At today's Worldwide Developer Conference Keynote address, Apple previewed iPhone Firmware 2.0 and highlighted some additional features of the developer SDK.

New Features
In addition to features that were previewed at the iPhone Software Roadmap event, Apple announced new features of Firmware 2.0 and the SDK, including:

- contact searching
- complete iWork document support
- complete Office document support (now includes PowerPoint)
- bulk delete and move for Mail
- save images you receive
- scientific calculator in landscape mode
- parental controls
- language

In addition, Apple announced a method for developers to have their applications receive information while not in use. Apple had previously said that they would not allow background applications to run on the iPhone, to the widespread dismay of developers who need such functionality to server-side information. As a response, Apple has implemented a notification feature into the SDK which will allow applications to be alerted of server-side events (i.e. new IM received, new mail, etc) without having to run in the background and eat CPU cycles. This functionality is scheduled to be delivered in September, however it will be seeded to developers "soon."

Availability
iPhone Firmware 2.0 will be available for free to existing iPhone customers in "early July". The firmware will also be available for iPod Touch users for $9.95.

Super stoked on the new phone, just wish I could run out and snag it up today! Oh well, my current iphone has another month of use.... Might need to think about selling it!

$10 iPod touch upgrade fee is very reasonable, IMHO. I think Steve made a good move there, considering they'll make money on every app they sell through the updated software...

Also, good job with MacRumorsLive Arn. Flawless other than the pictures, but obviously Amazon going down was a problem you couldn't have foreseen.

It looks great, I'm definitely getting one. Understand I love this product before I say the following:

Apple had ALL this time to figure out how to implement copy/cut/paste on this thing, and they still haven't done it in this recent revision?! And why add the ability to search contacts but not search through emails?

Epic fail.

What about this?

Here's the big news...Wait another month...

Really bummed about the big news being 'wait'.

Anywho...I had a good feeling that we weren't getting anything today. As a iPhone game developer, I was getting ready to be super pissed about not being able to have my game available for the App Store launch...as would other developers I imagine. Here's to looking forward to July 11...

No Video Conference

I was really digging the video conference option that was rumored around. Just 3G, besides that its basically all Software updates. I don't think I'll be letting my current First Gen Iphone go yet.

where's the Ipod touch price drop! :eek:Ipod touch 8gb $299 Iphone 3G 8gb $199. What is that all about! Guess its time to put down the tmobile shadow and pick up the :apple:Iphone :D

Do the iPhone or iPod touch have video out? Since now they have:

- complete iWork document support
- complete Office document support (now includes PowerPoint)

does it mean that the iPhone or iPod touch can be used like a PowerBook for videopresentations using a videoprojector?

AND BOTH OF THEM HAVE WIFI!!! SO, IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE!!!???

Thanks.

big yawn

A whole year later and all we get is 3G and GPS. I'm unimpressed Apple. what are you doing all year!

And that's it?
At least, we saw the new form factor...
What about copy/paste [edit] sorry, didn't saw the previous comment [/edit]?
I guess it's not the "New Newton" yet... ;)

So glad I didn't jump to sell my 2G iPhone to "beat the rush."

Now all those suckas who sold their iPhone must endure a month with a basic (non) i-Phone!

Although it would have been nice to sell for $400 and pocket the difference in July.

BTW, this whole waiting thing is seriously annoying. Good thing I didn't call in sick today - for NOTHING! Sucks to be you if you did. :p

Also, does full support mean it will be able to edit iWork and Office docs?

Did you notice the live coverage stopped at 12 before it returned to this site?

I think you'll find it's lunch at the moment.

Why couldn't they tell us these dates earlier!?!?

I worked my nuts off getting my game finished by today...so it would be ready for the crApp Store, and now, I find out that I could have taken another month. That's really upsetting...back to bed.
