After all these years of making laptops, excuse me, notebooks, they still have problems making plastic cases for them that don't crack after a few months. What about a MacBook case that lasts for more than 3 monts? I don't care much about the hardware on the inside except for the combo drive you still find in their $999 laptop

Interesting, my brother has had his laptop for over 6 months. Continuously movement back and forths from university - not a single crack or warp. I guess he is an iWitch(tm)

Finally, a little bit more info on the refresh. I think August 4th will be the release date, and it's about time! I can't wait to get my new macbook for college :)

My 3+ year-old iBook G4 has a really solid plastic case that has never had a problem. The same goes for my 12 year-old Powerbook 1400cs. So I would say that it's not that they can't make them . . .

A large proportion of sets sold today and in the last few years are 42" and up. You won't see a huge difference in the sub 40" screens (your HD set at 32" would most likely be a 720p only set - or is it a CRT at 1080i?) but in the larger screens the resolution makes a real difference.

The Sony Bravia 32" is a 720p or 1080i LCD set.

Edit: I still don't know if 720p is better than 1080i...can anyone tell me? Tks.

If it was still in warrenty or if you had your applecare - I would bring it back. If my MP case cracks, I'm bringing it back.

Whats wrong with the two finger click? Put two fingers on your pad and press the button - voila, you have a right click. I've got it enabled now (can be done via the system preferences) and I can assure you that I'd rather that then having two buttons.

Maybe its me. i tried the two fingered click, and found I sometimes get different results than I get with the mouse. I will go back and look at my preferences again.......

I was a bit luckier, since my first computer was an Apple //e clone with green phosphor monitor, a 5 1/4" DD and 256Kb of RAM...but I must admit having lots of fun with cassette games used in a friend's ZX Spectrum clone, or with another friend's MSX clone...good ol' days! :)

Oh I remember that one. Classic

No Apple (or any other brand) laptop that I have ever owned cracks. Users tend to break them though. I think people need to stop blaming computer makers for the misuse of their machine. PCs and Apple laptops are quite strong, with the exception of plain old "heavy use."

This article sounds like any other rumored one, "Apple plans on updating soon in the near future..." Duh. I still think it will be after back to school. Either way, redesign the book, don't make the PRO consumer-ish, make it professional, and DON'T put the MacBook keys on the Mac Book Pro please! Or I will have to mod them back in there.

Or they'll tell you they have no information regarding future updates...;)
Wouldn't you think Apple might want to clear 60 "old-top-of-the-line" MBP first?

If you call apple or go to an apple store, they tend to not tell you anything until the actual release date/time. some claim ignorance, and others tell you strait out that Apple does not tell them until close to the official date/time then they are under the do not disclose right down to the second.

I had a friend who worked for a reseller (Compusa, now out of business) when I was in the market and it was getting close to something - he would say. Maybe you need to really think about your needs for a few days :p

Ha ha! That was my very first computer!

10 print "the OS still wipes the floor with windows";
20 goto 10;

hehe. It's like I can actually feel the keypad depressing under my fingers, knowing I did not press the shift key hard enough.

True, I like the finish, but dang if they don't scratch easy though.

What do you base that on? Blu-ray adoption is exceding the rate of DVD adoption in the same period since its introduction in 1997.
As you say, you're not in the US, but everytime you go into Best Buy lately the BR section is growing larger. The retailers are working to create that ecosystem. Studios are putting exclusive features on the BD versions of things, even though, as you say, they continue to put out DVDs.
I suppose that's down to the crowd you know. I'm probably biased knowing so many film people, but even my Mom, who still uses VHS on a semi-regular basis saw BD in the Costco and started talking about getting one.
1 and 4 - the BD player would replace the DVD player, same # of inputs you'd need now. and how many people actually have an :apple:tv? Outside of this forum I mean. I've never seen one. I know more people that still have laserdisc players than have :apple:tvs.
2 - see my point above
3 - The discs are more expensive now, but the studios are starting to come down. Warner Brothers has started reducing prices for catalog titles to $11 for retailers for example, which would lead to around $15 in store - same as an average catalog DVD. If you shop online you can find lower prices for discs generally as well. Entry level players are available here in the states for $300, at Wal-Mart and Costco etc. BR read only drives are available for $150 or less if you have your pc connected to your TV.

