the two main buildings is because when the second section was proposed in the late 1970's the Fire code would not allow a building at the time to be build due to fears of customers not having enough time to get out of the main heart of the building.

There are underground service connections for water, sewage, electric and even for utility vehicles to go between the 2 buildings so they are quite connected.
When you are building a 500million structure and the fire department & insurance companies are telling you your building is just too big to for safe exit during a fire, you just move the proposed building 200' over to allow for parking and and exit staging area.
Also think about emergency services, it is much easier to enter a building and reach the center of a 1500' wide building than a 3000' wide building.
Anyone who has been there a few times would tell you they are thankful it is split in 2 because it would be forever to just get to the store you want to visit and get out, it would be an all day affair.

Sawgrass in florida is mostly a single level that is an enormous loop so it is easy for customers to exit safely.

I generally avoid Apple stores, as they're are crammed with teenagers most of the time, and the workers assume everyone's a newbie.

The problem with always going to bigger stores is that Apple is setting itself up for embarrassment when some day in the future they finally have to downsize a store.

At a certain point, if Apple doesn't start buying competitors like Toshiba, it will experience shrinkage.

K of P is not bad from a consumer's point of view, but I've heard retailers complain about cronyism and raw deals. In fact I've heard the same about another mall in the area, Granite Run. But to be fair... there is also cronyism and conspiracies to rig prices on quaint little Main Streets, it's just less reportedly.

"West Edmonton Mall (WEM), located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is the largest shopping mall in North America and the fifth[1] largest in the world. .... It was the world's largest mall until 2004.

West Edmonton Mall covers a gross area of about 570,000 m2 (well over 6 million sq ft). There are over 800 stores and services and parking for more than 20,000 vehicles. More than 23,000 people are employed at the property. The mall receives 28.2 million visitors per year; it also attracts between 60,000 and 150,000 shoppers daily, depending on the day and season. " From Wikipedia.

Leasable space is 3,800,000 sq ft. The WEM received approval to add another 320,000 sq ft of retail space in 2002, but has not yet started construction. Among other things, the WEM has an NHL sized ice rink, and a water park complete with wave pool and bungee jump.

This is what makes me miss the down vote button...

Expand the Apple Store at Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, MI. Then expand the Apple Store at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, MI. Oh, and open an Apple Store that's actually IN Detroit. I hate it when I drive two hours to spend a day in Detroit, and I decide to visit an Apple Store for fun. Then I have to drive another 30 miles west on M-10 (where traffic can be bad sometimes), and I-696 to Novi. Then I'll be happy.

:p

It's obvious that you don't get it because I don't know of a single Apple store in the country that isn't crowded almost all the time. Even in smaller venues, like the Christiana Mall in Wilmington, DE about 45 miles south of KoP they had to move to quarters almost twice as large as their old one and they're still so crowded you can hardly move in there. That simple, open layout tries to make room for all those customers and yet when you make more room, more people come in and fill it up.

And don't go saying they're all just Window Shopping, either; during an hour that I was waiting for the Genius Bar to install a new hard drive (bigger) in my iMac Extreme a couple years ago, I saw no less than 10 computers come out the door and an almost uncountable number of iPods, iPads and iPhones. Those places are busy and they're still the most profitable operation per square foot of retail space in the world.

But I had more to say than that and provided some valid points.

To be respected, you must earn respect; your comments do not earn you any respect. You are combative and abusive then pretend to be insulted when someone confronts you with this observation. Such activity is obvious trolling with the intent to hijack a discussion with a flame war.

who cares about retailer experiences...?

KOP knows they have heave heavy traffic and if a retailer doesn't want to pay a price then they can leave the KOP mall.

KOP takes care of parking, maintenance, and advertisement.

and honestly, you speaking out about "reportedly" is like spreading rumor which is not very intelligent. Come to the table with facts not hear-say

Nonsense !

Your view is biased and false.

I don't have to "earn" respect from you or any other anonymous person on the internet.

I also do not have to Kiss the ass of Apple to be here and have an opinion.

So quit with the BS.

If anything, it's Apple fanatics bullying me for being an independent thinker.

Absolute nonsense.

"Oh, he doesn't like the Apple store and has explained why in detail .....GET HIM !!!!!"

"Burn him at the stake"

Some of you have such warped minds it's actually quite sad

Mall of America is slightly smaller than the King of Prussia Mall in terms of retail space. The building is actually much larger though because it includes the worlds largest indoor amusement park, aquarium, full mini golf course, and a school. Even with all of these giant activities it still has more stores than the King of Prussia Mall. The King of Prussia Mall has about 400 stores where as Mall of America has about 520.

You say that you gave detailed reasons for not liking the Apple Stores. But you didn't. There's nothing detailed here. It's just a rant. A lot of people here, and elsewhere, have been extremely pleased with the service that they've had from the Genius Bar. If you haven't, I'd suggest that either your attitude got in the way, or you asked a question which was, actually, beyond them to answer. It happens to all experts sometimes. But to tar them all with the same brush is a bit extreme... I'll support what someone else said as I've never been sold anything in an Apple Store - and yet they really are the most successful retail areas anywhere.

Are accessories overpriced? Yes. Fair enough. Go get them from somewhere else - like the internet.

And no, I don't get standing in line for something I know I want and can order from my phone in a coffee queue.

But I don't find the stores boring. I find them invaluable for trying stuff out without any pressure whatsoever to buy.

You told someone to respect your view and said you'd respect theirs. If you'd phrased your view in a way that indicated that it was simply that - your own personal view - and not used troll-like inflammatory words and insulting generalisations, maybe people would respect your view. There are plenty of discussions on here where people explain how they feel about something without creating a battle of personal insults.

You say that you don't have to earn respect from anonymous people. But you certainly seem to take it personally when you don't get it!

I hope, for your sake, that it's only your internet, anonymous, persona that acts like this, because if you're like this in the real world too I feel really sorry for the people you interact with on a daily basis. And please don't respond that everyone in your world loves and respects you - because from your performance on here most people will simply believe that you've bullied them into it.

I live 5 minutes away from that mall. I always thought the space they occupied was way too small; it's regularly packed and a pain to get from one end of the store to the other (though I guess that's a common theme at many stores), but really, their current location is tiny in comparison to many of their other stores. And for a mall of that size and traffic? They definitely need a bigger showing.
