This is just another thing that really makes me think we won't see any external form factor changes this summer. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that Apple will definitely be sticking with the current form factor until 2012.

Ouch. That's really unfortunate. Surprising that one of Apple's own accessories did that. You'd think that they would have taken that into consideration. Was there any dirt on the inside of the bumper?

Yeah no kidding. There was dirt that got into it yes. But that's why I thought the gasket was supposed to keep dirt from getting in. And every time you take the bumper off, it makes it even more loose...allowing more dirt to get in. It's a rip off product.

That's absolutely not true. All phones do not suffer from the death grip. That's just blatantly wrong information.

Wrap enough human flesh around the right area on any cell phone, especially the antenna area, and it will hamper reception. Again, the AT&T iPhone 4's problem was that it was so easy to do with a finger tip.

Remember Apple's videos showing other phones dropping bars? They illustrated that by wrapping the whole phone in a giant human hand. Death grip, hulk grip, whatever you want to call it. It happens because something is blocking reception.

Then again, perhaps I'm wrong and Apple is also full of crap. Some phones work flawlessly despite gorilla hands covering them. Here's PC mag absolutely covering a Droid, BB, and others and the signal is fine:

I'm willing to bet these tests vary by network performance in the area.

Oh Great.

As soon as I take my iPhone out of the bumper to check for scratches and debris, I drop the dang thing on the floor.

uhhh it looks exactly the same.

Doesn't look larger at all.

Look at the distance between the dock connector cut out, and the speakers beside it. The dock cut out does appear larger. I'll buy the updated bumper just so the older cables will fit again. It's insane that Apple didn't bother testing the original bumper case with older cables (including some of their own older cables!).

bumbers?

i thought the bumper was no longer needed; the technical issues were resolved?

The antenna isn’t/wasn’t the only issue. They’re needed for anyone who wants a protective case for the phone. Of course they can get a case from a third party as well.

I like the bumper. It was free* and I think looks good. I like it also becasue I think the phone is slippy and the bumper makes it grippy. The irony of it all (as far as protection goes) is that the only times I’ve ever dropped the phone is when it’s out of the bumper.

*Free ultimately for AT&T users when the phone came out. Who knows yet whether the antenna redisign for the Verizon phone is really an improvement. If it is then it's a matter of Apple raking in some more $$ for offering their own case.

Some other considerations are that by Apple making a bumper for the Verizon phone, if the Verizon phone is indeed free of antenna issues, Apple is subtly stating that there never was a problem with the AT&T phone. They’re saying, hey here’s our case, buy it if you like it. Anyway, redesigning the bumper to make it universal makes sense as far as manufacturing and not confusing the consumer goes.

trivial/nonsense/superflous piece of information

A REVOLUTION, happening
one bumper at a time!

It's magic.

So much better than my existing one. I better go get this.

I dont like the rubber break in the plastic band on the headphone jack portion of the case. It stretches easily. They should continue the plastic band all the way around so the bumper stays stiffer and fits the phone more snuggly.

Also I want a red bumper :)

Holy crap people... put the orgasms on hold as you marvel at the orifices in this thing. It's just a freaking bumper.

I don't even know why this is of interest to anyone unless they plan on owning both iPhone versions.

Nevermind... I'm sure that will happen.

It's of interest to Verizon customers who have yet to receive their iPhones. Obviously, it's probably not very important to current iPhone users. These are one of the few announced accessories that are confirmed to be compatible with the Verizon iPhone 4.

IMO, they def moved the button to not allow the new phone to get the "hand me down" bumpers. Now they made a new one, ppl will have to purchase the new style if they want one for the ViPhone. Very smart for them to recoup some money on it. (From a business perspective)
As mentioned a bit above, there is no way they added (and paid for the addition) manufacturing lines for the phone hardware just to earn a bit more on a couple new bumpers. Simple subtraction would prove that a bad business decision, if you had access to the numbers.
I understand that that's what they are saying, but how does the one case fit both when the volume buttons are lower on the verizon one?
They aren't different, the mute button is higher.
Actually I take quite good care of my stuff. Why should I have to remove the bumper every week to clean the inside of the case? Ever notice the hard plastic interior of the bumper case? That mixed with debris causes the scratches. A soft interior would remedy that problem.

I have usually had cases on all my phones. (mainly to protect them a bit from falls) All of them got 'stuff' inside. That is what happens. One of the worst things is oil from YOU. People secrete stuff. I guess if you didn't understand that, you should by now. This is a case/phone issue, not Apple or the iPhone specifically. Don't use a case if you can't handle how they function.

Similar for cameras, glasses, iPods, and everything else I have ever kept in a case.

ok, In some of the pics like the one below, it looks like the volume buttons are off too, Maybe it's just the angle

Looks wider to me. Look at the height of the slot and the curvature around the sides. That will be just enough room to fit the old-school Apple dock cables that shipped with many of the original iPod mini and iPod nanos. It may fit a greater percentage of 3rd party connectors as well.

I'd hate to ditch my current case (not a scratch on it), but if this keeps me from having to take the case off to plug in to my Mazda iPod car kit, I'm buying it!

The "free" bumper won't work as well for Verizon owners, I guess. Decent solution to the problem all the same.

Maybe the Verizon iPhone won't need the bumper to solve "the grip" problem. People will just buy it for protection or to add color.

I never understood the need. Death grip or not, my iPhone 4 doesn't drop calls, doesn't lose signal when in an area with decent coverage, etc. I don't know anyone here that has such issues.

I'm on the Rogers network in Canada.

A buddy of mine asked about where to get a good bumper for his iPhone 4. I thought he was crazy. Then I realized he bought into all the anti-iPhone 4 baloney that was spread some months ago. Nice to see that reality (the reality of sales, that is) has cut through all the crap. He did what I did: bought a very nice Sena leather "Ultraslim" pouch and he's good to go.

All in all, I just feel sorry for users that have to live with US carriers.

That, and the type of signal being sent. The Verizon CMDA signal penetrates buildings far better then the AT&T G3.

Yeah, right. It's shocking to hear there's going to be bumpers that fit the Verizon iPhone.

<gasp>

Easy on the sarcasm, I was just pointing out the fact that some people care about this for a good reason. Obviously, we all knew that Apple would provide modified bumpers for the phone, but this is one of the first previews that we've had of a Verizon iPhone compatible accessory.