Hey, I agree with you 100% BullMooseFilms.

Where I live Blu-ray is taking over. I don't know how these posters can even think that upscale DVD or HD AppleTV comes anywhere close to the experience of true 1080p and dolbydigital or uncompressed 5.1.

Besides AppleTV is a flop. Sales are dismal. Apple is having a hard time getting HD content. Bandwidth issues and slow internet connections make the AppleTV experience a pain in the US. Plus movie downloads may go the way of the dodo bird once ISP's begin charging per MB rather than capping unlimited plans.

Blu-ray is here to stay. It is spreading to all new competitive laptop vendors, Dell, Sony, Lenova, etc.

Apple has never taken a stance against Blu-ray nor has Steve Jobs, so this is just FUD. Apple will most definitely provide support directly in OS X for Blu-ray, will provide BTO options for MacPro, and may even offer BTO options for MBP. I think the jury is still out on the usefulness of a Blu-ray drive in a laptop, due to the limited screen size, resolution, and power drain.

What about making the current MacBook Pro keyboard black at least?

Nope - first.

But what I want to know is when the G6's are coming out! G5's are really old I thought. I bet a G6 could run hot enough to keep you from being able to father children...

I just so happen to live in the same town as Motorola HQ - I'll run down there and see what I can find out :D

They'll never be able to get the G6 into a PowerBook! ;)

I'd agree that none of the plastic Apple MB's or ibooks that I have bought for business or family have ever cracked.

However the Aluminum MBP and TI PB have cracked and it was not due to abuse. The old TI PB's tended to develop cracks along the hinge mount area because there was an issue with the hinges being overly tight.

The first gen AL MBP had many users report cracking of the case on the underneath side originating from the battery compartment. Many of my business laptops developed these cracks.

Of course most of the aluminum MBPs will crack if dropped more than 3 feet off the ground onto a solid floor but I think that would fall into the abuse category.

In a word, gross.

It has been done on other models, and I am not too pressed about a different looking keyboard for the sake of being different, but sure only as long as it stays the same curved shape that cradles your fingers as you type.

And not the square God awful, can't use with a keyboard cover, consumer, keys that the MB users tend to love, and the wireless keyboard is cursed with.

I agree Digital Biker, there are issues with the cases, for me and the books I have seen and used, it's the grey border around the top and bottom casing, or the unevenness of the casing near the battery. There have been reports of just plain old cracking, but it isn't wide spread or a flaw like some people (that have probably owned/used only one laptop ever) make it out to be.

My MacBook Wish List:

*Aluminum and or Stainless Steel (Make it pretty, not plastic)
*Metal keys too, if possible, or if not, black keys
*SuperDrive across the board (that combo model is low priced bait, and Bluray is not necessary for me or most people I think)
*a GPU (I don't know about them, just something so that stacks and spaces don't lag and stutter so gosh darn much)
*a quieter cooling system
*Bright LED screen covered in glass
*Dramatically smaller bezel around the screen and keyboard
*Higher MP iSight (2 MP, or at least enable it if it already is 2 MP as i've heard from some)
*Thinner if possible and doesn't make it overheat

I'll put it this way, if Apple comes out with a Black anodized MBP that is a pound lighter, has a 150GB HDD drive and a SATA 128GB SSD drive, latest discrete GPU and IGPU switch, Montevina Platform with faster FSB, faster memory, faster memory controller, new extreme power saving options with shutdown idle mode, a new high-res led backlit display then Apple will have my credit card purchase in seconds and the least of my concerns will be case cracking.

Dude, STOP reading my mind! :D

Macbook Air

Why havent there been many comments on a Macbook Air refresh? Recent price drops for the SSD and the refurbished model could be hints of something in the works here?

Hey let's throw in a BTO blu-ray drive just to keep everyone happy!
